I am in a US Open Pool and it looks to have the chance to be a fairly big pay day.
I have 6 picks to make for round one and then we re-pick after each round. The picks cost money based on world ranking with the higher ranked players costing more money.
Thoughts for my 6 picks?

I can purchase players based on their position following each round so the first 6 don't have to be my only 6 picks, but I will spend less money if I don't have to re-pick every day. Does that make sense?

Tiger Woods (duh....) Steve Stricker (course is well suited to Stricker's game) Ian Poulter (a popular dark horse to actually win it) Brian Gay (one of only 3 two time winners on tour this year so far) Zach Johnson (see Brian Gay comments above) Ernie Els (Ernie is a gamer when it comes to majors)

Gay has been playing well this year.

Tiger could be tough at Bethpage, but the rough isn't going to be of the punchout variety, so it could open it up for other guys.
A couple of young guys that I like are:
Anthony Kim Sean O Hair Hunter Mahan

Furyk has been too close to winning to be a good dark horse. Personally, I'm going for Phil, but I don't think his head is going to be in it after his closing rounds this weekend, and I can't blame him...

I am thinking of taking a flyer on either John Merrick or John Mallinger.

I won't root for him, but I will for his wife's health. Although, it would be a really big accomplishment for him to win!!!

Tiger (Obviously) Sergio (too much talent to go Zero for the Majors for his career... can hit the ball a long way and great ball striker) Phil ( can he keep his head in the tournament.... for all 72 holes this time) JB Holmes (long hitter.. you need distance at Bethpage) Paul Casey (ranked #3 for a reason) Justin Leonard (just like always)

I like Holmes but he had missed more cuts than he has made this year.

I like Holmes but he had missed more cuts than he has made this year. ya... he's been disappointing since the Ryder Cup (which he was so good in)... but I think this course (Bethpage) favors the long hitters so much that you almost have to have really good length to survive 4 rounds there.... Hitting driver and then 3-6 iron into an US Open green is doom....

I just don't think Ogilvy can win it outright. He's got too much of a temper and lets it get to him. He won in 2006 only after Mickelson had the choke of the year on #18. I guess winning is winning, but he kinda' backed into that one.

You're welcome for the Paul Casey suggestion... I love his game... and he's really toned down the attitude issues that plagued him in the past... he can win on any track... he has the total game...

I agree with Goose.
I mentioned Ogilvy because he hits it long, and is a good putter as well. With the slower course conditions I really think it has to be a longer hitter who also puts it in the fairway. The rough is pretty penal, and the length of the holes does not favor guys who hit it short and straight.

what about Villegas? I know nothing about him except that he is a Gator, as is Brian Gay.
Since it is a Gator world that we all live in, might as well pick a Gator.

Villegas is a good bet....It is going to take someone who can get it off the tee....deep... and keep it in the fairway...Take players who rank high in those categories..and have been in the hunt before..Casey has no chance...
Goosen Tiger Ogilvy Villegas Poulter Stenson
Sleeper......Hunter Mahan...

So far I am thinking Casey, Stenson, O'Hair, Gay, Mahan and Merrick. Of course, I can always pick up Tiger in the subsequent rounds.
