Ok well he hasn't yet, but he is now at 299. He will get it soon, and be just the 6th lefty to win 300 games.
You folks better watch...he might be the last 300 game winner...ever.

I heard one of the ESPN.com guys talking about this on the radio yesterday and he thought there would be more at some point, but just not in the near future. I think he said we went like 15 years b/t the end of the 60's and middle of 80's without one. It was an interesting thought. Who knows, with all the specialists in the game and starters not getting as many decisions, you may be right. Never is a long time though. ;D Although if you do the math it is a daunting task. Avg 15 wins per year over 20 years. Not sure we'll see that type of longevity any more, but who knows.

Yeah, I think he could be the last one we see in the next 20 to 30 years. With 5 man rotations, pitchers only lasting til the 6th, etc. it just seems unlikely that someone is going to get to that for a LONG time...

I realized that the Big Unit developed late, but I didn't realize that 235 of his victories were after age 30.
It's things like that lend me to believe that someone that we're not even thinking about might have a shot at 300 at some point.

Also, I didn't realize that he was 45 years old. Holy shit! Second oldest to get 300 wins behind Phil Niekro..

Agreed. He was what I like to call 'effectively wild'. Could almost hit ya in the head with one pitch, and next paint a 97 MPH fastball on the corner. The pitch after that? A slider with so much tilt no one could hit it. Think it was a coincidence that all the lefties needed their day off when he was on the hill?

Congrats to the Big Unit... we won't see another 300 winner for a long time... if ever again... the only guys capable most likely have to start out young.. and each organization coddles their young pitchers by putting them on pitch counts.... couple that with 5 man rotations.... don't know that we'll ever see another one... unless Jamie Moyer pitches until he's 137... only 10 more years to get there...

Wakefield is on pace to make it in 10 years if he doesn't win another game this season. That would make him 53. Hey, why not

Fuck that. If it were up to me, he'd be out of the rotation now. He was fine last year, but the umps are squeezing him more now and that's just batting practice or tee ball.

Maybe Sabathia if he stays healthy He has 120 some wins at the age of 29. He would have to win an average of 18 games a year for 10 years to get to 300 before the age of 40. CC has won 18 games only once in his career. The idea of winning 20 games for 15 years of 15 games for 20 years is just nuts. Glavine got there, Maddux got there easily, and Smoltz would have gotten there if not for his time in the bullpen (he will probably end around 230 or so). How crazy good historically does that make the Big 3 in Atlanta.

How did they only win 1 WS?

How did they only win 1 WS? Jack Morris going 10 innings? In all honesty I am not quite sure how they didn't win 2-4 championships during those years.

Congrats to Randy. An interesting follow-up question: Which hat will he wear when he goes into the HOF? Seattle Seasons: 9+ Wins: 130 Cy Youngs: 1
Arizona Seasons: 8 Wins: 118 Cy Youngs: 4

Randy probably goes in as a Mariner but it is a tough decision. He was great with the Diamondbacks though. A really tough question (does the player still get to choose?). He might want to be the first Diamondback in the Hall.
I think Lefty Grove is the greatest lefty of all-time with Spahn, Koufax, and Johnson right behind Lefty.

He might want to be the first Diamondback in the Hall. He could be the first Mariner too (although he will likely go in the same time as Griffey, so maybe Griffey will be the first Mariner and Johnson the first D-Back).
