I hope that translates the way intended. Doesn't quite read right! Either way...

This is what happens when money runs the game and not the spirit of competition.

Heather Dinich, ESPN Senior Writer Mar 8, 2024, 12:09 PM ET
College Football Playoff leaders are inching closer to a 14-team playoff for the 2026 season, but sources have indicated that the proposed idea of the SEC and Big Ten champions receiving guaranteed byes is starting to lose some steam among conference commissioners following public backlash.
It's likely the details of the 14-team format aren't determined in advance of the TV contract, which sources said remains on target to be done in the coming weeks. CFP leaders want to ensure they are aligned on revenue distribution and CFP governance before signing the TV deal, and they have had multiple meetings and calls recently to make progress in both areas.
While there continues to be support for a 14-team field starting in 2026, discussions about how teams should qualify for the CFP remain a sticking point. Commissioners are still debating whether conferences should have automatic qualifiers and, if so, how many for each. ESPN recently reported that the Big Ten and SEC had asked that their respective conference champions receive the only two byes in a 14-team field -- an unpopular proposal that was met with significant pushback.
"Automatic first-round byes for the Big Ten and SEC is like the NFL saying the Cowboys get a first-round bye since they have more fans than the Bengals," TCU coach Sonny Dykes told ESPN last week. "How preposterous is that?"
Sources cautioned that as long as the format is up for debate, all options will be considered but that "some things will be punted" until after the TV deal is done. It's possible that CFP leaders will wait to see how the 12-team format unfolds this season, but sources have indicated they would like a resolution sooner than later.
The CFP will use a 12-team format for the first time in the 2024 season. The five highest-ranked conference champions will earn a guaranteed spot, followed by the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive a first-round bye. The 12-team playoff will continue for the 2025 season.
Revenue will continue to tilt toward the Big Ten and SEC in the next TV contract, but negotiations are ongoing as they relate to other allocations. The ACC is expected to receive slightly more than the Big 12 because of its past playoff participants, but that minor difference is a win for the Big 12 because of the disparity in past playoff participants. The ACC has had six CFP semifinalists, while TCU is the only current Big 12 team to reach a CFP semifinal as a member of the league. Big 12 member Cincinnati earned a CFP berth in the 2020 season when it was a member of the American Athletic Conference.

4 teams, 8 teams, 12 teams. The playoff era sucks. It's ruined college football. It is what lead us to NIL and to the portal and it all is starting to not be nearly as much fun to watch as it used to be. Call me an old timer if you will but the pre-BCS era of college football was a hundred times better than this mess we have now. When conference championships and conference rivals meant something. When going to a bowl game meant something. And when "arguing" about the fictitious national champion was an actual fun activity because there was no playoff and no real reason for one.

I am too an old timer. I liked the good ole days myself. I don't know if the playoffs led to the NIL and portal. But those two things has changed the college game of football that I loved. I don't have near the passion that I use to have for the game.

What did the conference championships mean? How so? They meant nothing then other than a bowel tie in. We had 7 way ties for championships...maybe a little exaggeration, but there were several 3-way ties.

Hell, they were so unimportant, that you didn't even need to quality for the Conf ship to play in AND win a natty.

And teams and their fan bases were thrilled to go Pasadena or Dallas or New Orleans or Miami and even Jacksonville or Atlanta. And a win meant a successful season. And we had arguments once in a while about Natties, especially when it was a split one. And it was a unique American sport...hardly perfect but absolutely the best regular season in American sport. Now we have a shit storm, brought on in no small part by this obsession with being just like the guys on Sunday. Kaara hit the nail on the head.

Nope, mass confusion and favoritism by the color of the shirt or who has the best story. Could not be more wrong. I was alive then too, and I have my opinion, you have yours. Apparently they felt they needed to change because football wasn't getting ratings from the archaic system for determining a champion. The system was garbage. They shined a turd and made the BCS. They added a layer of polish and now we have a playoff without a clear cut way to make it because people want to hold onto the polls and popularity contests. College football is great, the system is garbage.

Actually it was great because it wasn't a copy cat like every other sport. And it was the only regular season that mattered. Soon even that is out the window.

There was a reason nobody else was doing it that way. As far as regular season mattering, you are a Bulldog fan. Do you think the basketball team thinks the regular season doesn't matter? This is not meant as an insult to Georgia basketball, or a jab at Georgia. As stated in another thread, I think they aren't that far off from being a top tier team. They were competitive in most every game, just couldn't find a way to win.

Georgia sucks now and has always sucked in basketball. Imagine, had they somehow won that tournament like they did a few years ago they would be in March Madness. That speaks volumes about it.

Imagine, had they somehow won that tournament like they did a few years ago they would be in March Madness. That speaks volumes about it. Wrong! Basketball arenas across the country have a higher fill rate with more games than does college football. Near the same amount of teams make bowel games than make the playoff. One major difference is that the CBB playoff includes all of division one, not just division 1A. Add to it the number of FCS teams that make the playoff and your point is totally dis-proven. Teams like Gonzaga wouldn't stand a chance in football, but they have the third longest streak of appearances. Also, they have made the Sweet 16 in eight straight years. Just an example of what I stated about opportunity in CFB.
