I will be talking about stories (most of them funny ones from the kids that they tell me) and stories about our baseball season.
They are 10 years-old and are a travel team. They are all from a small town, and go to school together for the most part (lots of different elementaries). Last year they were all on the team (a 9 year-old travel team) and they ended up going 27-9 and coming in 4th place in a regional world series. Pretty damn impressed with them! This year our team will be moving to a tougher division so I think we will be closer to .500 this year.

One of the kids (our catcher) is just crazy funny. He asked me if I was a Democrat or Republican...then said don't worry I can understand why you would be one or the other. I told him I didn't really have a party and asked him what his party was...he told me it was personal. The things that 10 year-olds say...and know these days...

All right a story from last night at practice...
My little brother is on the team, which is the reason that I am the coach (well one of them).
Anyways, I was down in the bullpen working with our pitchers. My brother was pitching. He was throwing a lot of strikes and doing well. Then I stepped in the box (without a bat) to give the kids a different look. My brother threw them at my feet a few times. The next time he threw it there I let it hit me. He was almost in shock (cause I could have moved out of the way) and the catcher was surprised too.
I threw the ball back to him and told him to stop letting guys on base by hitting them. The next 10 pitches he threw were almost perfect.
Not sure I could have done that with anyone else on the team...but I knew he could do it, and he was just not focusing.
Today he sent me an e-mail from school telling me he was sorry for plunking me... kids...

Great stuff BTB. Good luck to your team too. Thanks man. We have a great group of kids who all enjoy spending time with one another (friends off the field as well). The parents are good too (they like to drink...and always buy for me!!!).

That's awesome.... I think I'd be a good coach for older players... I'd be good at fine-tuning their abilities... not patient enough to teach them the game I think... we'll see when I have kids (unless I have daughters).. then, mommy can take them to dance recitals and shit...

Yeah last year was a little rough. The first year of kid pitch is always tough to teach...but I think they did very well (kids pick up things very quickly).
At the end of the year our team went to a tourney (Regional WS) and pitched 43 innings...with 9 walks (including 1 HBP).
Pretty proud of the little guys.

BTB,
I coach kids the same age. Last year was rough a 1-11 record. We were the bad news bears.
We have our draft next week and our first game on April 18th. My son is so excited and so am I...we'll have to share some stories!

Feel free to throw those on here as well. I remember reading about your team in your blog last year.
Good luck on your draft!

Sounds entertaining BTB. If you think watching first year pitching is tough, you should try umping them

Wow...
This weekend we had a steak fry as a fundraiser. The kids were not allowed to attend and some of the parents got sloppy drunk. It was fairly funny because near the end of the night the discussion turned interesting, and several of the mothers were showing me their bras...and if the event wasn't over when it was (like 1AM) I am not sure what else would have gone down.
What is really good is that the kids and the parents enjoy spending time together, so it makes it a lot of fun.
Oh yeah...and we made nearly 3K...

BTB I coach "prep" age, or middle school. Little kids would be fun, and they do say some crazy shit.
The only funny stories I have are bonehead plays. Kids at that age don't say funny shit, they actually will surprise you with what they do say though. Sometimes you just want to backhand the lil' fuckers!!

That sounds like fun Pruitt.
Had to cancel practice the other day...due to snowy conditions...

Wow...it was a great day for a game here (we played at 10:30 in the morning). It was about 45 degrees and a little windy. We played a pretty solid team and pitched our 9,10, and 11 guys and ended up winning 16-8. 6 of those runs were unearned . I was pretty impressed with how they played and think most of our errors were from first game jitters. Got a lot of work to do though... Nothing like baseball in the spring in Columbus, Ohio.

I am sure you will have some great ones! The best stories are the ones that usually happen off the field! Heck as their coach I see them almost as much as their parents do in the summer!

So how was the tourney BTB? It wore me the fuck out... There were two games Friday (we played one and won it easily). I went to the field at like 4PM and got home at like 10:45 (after fixing the field). I had been up since 6 so I went to bed when I got home. Saturday our first game was at 10 and I was there at 8:00 lining, dragging, and fixing the field up. There were then 6 games at the field (we won our two easily). Today our first game was at 11AM and I was at the field before 9 to prepare it for the rain that was sure to come. It held off almost the entire day (we won our game). It was a round robin tournament, and we did well, but honestly the competition wasn't great. 4 more games next weekend...but our tournament had 12 games this weekend...and I was there for every second of every one (fixing the field between). It is hell to run those tournaments (this one was a pre-season type one). Our team made about 1500 bucks for our team fund...

Yeah but I had a great time (well most of the time). Our kids played well, and they spent a lot of time at the park, just hanging out (it is nice they are friends with their teammates). Also our team made about 1500 bucks for our run to a World Series in Indianapolis in the late summer (end of July if memory serves...and it might not now).

Keep up the good work BTB and IrishNY. I wish I didn't travel so much because I would love to coach, but I just don;t have the time right now. I guess I'll live vicariously through your stories. Good luck with your seasons.

Good luck with your seasons. That is too bad toph. From what I have seen ya write about baseball you would be a good coach. We have 4 games this weekend (2 Sat and 2 Sun) and have a couple more practices this week. With 12 kids on the team that all pitch it is toughest to find them all inning (the pitching coach is me...so I do all that stuff). Surprisingly a new rule has been put in place limiting the number of pitches a kid can throw, and requiring certain off days (21-35 pitches requires 2 days of rest in the regular season). Thanks man, hopefully we will go .500 since we moved up 2 divisions. Last year we went 27-9 and got 4th in a regional World Series.

I remember in HS and college I worked with my cousin's Little League team and their pitchers. It was a blast. Good luck this weekend. Sounds like the weather should be great!
