He is 3-1-1 in the singles matches. Nicklaus was 4-4-2. The fourball and foursome crap is largely dependent on who one is paired with. I only see him as 2-1-1 in Singles. (He's only been a pro since late 96 when he played in 7 events. I think he's only be eligible for 5 cups thus far in his career with 08 being his 6th) To say the other competions is crap is a cop out. He paired with the best players in the world. If, as you illistrate, he THAT much better, it shouldn't matter who he's paired with....he should win. Hell, in some matches he was paired with the no 2 player in the world, Phil. I took it off the Ryder Cup web site. It lists his overall record as 10-13-2 with 3-1-1 in the singles. I'll concede that the statement that he "IS" golf was an overstatement...maybe. But right now...he has no peer.

Do you consider yourself a golf fan, GT? Because I am. Not a diehard fan, but I follow the sport, and watch the tournys when I can. I used to go to the Memorial tourny every year until I moved away from Columbus. I think most golf "fans" would agree with me and you. And most sports fans who are peripheral golf fans, would agree with whamil. It's pretty annoying when the announcers will make excuses for Tiger not winning a tourny, instead of giving credit to the winner. That...I agree with. If someone wins a tournament with Tiger in the field, it should result in additional accolades for the winner.

Geaux, if all pros can make those shots why don't they? And you know as well as I do that Tiger is the only with the ability and confidence to make those shots in any situation. Phil probably has about the same physical ability as Tiger but his mental toughness is not near enough to challenge Tiger. You may not like him or all the attention he receives, but you can't deny he is the greatest golfer of our time and probably the greatest ever. He'll smash Nicklaus's majors record barring a career ending injury and then there will be no debate.

I have also seen Tiger gag some shots as well. Ive seen Davis Love III hit a very similar wedge on 16 at Augusta that Tiger hit to win in 05. Again, Im not debating that he's not the best just that Golf will go on with or without him playing and be just as popular.

By making the statement 'Tiger Woods IS golf' you could say it discredits other golfers. I look at it in this context. He is golf right now because of what he's doing for that sport right now. Much like Michael Jordan was basketball up until he left the Bulls. The second time. Or Magic and Bird were basketball in the 80s.
Big purses? The fact that the average guy cares about golf right now? It may not be all because of Eldrick Woods. But the fact that you could even make the argument would show to me why the statement 'Tiger Woods is golf' isn't too far off.

I'm a crappy golfer, I played lots of bong golf on the PS in college, and I watch a fair bit. The shot Tiger hit last year (or year before) around a tree in the straw was the most amazing thing I've ever seen someone do with a golf club (life and video game). Faldo even owned up and said Tiger was the only person in the world that could hit that shot. For pete's sake, he was aiming at the spectators that looked like they were 20 ft away. There's a reason the cameras are up his rectum. Like all the greats in all sports, Tiger is capable of pulling off a once in a lifetime achievement everytime he steps on a golf course. Choose a name, MJ, Montana, Ali, redstick13, etc, etc, etc. People want to see when that defining moment happens. Tiger's not nearly done with his.

Love or hate - Tiger is the man at this point and time in the Universe.
He may equal or break the records of the "Golden Bear" - he hasn't yet - when he does let us all curse his praises for filling up the links with little kids that want to be like Tiger."
They should all drink a 5th of "Mataxa" and like would be good - or smoke some icky - or be a parent -
Hell - I don't know -

More about Tiger He horrible at the Ryder Cup: 7-11-2 record Has never led a US Team to victory. Actually, the one time the US won with Tiger on the team was when Justin Leonard drop a bomb on Jose Maria Olazabal. Tiger has grossly underachieved at the Ryder Cup...something Jack never did. This Ryder Cup discussion got me wondering. Tiger's record really isn't that good in that competition, especially when compared to his predecessors or compared to his PGA record. So I did some digging. It looks to me like the Euros were just horrible in Palmer's and Nicklaus' time. Here are some comparative records. Notable players during the Palmer/Nicklaus era Andy Bean 4-2-0 Tommy Bolt 3-1-0 Julius Boros 9-3-4 Gay Brewer 5-3-1 Jackie Burke 7-1-0 Billy Casper 20-10-7 Dow Finsterwald 9-3-1 Al Geiberger 5-1-3 Hale Irwin 13-5-2 Tom Kite 15-9-4 Gene Littler 14-5-8 Jack Nicklaus 17-8-3 Arnold Palmer 22-8-2 Sam Snead 10-2-1 Lee Trevino 17-7-6 Lanny Wadkins 20-11-3 As you can see, we used to just beat the shit out of them. But now.... Notable current players and Ryder Cup records Paul Azinger 5-7-3 Mark Calcavecchia 6-7-1 Stewart Cink 3-5-4 Fred Couples 7-9-4 Chris DiMarco 2-4-2 Jim Furyk 6-12-2 Jay Haas 4-6-2 Davis Love III 9-12-5 Jeff Maggert 6-5-0 Phil Mickelson 9-12-4 Mark O'Meara 4-9-1 Tiger Woods 10-13-2 ...everybody, including Tiger, is struggling in the Ryder Cup. IMO, the Euros have gotten much, much better as compared to the 60's and 70's. Other than Maggert, it's hard to find an American player, who has played in more than one competition, with a winning record.
