Wanted: Head Football Coach for major program in the Southeast. Must have proven experience, have the drive, and passion, to work long hours, and must be able to guarantee 10 wins per season. Must, also, be able to deal with troublesome players and an outspoken fanbase.
In today's world of college football, there is no job more demanding than that of being Head Coach at a major program. At the first signs of trouble, no matter how slight that trouble might be, the fingers are always pointed at the Head Coach. This season, it seems that there is a load of trouble brewing, in Athens GA, and a million fingers being pointed at long-time, beloved Head Coach, Mark Richt. Once considered to be a Saint, in Athens, many fans are, now, calling for his head to roll. How did this happen? Why are so many fans turning their backs on a proven winner, in Mark Richt?
Most avid CFB fans are aware of what Mark Richt has done at UGA. He has won a couple of SEC Championships, was voted SEC Coach of the Year, twice, and has averaged 10 wins per season in his nine year tenure. It seems that most programs would be happy with that, but in today's "must win or go home" world, the UGA fanbase is starting to lose faith in Richt. His SEC Championships are old news, and they want another, NOW. So, can Richt turn things around with his program? Will UGA give him time to do it? Nobody knows, but I would like to offer up a couple of thoughts that one might consider to be at the root of UGA's, and Richt's, problems.
In his first few seasons, Mark Richt had a "hands on" approach, when it came to coaching his team. He was more involved with the actual coaching of his players, and handled the offensive play-calling, himself. With this approach, he won championships, and won the hearts of Dawg fans, everywhere. However, it is very demanding of one man to be so involved in all facets of his team, and Richt began delegating more duties to his assistants, and coordinators. This, it seems, led to the current decline in UGA's program. New offensive, and defensive, coordinators have not been able to right the ship. Will Richt, once again, have to take over some of their duties, in order to win, again? Does he still have the drive, and passion, to do so? Is it worth the effort to work so hard, but still be the scapegoat when his prized players get in trouble?
In the last seven months, there have been 11 UGA players arrested on both, misdemeanor and felony charges. Everyone wants to put the blame on Mark Richt. Mind you, this is not just a Dawg problem. Schools, all across the country, are having the same problem, and people want to point the finger at the Head Coaches. Some say that the coach should be teaching them better, but I ask, "Is that, really, their job? Shouldn't their parents have taught them how to act, properly, by now?" Some say that the coaches should recruit kids that are better behaved, but I ask, "Do you want golfers, or do you want football players?" Coaches HAVE TO recruit the best athletes they can get, in order to win, and if they choose not to recruit a player because his behavior is, somewhat, questionable, then his opponents will get that kid and use him to win. A coach can mentor these kids on proper behavior, but they can't babysit them, all the time. Yet, when one does get in trouble, the blame is on the coach. Could it be that Mark Richt is just sick and tired of having that finger pointed at him?
To sum it up, I do wonder if Richt can turn this program around. I am not trying to criticize him by that statement. Mark Richt has proven to be a winner, and a man of faith, honor, and integrity. I just wonder if he has the drive, and passion, to do what it takes to right the ship, or if the pressures of coaching at UGA have eroded that drive and passion. The man has been carrying UGA Nation on his shoulders, for nine years, and despite what he has done for them, they point those fingers at him with venom. Some fans are crying for this to be his last year, and some want to give him one more, but it wouldn't surprise me, one bit, if Richt were to decide to retire, on his own terms, after this season. And with the incredible burdens that are placed upon him, and coaches all across the nation, I can't say that I blame him.

Well they did get AJ Green back which will help the offense. I say give him another year. He does have a freshman QB and I am a little curious to see how well he can develop him.

Tranny, I wasn't trying to dissect everything, and write a fucking book. Just a short write-up on the topic.

Speaking of trouble in Athens, someone is injured and out for the time being. Hasn't been released. Possibly Orson Charles, as he is wearing a green non-contact jersey, but obviously, no confirmation as of yet. Hmmm....

I do know that the pad hitting on Monday might have been more costly than earlier thought/said.

Nevertheless, the article is not about UGA's crime problem, per se. It is about the pressures of coaching, and CMR. Is it not possible that I might be on to something, with my thoughts?

I'm sure Aron White or Bruce Figgins or Arthur Lynch can step up and take the one or two passes we tried to feed Orson Charles a game. The TE's are underused this season IMO. I've probably mentioned that before somewhere...

It's possible, you've parroted pretty much everything I've read in various blogs and articles the last week pretty well.
Happy?

Actually with AJ in the lineup and Shawn Chappas back to block, the TE option becomes more viable.
Some pretty big changes coming up for the OL.
Sturdivant permanent now. Davis replaced by freshman. From Get the Picture:
… Looks like a few shake-ups are in store for UGA’s offensive line this week, going by who was working today with the first-string. The big mover appears to be true freshman Kenarious Gates at right guard, knocking right tackle Josh Davis out of the starting five. Gates lined up with: Trinton Sturdivant (LT), Cordy Glenn (LG), Ben Jones (C) and Clint Boling, who was at right tackle. The second-string line was: A.J. Harmon (LT), Dallas Lee (LG), Chris Davis (C), Tanner Strickland (RG) and Davis at right tackle.

Even if the OL struggles at least they are replacing struggling players who have shown they can't get the job done.

NCD,
Seth Emmerson reporting that Orson Charles was fully participating this afternoon and did not have a green jersey on.

Well, BD, I would tend to trust the editor of UGASports and the info they submit as being accurate at the time of statement. I also see where they say Charles shed the green jersey and was back out at practice and that Marlon Brown appears to be the injured player that will not be participating this weekend due to a shoulder injury.

And to clarify, it was me who misreported the information. It was Charles who was wearing a green jersey YESTERDAY, not today. And Kris Durham who shed the green jersey for a moment is back to green and not participating in practice due to a setback.

For trying to give the board an interesting read, without just copying and pasting someone else's work? No despair, my Dawg friends. This piece is, now, a feature piece on the front page of The Best Damn Poll. ;D
