Florida Teacher Allegedly Lets Kindergarteners Kick Autistic Boy Out of Class in 'Survivor'-Like Vote Hundreds of parents of autistic children are signing an online petition to get Florida teacher Wendy Portillo fired for her alleged tactics toward a 5-year-old boy that mirror the reality show “Survivor.” Morningside Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, Fla., alerted Melissa Barton this year that her son, Alex, suffers from a high-functioning form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome, FOX 29 reported. Barton claims that Alex was punished for symptoms of his disability, such as humming and eating his homework. She says Portillo went too far last week when she kicked Alex out of class, and then allowed the other students to vote on whether he should be allowed back in. Each student was also allowed to say what he or she did not like about Alex. By a 14-to-2 margin, the students voted Alex out of class, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “She said this was her way of correcting his behavior,” Barton said. “I asked him how that made him feel and he said, ‘I feel sad.’” Barton has filed a complaint with Morningside's school resource officer, who investigated the matter, Port St. Lucie Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Steele told the Sun-Sentinel. But the state attorney's office decided the matter did not meet criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed, Steele said. The teacher has been disciplined, however. “Ms. Portillo has been reassigned outside of the classroom at the district offices until any further action may be determined," St. Lucie County School District said in a statement. Alex has not returned to school since the incident, and Barton says he won’t be going back. "He was incredibly upset," Barton told the Sun-Sentinel. "The only friend he has ever made in his life was forced to do this." www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,358956,00.html

At least 2 kids had a brain. That's something in this day and age.
Of course the only not normal kid in my class was me - I wonder how many undiagnossed mental disorders I suffered from then that weren't diagnossed.
Hell - I could have been the 1950's poster child for mental disorders.

This is just .... Cassells. I wonder what WOULD meet the criteria for mental abuse of a child? To have all your peers VOTE you out of a classroom at the age of 5 must be horrible. This is going to effect him for some time.

My mother was telling me about this incident this past weekend. It happened near where she lives. I thought it was very wrong what the teacher did.
But...
I know children that are border line autistic, autistic, or just a handful. I heard that the parents were testing him to see if he was autistic, I wonder if they told anybody. My children are not school aged yet, but I have heard from others that there are some kids in some classrooms that need and require all the attention, leaving the rest of the class to suffer. Even in my child's daycare, there is a boy that has "special needs". The class can go on little excursions only on the days that he is not there.
It is a hard situation to be in. If you put them in a class with kids that have the same type of needs that they do, then you run the risk of them being ostracized. If you put them in a class with other kids that do not have special needs, then you run the risk of most of the time being utilized on the kids with special needs to the detriment of those that don't.

I'm not sure the teacher was thinking and I also don't think she had the training as a teacher to handle the situation and lacked the skills as a human to deal with it.
I also blame the parents of the 14 that voted him off. Until I thought that we are talking about kids in kindergarten. Not their fault at all but I'd really like to get to know the two that voted the other way and ask them why.
I guess upon further reflection - we've been given the black and white version of the story - I'd like the "Paul Harvey" version to get the rest of the story before forming any opinions.

If he has Aspergers he should be very high functioning and only lack appropriate social skills....they are usually very intelligent, in fact I have heard that Bill Gates has Asperger's.
His behavior is due in part to the fact that he has sensitivity issues. He can probably hear the humming of the florescent lights and other sound that we can't it they bug him to death. He is overstimulated by these sounds and needs an escape. What isn't said is how much time he actually spends in the regular classroom. By law, Schools must place the child in the Least restrictive environment....which may be a self contained class or the regular class or a mixture of both, Unless the school is full inclusion. (which is usually only in California) Asperger's children should be able to spend some time in the regular classroom as long as the teacher is sensitive to their needs and sensory issues.

I find this very hard to believe that a teacher could be this insensitive and stupid. Her teaching career is over, and I will take bets on that one. RHV, where is your mom at? My parents bought a house in St. Lucie back in early 90's, I graduated from Martin Co. High. They lived on Cornell Ave. I liked that little neighborhood.

Rhvgator gave a good explanation. I was wondering if the kid needs to be in a special needs class.
Regardless, that was abominable how this kid was treated and the teacher did not act like an adult in this situation at all. Worst of all, a kid with Asperger's could be set back a very long time because of this.
