Per an ESPN report from Brett McMurphy, quarterback Everett Golson informed Brian Kelly Thursday afternoon he intends to transfer from Notre Dame. (Photo: Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports)
Golson shared a full statement with Fox Sports own Bruce Feldman here: shared a full statement with FoxSports.com's Bruce Feldman.
"After much thought, prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to graduate from Notre Dame and transfer to another school effectively immediately," Golson said in the statement released to FoxSports.com. "I would like to thank everyone at Notre Dame for the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football, but most importantly to obtain my degree from one of the finest universities in the country.
"To all the Fighting Irish fans, I want to thank you for your support over the past four years and let you know I truly love Notre Dame. To my former teammates, who I will miss tremendously, I wish much success in the future and will be your biggest fan from afar."
Kelly released a statement shortly after the ESPN report:
"I'd like to thank Everett Golson for all he did as a member of our football program," Kelly said in the statement. "He had many significant achievements, including helping us to an undefeated regular season and berth into the national title game. But his most important accomplishment is completing his course work toward a degree from the University of Notre Dame. I wish him all the best moving forward.
"We, of course, have approached our preparations for the upcoming season with this possibility in mind. The emergence of Malik Zaire, based on his performance in the Music City Bowl over the LSU, and throughout spring practice, has given our staff supreme confidence that he can lead our team to great success in 2015."
Golson has not decided on a destination yet. In January, McMurphy reported 24 schools would be interested in the Irish quarterback if he decided to transfer.
However, things could get complicated if Golson were to try and transfer to an SEC school because of his year-long suspension.
The senior from Myrtle Beach, S.C., started 11 games as a redshirt freshman and threw 12 touchdowns and six interceptions as the Irish had their first undefeated season since 1988. Golson didn't play in 2013 after he was suspended in May because of an academic matter. He returned in 2014 and threw for 3,445 yards and 29 touchdowns. He rushed for eight more scores but turned the ball over 22 times and lost his starting job in the Music City Bowl, when Kelly opted to play Malik Zaire instead.
Golson was locked in a quarterback competition with Zaire through spring football and neither quarterback showed enough separation to be named the starter, Kelly said. The sixth-year Irish head coach added that Golson had his best spring practice with Notre Dame and he expected the senior to be on the team in August.
Golson's decision to transfer effectively means Zaire will start under center in Notre Dame's season-opener against Texas. Redshirt freshmen DeShone Kizer, Montomgery VanGorder and incoming freshman Brandon Wimbush join Zaire on the quarterback depth chart.

I was hoping he'd stay, but understand why he's not. IF he can cut down the turnovers, he'd be a hell of a QB for someone. I hope he does well.

Bylaw 14.1.15.1 requires that the "student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution (excluding limited discipline by a sports team)."
Then how does every multiple arrested player end up in the SEC W?

Golson set to visit UGA and SC 247sports.com/Bolt/Golson-set-to-visit-37178421According to 247Sports analyst Clint Brewster, who spoke with a source that has direct knowledge of the transfer of former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, the Myrtle Beach, S.C., native is planning to visit South Carolina and Georgia next week. Golson is expected to be in Columbia on Monday and Athens on Tuesday. Golson announced he was leaving the Fighting Irish program on Thursday. The Gamecocks and Bulldogs are believed to be his two top choices per reliable sources. There could be a caveat to Golson ending up in the Southeastern Conference due to a year-long suspension at Notre Dame. Because Golson was suspended during the 2013 season, for what he called “poor academic judgement,” whichever school in the SEC he chooses would have to submit a waiver to the league office. SEC bylaw 14.1.15.1, part d, clarifies the conference’s rules for graduate student exceptions: They may receive financial aid, practice and compete … so long as “the student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution.”

If Georgia is interested, I am concerned. As others have said, he can be very good. But he can also be awful. More than that, two of Georgia's rostered quarterbacks were very highly rated. Remember, Nick Saban spent 90 minutes skyping with Ramsey after the kid had told him he was going to remain a Georgia commit. Either we missed the call on both he and Park or there seems to be unnecessary panic among coaches and fans.
I think dpb raises a very good question. With that transfer rule, how do SEC teams pick up some problem childs from other schools? Or is that strictly for graduate students who don't sit out a year. As I recall, Ole Miss got a kid from Oregon that had quite a past and that is what caused this rule to be put in place. If someone knows, I would appreciate hearing what the rules are.

BTW, the conference transfer rule applies to students with less than 2 years of eligibility left. Thus most of the SEC East rejects would be technically eligible in the wild, wild West.

I am hearing FSU is basically a done deal I hope not. He doesn't seem to be a good fit for Jimbo's offense.

I'd assume he is looking to stay on schollie, not be a walk on. Silly Vol fan. He is graduating from ND with a year of eligibility left, thus being allowed to transfer and play immediately. Why does he still need a schollie?

Why does he still need a schollie? Silly Gator fan...if you attend college to play football, without a schollie it still costs money.

If he is taking courses toward a Masters Degree, it costs money. I would assume he is not playing as a walk on. Unless he is independently wealthy, I would assume he would be on scholarship.
Agree with Tranny. I don't think he is a fit in a pro system. I also don't think Richt wants to send a signal to QBs on the roster that an outsider can come in and take over, especially given the successful QBs he has coached. Also not sure that sends a good message to that young man from Washington State.

Do any Vol fans understand what "graduating", means? I understand what it means. Do you understand that a student athlete has to be enrolled in classes at the college or they aren't a "student" athlete? If you enroll in a class, whether seeking another degree or not, it still costs money. A scholarship covers part or all of that cost.

Seriously? Gators. What else is there one can say? Are you sure that a player that has graduated can not complete his eligibility without enrolling in class? I thought there was an exception for such.
