LSU breaks open a nail bitter by scoring 4 runs in the top of the eighth to beat Vandy 4 to 2 in the kick off of their opening SEC series. LSU now stands 17-2 on the year and Vandy 16-3. Nola gave up his first run of the year and gets a no decision.

We finally blew a late lead and we weren't able to win. Led 2-0 late, blew the lead in the 8th. Our closers are a major issue for us, no lead is ever safe. Going to cost us some games this year.

Vols win 5-1 today, it's a double header so the third game is today too.

Vandy takes the first game of today's doubleheader 5 to 3 and even up the series. Game two starts in about 45 minutes.

Vols win game two 4-1. Would have loved to sweep them, but at least we swept them today. Maybe finally blowing a late lead and losing Friday was the wake up call we needed.

On my way back from a wild weekend in Columbia. Coach Holbrook lost the first game for us. We were up 4-2 and Montgomery started to tire and had thrown over 110 pitches. He loaded the bases with 2 outs on a single walk and hbp. Instead of going to a bullpen that hasn't allowed a run in over 50 innings, he leaves a laboring Montgomery out there who leaves a fastball up and gives up a grand slam. He 2nd game was classic USC. We were down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth and max shrock who was not playing due to a sprained ankle pinch hits and hits the game tying home run. We win that one in 10. The second game of the double header we win 3-1 in regulation. Game 1 and the first part of game 2 were pretty ugly but they battled through and got the series win.

Gt fan. That kinda went the way I thought. I figured Nola could match beede but vandy has better starting pitching overall then just about every team in the country.

Glad to see it. I thought it was ridiculous that nc state was being touted as a top ten team.

Yeh, Vandy outplayed the Tigers for sure. Out hit us 29 to 14. If the Tigers are going to be one of the elite teams, they will have to pick up their hitting, although as you stated, Vandy has an outstanding pitching staff. Seems like they always do, though.

Question for my fellow SECers. Auburn is the team I probably know the least about in the SEC. We play them this weekend. What should I expect? What kind of team are they?

Question for my fellow SECers. Auburn is the team I probably know the least about in the SEC. We play them this weekend. What should I expect? What kind of team are they? Over the years Auburn has not been one of the upper teams in the SEC. They are 13-7 on the year and like most of the SEC non conference opponents (not too impressive). They did take t of 3 from A&M and the Aggies are usually pretty good in baseball. Sorry not much help.

Question for my fellow SECers. Auburn is the team I probably know the least about in the SEC. We play them this weekend. What should I expect? What kind of team are they? Last Season | The 2013 season was the latest in a long line of disappointments for Auburn, which has been to the NCAA tournament once since 2005. (You have to go back more than a decade, to 2002 and 2003, to find a stretch when the Tigers went to the national playoffs in back-to-back seasons.) Whatever hopes the Tigers had of making it to a regional ended with a one-and-done performance in Hoover. That meant the end of John Pawlowski's relatively unsuccessful tenure at Auburn and the beginning of the Sunny Galloway Era, which if nothing else gave Auburn fans a reason for hope. And given what happened with the football team this year, who knows? Who's Gone in 2014 | Not much, but the players who are gone are still blows to the team. Garrett Cooper, whose .354/.481/.540 slash line easily led all Auburn batters with regular playing time last season, is gone -- as is Cullen Wacker, who was second or third in average, on-base percentage and slugging with a .320/.383/.420 season in 2013. Cooper also tied for the team lead in home runs with seven. The Tigers also lose Conner Kendrick, arguably the team's best pitcher with a 2.13 ERA over 80.1 innings. Kendrick had one pretty bizarre stat that skews things slightly: He allowed 19 earned runs but 34 runs in 2013, one of the widest splits I've ever seen in baseball. Not that he was alone in that. Tigers pitching allowed 56 unearned runs on the season, in part because of the 66 errors Auburn committed. While that number's not outrageous, it was enough to land Auburn at 11th in the SEC in fielding percentage. (Yes, I know fielding percentage is flawed, but there's not a lot of good sabermetric defensive info on college baseball.) Who's Back in 2014 | A very experienced starting lineup. In fact, that might be the best hope for the Tigers this year. If Ryan Tella can bounce back from a disappointing 2013 and other returning starters like Damek Tomscha, who shared the team lead in home runs with Cooper, and Jordan Ebert keep up their production from last season, this could be an experienced and potentially potent team. Michael O'Neal, who recorded a 2.73 ERA over a team-leading 89.0 innings, and Terrance Dedrick, who rang up 10 saves, will anchor opposite sides of the pitching staff. Prognosis | This is a hard team to pin down. Sometimes, experienced teams who had at least a mediocre season the year before can experience huge leaps in their record, and Auburn would fit into that category. And Galloway, who unsurprisingly sounds confident about his team, adds an extra wild card as a well-regarded coach in his first season on the Plains. The Tigers will almost certainly make the SEC tournament, given that the field remains at an absurd 12 teams, and have at least an outside chance of contending for the NCAA tournament as well.

The Vols beat AP in the mid week game, lost series opener to Auburn last night 3-2. We deserved to lose, we had the bases loaded THREE TIMES!!!!!!!!! Got ZERO points!! You will lose ever single time you do something like that, iv'e never seen anything like it. I try to not let one game piss me off so bad, I look at the entire series, but that was bullsh%^. Our own fault.

Hey Brad, winning games in the SEC is a little tougher than non conference games. The SEC teams are beating up on each other. Vandy take two from LSU last week and then loses two to the Miss St Bulldogs. Kentucky beats up on SC. And NC Reb should be proud of his Rebels. Maybe they are not as bad as he thinks.
Should be an exciting year in SEC baseball.

Vols and Carolina had a good one going yesterday. It was in the 11th then rain postponed it. Carolina beat us today in the 14th inning. It's to lose like that. The flow of the game is dead, teams aren't as loose. It's was like a sudden death 3 inning game.
