Bad news for Bayern.....Florence scores early in 2d half to tie it 1-1. Very bad for the fact that away goals count twice as much and could play a damaging part of the return game in Florence in 2 weeks.

I think this result favors Bayern despite the score being tied on aggregate. Fiorentina will have to try to score at home in order to advance, and they would rather play defensively.
btw has anyone else noticed Landon Donovan lighting it up with Everton? He was man of the match in their win vs Chelsea (the first in 10 years for Everton) and he started vs Sporting Portugal. Bodes well for South Africa to have him playing at top form.

Bayern advanced past Fiorentina today despite losing 3-2, the away goals being the difference.

In zero degree weather and pouring rain in Florence, it looked for a long time like the champions league dreams of F.C. Bayern would disolve in the Bavarian air. After goals by Juan Vargas (28.) and twice Stevan Jovetic (54. and 64.) the Fiorentina had already led 2:0 and 3:1 and thus were on a quarterly final course. For Bayern, Mark van Bommel scored at the 60 minute mark. Then, like a lightning bolt, with a strike of genius Robben hit the upper left corner of the net and instantly became the German Record Champion's "Hero of Florence". Bayern advances on goal difference since away goals count twice what home goals count.

And Lyon tied Real Madrid at the Bernabeu to advance! It warms my heart to see a French club boot Ronaldo and co. out of European play.
