Thanks Toph! Believe it or not we don't have a single lefty on our squad and only one kid who hits left handed.
Who am I supposed to work with on a move to first? Righties? Actually a couple of our righties have nasty quick moves to first, and have picked off a few kids.

We actually play high school rules and have since the kids were 9. The travel leagues play high school rules, but do give a warning for balks.

Thanks guys. State tournament starts tomorrow. In our division (they call it 'Elite') only 12 teams in the state of Ohio signed up. The requirements to be 'Elite' are no limits on the area that you draw from, and the teams are really good. We are going to have a tough time, as we are a small team where all the kids go to the same school district.

Wow...a hell of a weekend!
The rain pushed us back a few times, but the state tournament got finished. We went 3-2 and if we would have won one more game we would have been in the final. We finished 3rd and got some serious hardware. Another reward was getting our picture taken and being put in 'Baseball' magazine.
One thing I am damn proud of is that we didn't use any pitcher that was on too short of rest (according to the regular season league rules). The tournament rules are skewed. One of the kids on the team that beat us threw 27 innings in 3 days (which was the max). We had no one throw over 18 innings and they pitched 40 pitches on Thursday and 40 today.
It bothers me that they change the rules, and I couldn't use our best pitcher because he threw 60 pitches on Friday, and couldn't throw him today (not b/c of the rules, but b/c of conscience). Not more important to me to win a tournament than to keep a kid healthy, hell they are 10 years old...
It was a great weekend, and spent all Fathers Day with my dad on or near the field, then we went and I bought him some ice cream after the game. A hell of a day, and damn proud of the kids who finished 3rd out of the 'Elite Division' in the state of Ohio.

I couldn't believe the pitching rules. All year we use a pitch count to save the kids arms from overuse (with required rest increasing based on number of pitches...the max 65 requires 5 days of rest). The tournaments come around, and it goes by innings instead of pitches. At 10 they can throw a lot of pitches to record an entire inning. Teams that overuse the pitchers to win makes me a little upset. We used 7 pitches in 5 games, and only three pitchers twice (two pitched on Thursday then again on regular rest which is Sunday) and my brother who threw 20 pitches on Friday and 30 on Sunday. Not overuse at all, and we still came in third. Probably a little upset because I was just looking at some of the stats and lots of teams just used 3 pitchers in their games and used them to the max (which averages probably 12 pitches/inning by 9 innings which is too many pitches in a 3 day tournament). Rain pushed it to four and the one coach wanted to expand the number of innings to a four day tournament rule (30 outs instead of 27). Safety goes out the window with hardware present apparently.

BTB you are so right. Is a trophy that pretty much means nothing worth a young kid's arm?

BTB you are so right. Is a trophy that pretty much means nothing worth a young kid's arm? Definitely not. I am glad to hear others feel the same way. As some of the coaches see that trophy, and forget about the safety of the kids. One coach had his 3rd basemen play 45 feet from the plate for every hitter because he heard we liked to bunt a lot for base hits. Even when our big hitters came up the kid stood there, and was lucky that he didn't get seriously hurt. Again...winning more important than safety (just ridiculous).

Wow that's crazy about the 3rd baseman. Lucky he didn't get decapitated.
As far as the pitching goes, are they not Little League sanctioned events? Do they not have to go by those rules.
BTW, congrats on coming in 3rd. Nothing to sneeze at.

