GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- When Florida coach Will Muschamp was fired, he was sure to paint the picture that he was leaving behind a talented roster for the next coach to work with.
"They've got a deep and talented roster, so don't let that new guy tell you he ain't got any players," he said. "I can tell you that right now. There are some good football players in that locker room."
Some being the operative word.
Florida's current roster paints a far different picture than the one Muschamp was selling. Sure, the Gators are loaded on defense, particularly in the secondary. But this spring, the Gators have just eight scholarship offensive linemen.
New coach Jim McElwain was blunt when asked about the issues that's created for the Gators this spring.
"You've got to play the hand you're dealt," McElwain said. "And right now, quite honestly, the hand we were dealt is really insufficient at some of the areas."
The lack of offensive linemen -- Florida currently has three walk-ons on the second-team unit, including the center -- has made even practicing difficult.
"To try to even create kind of two groups is hard, so these guys, we're giving them spells," McElwain said. "Just kind of the way we practice, we had to kind of totally change how we will normally practice here in the future."
McElwain isn't using the poor roster depth as an excuse, but he won't pretend like it doesn't exist.
"It's hard. Like I said, it hurts the whole team," he said. "Just like the short numbers are on linebackers as well. We're awful short there as well, and yet it's something we know. There's nothing we can do about it."
His team is doing what it can to cope this spring. The first-year coach refuses to let the depth problems take anything away from what the Gators are able to do.
"That's no excuse," he said. "It's what we have, and those guys are battling their tails off and learning and giving us an opportunity to execute some offense.

I think it's a win/win for new coaches when they take over a program like UF. On one hand they can claim the previous coach left the cupboard bare and they have their work cut out for them. On the other hand if they start winning the next year and exceed expectations then they are a good coach who did better than the previous coach did with his players.
Should be an interesting year in Gainesville and I look forward to the WLOCP.

Show me where someone has made such a bet on this board, other than CFF's futile attempt, and we'll do it. Otherwise, pull up your skirt, put on your big girl panties, and make the av bet for a month.

McElwain is being honest about the status of the roster. When you only have seven offensive linemen able to go, you've got serious depth issues. And the linebacker depth is awful, too. He wouldn't have the job if Muschamp had brought better players in.
Muschamp was right as well. The roster he inherited was devoid of the kind of talent that Florida expects. But his recruiting was inconsistent - Rivals' ratings don't speak to roster needs, they speak to star quantity.
I don't get the problem with either coach pointing about what's what with the roster.

So what you're saying is if proof is provided it has been done before you'll take his bet? Cause I can provide the proof and even have one of the participants post verification if that's the only thing holding this up.

AUBURN -- Will Muschamp isn't so sure what Jim McElwain is complaining about.
In November, Muschamp said Florida had a "deep and talented roster, so don't let that new guy tell you he ain't got any players," but last week McElwain said the Gators roster "really insufficient" in some areas, specifically on offensive line and linebacker.
Muschamp said he was unaware of McElwain's comments, but Auburn's defensive coordinator offered a strong rebuttal.
"He said he could coach a dog and win," Muschamp said. "Heck, (does he) like the dog better than his players?"
Muschamp was referring to remarks McElwain made during his introductory press conference.
"I believe I can win with my dog Claribelle," McElwain said. "That's the attitude. There's good players here. That's just our responsibility to get that going."
Florida is practicing with just eight scholarship offensive linemen this spring and has three walk-ons on the two-deep, according to GatorBait.net.
While Muschamp acknowledged the departures from UF's offensive line that obviously led to some shortage for the Gators this spring, he still feels there's "a lot of good football players" at Florida.
"At the end of the day, at the time D.J. Humphries and Tyler Moore had not declared for the NFL Draft and that's two guys that started a lot of ball games and Rod(erick)Johnson was a returning starter," Muschamp said. "Certainly at the position, at the offensive line, the numbers are obviously down.
"I didn't know of any comments. Other than that, there's a lot of good football players sitting down there."

Muschamp is an idiot in terms of roster management and being a head coach.
Idiot.
