A joint committee of Sporting News and SportsBusiness Journal/SportsBusiness Daily editors and writers present its list of the best announcers calling football games today.
Sporting News fans love to argue over their favorite football announcers. Reporters and editors from Sporting News and SportsBusiness Journal/SportsBusiness Daily do too, and have come together to produce their list of the Top 25 Football Broadcasters.
CBS college football analyst Gary Danielson leads the list, followed by Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels of NBC's "Sunday Night Football."
All active television play-by-play broadcasters and analysts in pro and college football were considered for the list.
The top 25:
1. Gary Danielson, CBS
What we like: He explains it before most of us have seen it.
2. Cris Collinsworth, NBC
What we like: He has a wry sense of humor, plus the insight of a three-time Pro Bowl receiver.
3. Al Michaels, NBC
What we like: He has an ability to paint a picture with words and put a game in context -- not to mention that voice.
4. Phil Simms, CBS
What we like: Thirty years after the former quarterback was the Giants' first draft choice, he still watches the NFL with wonder.
5. Kirk Herbstreit, ABC/ESPN
What we like: A former Ohio State quarterback, his polished analysis is educated and ultra- opinionated but delivered without haughtiness.
6. Troy Aikman, FOX
What we like: The SN contributor offers insight only a Hall of Fame quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion can provide.
7. Ron Franklin, ABC/ESPN
What we like: He has a great voice and a calm, comfortable style.
8. Verne Lundquist, CBS
What we like: He has a great voice and great passion.
9. Joe Buck, FOX

The Sporting Blog: The "also receiving votes" edition
11. Mike Tirico, ESPN
What we like: He always teaches us something.
12. Brad Nessler, ESPN
What we like: He has the ability to play off an assortment of analysts.
13. Brent Musburger, ABC/ESPN
What we like: He has the most distinctive pipes in the game, pardner, and it gets no better than his "You are looking live ... " intro.
14. Jon Gruden, ESPN
What we like: He's intense, just as he was on the sideline as a Super Bowl-winning coach.
15. Daryl Johnston, FOX
What we like: The two-time Pro Bowl fullback has a quick mind and a good handle for the flow of the broadcast.