BTW, congrats on coming in 3rd. Nothing to sneeze at. Yeah the thing with the third basemen was just scary. I really didn't want to see him get hit in the face with a ball because his coach wants to try to prevent a bunt. The pitching rules in the Nations State of Ohio baseball tournament was by innings pitched instead of pitches (a change from the regular season rules of pitch count). I am not sure why the change was made, but it was, and the 'aces' for the better teams got overused. Hell the kid Coleman for LSU had thrown 9 innings in the CWS, and a kid threw that many from Thursday-Sunday at the age of 10. Just a complete joke. Thanks man. I was proud of them for getting third place, and we got trophies too , which they love of course. With teams who recruit from large areas against a community team (only 12 in the top division) is pretty solid for our 'little team'. One of the coaches of the recruited teams was talking to me the other day, and said the pitching restrictions really punish 'little teams like you guys'. It pissed me off...and then we went out and beat them in 2 games with 5 different pitchers. ;D

Probably thought he could be a little condescending given your age. Way to show him up. ;D

I couldn't believe that those coaches think it is ok to throw a kid 9 innings in 4 days (with games rained out on Friday and moved back on Saturday) is mind boggling to me. They don't limit someone from throwing back to back days to allow for a 'closer' type pitcher to be used, but others obviously take advantage, and they will probably change that ruling, and the wording of the pitching rules next year.
It was good to get back at him. Especially since our field was playable on Friday and would have been used to get the state tournament back on schedule (for our division), but the guy refused to play at our place, so it got pushed back another day. Then he asked me what the inning and the score was. Just a jerk. Glad we beat him (and his kid got plunked too...and I wanted to tell my pitcher to do it, but couldn't bring myself to, poetic justice I suppose).

Boy it was nice to have a week without a game, because we were able to get in some practices. Probably our best practices of the year, and I think it will really help us in the upcoming tournaments.
Next weekend we host a tournament at our field.
Then on the 15th we head off to Indiana for the CABA World Series. A couple of teams from California, one from Panama, and most of them are from the MidWest. Should be a lot of fun (doubt we can win it though, as we are just a 'community team').

What does CABA stand for? I take it this is outside of Little League sanctioned tournaments?

What does CABA stand for? I take it this is outside of Little League sanctioned tournaments? Yeah it is Continental Amateur Baseball Association. The rules are High School Rules just like we play in the regular season. The teams are going to be really good, as most of the teams that go to these events recruit from large areas to get 'dream teams' that only go to tournaments. So our chances of winning are slim to none, but going somewhere and beating a bunch of teams that are worse than you doesn't get ya any better. Might as well play the really good teams, and see where ya stand (even if it is a step below).

Congrats Irish and BTB and the lefty! Thats some good stuff to read! Just catching up on this thread... Thanks, Top, BTB & Michigan fan... My son, the lefty, is very confident! BTB, good luck in your tournament. Our season ended but my boy is on a travel team. They haven't given him a chance to pitch or play 1B which I think is a mistake but I keep telling him that it's a chance to learn another position and become even better. Happy 4th! Hope everyone has a great weekend.

That's ridiculous that the pitch counts go out the window when tournament play starts...same thing happened to my leagues All-star team last weekend except our four coaches agreed that trophies be damned, protecting those young arms was the most important thing...
BTW, we had a great showing in the tournament...so proud of the kids. The only bad part was when my son, lefty, struck out to end the game, with the tieing run on second, winning run on first...he was upset and I was really upset for him...tried to use it as a life lesson which actually worked out okay...told him I was proud and that he didn't lose the game...gotta re-group and get it next time.
Happy 4th! I'll be looking forward to checking out some more updates soon.

Totally agree on the pitch counts Irish, glad you came back and updated us. Hope your boy gets a chance and does succeed.
Well we hosted a tournament at our field with 5 quality teams (including ourselves). The easiest way was for everyone to play all the other teams in pool play. Then the two lowest seeds played a single elimination game on Sunday for the right to advance and play the 1 seed in the semifinals.
We won all our pool play games (14-2, 12-2, 8-0, and 8-2). All but the last one was a run rule. Then today we beat the team we beat earlier 11-2 (another run rule). The championship game was a classic that we won 5-4. Got the championship at our own field. On the weekend we went 6-0 and outscored our opponents 58-12. The team with the second lowest runs allowed was 35.
Damn proud of them this weekend, and the work on the field, concessions, setup, umpires, etc. was damn exhausting, but all worth it when our kids jumped up and down after winning the title.
