Georgia LB Davin Bellamy charged with DUI By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer July 26, 2014 9:33 am ET
Another Georgia defender is facing a suspension following a reported offseason arrest.
Bulldog redshirt freshman linebacker Davin Bellamy was arrested at approximately 5 a.m. Saturday morning and charged with DUI and speeding, Dawgs247.com reported. According to Athens-Clark County police records, he was released at 6:22 a.m. after having posted a $2,000 bond. The charges are misdemeanors.
Bellamy faces a minimum mandatory two-game suspension, per Georgia athletics policy.
A four-star strongside defensive end in the class of 2013, Bellamy was not projected into the Bulldogs' starting lineup but was expected to contribute at outside linebacker.
He is the second Bulldog defender arrested this week, following defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor's felony assault charge last Tuesday. Taylor has been dismissed from the team.

Also, with the UGA discipline policy, this could be a loss of talent...at least for one game.

Yep but I was keeping with the theme of a defensive player. I saw where he made a comment recently about trying to play in the NFL again.

Yeah, physically he's in great shape. I remember watching a show called "Joe Vs Pro" a few years ago with him on it and the guy who was trying to tackle him just grabbed the face mask to drag him down.

All kidding aside, at some point someone within the AD or Univ has to address this issue. This is no longer an anomaly, this is a serious trend.

Seriously though, I am losing my passion for this game. Yeah, it is bad at Georgia. No clue what the solution is. But it isn't just Georgia...every freakin day you see someone has been arrested somewhere. How many times has it been beating up a woman or driving under the influence of something or stealing from others? It is getting old. I don't know if it is today's society or what, but its in the NFL, the NBA, MLB, hockey, soccer and on and on and on. Hard to really give a damn anymore.

I think that it is just reported/broadcasted more. I don't know that we have become that much more violent as a society. Values are changing, but I don't know about the violence.

It is clearly reported more. Maybe that is it. And in the old days, players in smaller university towns would get by with the chief calling the coach. That doesn't happen nearly as much. But it is getting old and I am tired of hearing about it from any of the schools.

He mentioned that if Facebook and Twitter were around in the 90s, it would have been 10 times worse. Even the early 2000s.

It is a reflection of society. There are other factors as well. Access to information is greater than at any other time in history. Another one that people really dont want to talk about is a growing number of people who are in College, playing sports, who really have no business being in college.

As a battalion commander for 2 years I never had this level of indiscipline and we are talking about guys the same age in most cases and in a country (Germany) that never checked IDs for drinking age. And of course, about 800 soldiers as opposed to 85 football players. Hell, I had far more trouble from Dependent kids than I had from 17-18 year old infantrymen. Had a couple of DUIs and a few bar fights, but nothing like this. And I don't recall ever having an assault on a female. I agree that a significant number of these guys wouldn't have been in college 30 years ago. In violent crime, Georgia tends to be no worse or even better than many teams. But in alcohol or substance abuse, we are on a different level. Maybe it is Athens and the bar scene in the town. Obviously these guys can't handle it. Maybe we need to make every bar/club/restaurant in town off limits to all the players. Not sure what else/what other strategy Richt can try. He has been forgiving and he has been unforgiving. No school has as strict of suspension policies. No team has dismissed more players. I know that if we are going to keep this up, we need to relook who we play early. I suggest that the SEC and UGA take Rick Neuheisel's advice and the OBC's digs to heart. Schedule the cupcakes early instead of in November. Might as well have Troy and Charleston Southern in September to cushion the blow of suspensions.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A series of arrests. Players kicked off the team. It's been a tumultuous offseason for the Georgia Bulldogs, raising questions about the way coach Mark Richt runs the program. Richt insists there are no major issues, just a few bad apples. His players, on the other hand, thought the situation was serious enough to meet before the start of preseason practice on Friday. "We just felt like we needed to get together and hash some things out," linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. "That's the first time we've done that in the three years I've been here." There was plenty to discuss. Starting safety Josh Harvey-Clemons was kicked off the team after being suspended twice last season. Four players were arrested on charges of illegal check-cashing, including another starting safety, Tray Matthews, and defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor. Matthews was eventually dismissed from the team and transferred to Auburn. Taylor was soon gone, too, after his second arrest of the offseason, this one for the alleged beating of his girlfriend. Last weekend, just three days after Taylor was sent packing, freshman linebacker Davin Bellamy was arrested in Athens on charges of driving under the influence. "We needed to get everybody together, get the leaders together, and just get it fixed," Jenkins said. Senior receiver Michael Bennett said it's imperative for everyone to take a stake in the team, to look at themselves in the mirror when one of their teammates gets into trouble. "It does bother me," Bennett said. "It kind of makes me feel like I let them down in a way. We all did a little bit." But Richt said it's not fair to blame the entire program for the actions of a few. "The guys that misbehaved have been the problem, and that's why we discipline them," he said. "Some are still here and some aren't. It's part of the consequences of not doing what you're supposed to do, when you're supposed to do it. But the majority of our guys are doing a great job." While critics of Richt have long said he is too lenient, the coach said it's important to distinguish between youthful indiscretions and truly bad behavior. He makes no apologies for the way he doles out punishment, which range from giving some guys the boot to announcing Friday that Bellamy will be suspended for the first two games. Two of the players involved in the check-cashing scam received internal discipline but were not suspended.
"Even a good man makes a mistake sometimes," Richt said. "We'll take care of those things. We always have and always will, and not hide from that." Richt was asked if he plans to be more diligent during the recruiting process about trying to weed out players who might shows signs of getting into trouble once they arrive on campus. He said that already happens. "The reality is, if you look at the guys we sign, they've usually got offers from five to 20 other schools we compete with," Richt said. "That doesn't mean we're all recruiting bad guys. We're all doing our homework. There are people we cull during the recruiting process that you don't read about. We can't say publicly that we dropped this guy, but there are guys we drop from the recruiting process. There are things we find out on a visit, of maybe some of the current players say, 'He's not going to make it around here.'" Just last year, Richt said, the Bulldogs nixed a high school prospect because of offensive comments he had posted on social media and, then, his attempts to keep up the rant by setting up another account under a fake name. "He was thinking we wouldn't find out, but we found out," Richt said. "So we culled him. We rescinded our offer to him. If he wasn't going to do what we wanted him to do at that point, what makes you think he's going to do it when he gets here? There's definitely a vetting process that we're very serious about."

There have no doubt been issues. If I had all the answers I would be on their payroll. What I do know is that this idiotic idea that it is who Georgia is recruiting is dumber than dirt. They are recruiting exactly the same guys everyone else is recruiting. Teammates do bear some responsibility for this crap.
