The Los Angeles Police Department announced Friday that it is investigating whether suspended USC cornerback Josh Shaw was involved in a possible domestic violence incident last Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“We would have like to hear from Mr. Shaw to provide some clarity about the situation, but that is not going to happen,” Capt. John McMahon told the Times, citing Shaw's decision not to interview with police, on the advice of his attorney
"In light of that," McMahon said, "our investigation into a possible domestic dispute will continue."
McMahon indicated that Shaw's girlfriend had spoken to police, but told them she had not been a victim of any domestic violence.
The LAPD also released further details of its Saturday night call to the Orsini building apartments, where Shaw's girlfriend told police that the description a man seen on the third-floor balconies matched a description of Shaw.
LAPD's Sara Faden said that police had responded to a call of a woman screaming on the third floor, and opened the door to the apartment in question when no one answered the door. The apartment was empty, Faden said, though a window appeared to have been pried open. The woman living in the apartment then arrived and told officers nothing had been stolen, and that witnesses' description of the man spotted outside sounded like her boyfriend, Shaw, who also rents an apartment in the building.
LAPD would tell USA Today earlier this week it happened to be a "mutually matching description" and that Shaw was not a burglary suspect.
A senior and team captain, Shaw was suspended indefinitely Wednesday after admitting he fabricated a story in which he jumped from a second-floor balcony to save a nephew drowning in a pool at a gathering in his hometown of Palmdale, Calif. Saturday. USC announced Shaw's supposed feat of heroism Monday, saying Shaw had suffered sprains to both ankles in the leap.
USC would later investigate the story after receiving calls questioning its veracity, and Shaw claimed Wednesday he had injured his ankles in a simple fall off a balcony. Shaw's attorney told the media the fall had been unrelated to alcohol and there was no "criminal aspect whatsoever" to the injury.
USC opens its season Saturday vs. Fresno State at 7:30 p.m. ET.
