I think it's amazing that Florida is going to get a head start on their new Head Coach before Tennessee is. What the hell is going on? Nick Saban is essentially responsible for every program in the SEC hiring and firing guys like I change razor blades. It seems that I might change razor blades less often than some of these programs do coaching staffs! When the gators hire the next coach (unless they decide Shannon is the guy) that will be the 6th head coach since spurrier left after the 2001 season. Has anyone else gone through that many this century?

Here's a guy who wants the job.
Although the Florida job recently opened, we’ve got a familiar face positioning for the job: Troy Elliott.
If you’re unfamiliar, Elliott was a defensive coordinator for a middle school team in Gadsden, Alabama before making the jump to head coach. He’s dropped a couple of letters in the past, including an note to LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama, and he’s back this time for Florida, via 247sports:
“Dear Mr. Stricklin,
My name is Troy Elliott, Head Ball Coach at the University of Florida. Allow that to stew for a moment. Go back at the top and reread. Allow the concept of it to permeate through your brain and nest itself in your heart. The University of Florida has a rich history of coaches through its history, such as Steve Spurrier, Ron Zook, Urban Meyer and Angry Will. I want to add to that pantheon of greatness, by becoming the first football coach to make the jump to the SEC from the Middle School ranks.
As I’m sure you already know, I just completed my first season as Head Football Coach for the Sardis Middle School Lions. During my time as head coach, I have been able to introduce such novel concepts as “deciding who my quarterback is going to be,” and “completing a forward pass.” I feel like these concepts will revolutionize Florida Football and bring in a new era of the Fun and Gun.
I also am familiar with the controversy that will inevitably follow a FBS football coach. While my players always use their own credit cards, I did deal with the turmoil of players sharing a lunch room number earlier this year. The Otis Spunkmeyer Incident resulted in suspensions and a tremendous number of prepackaged muffins lost. My life was personally threatened by Otis himself. I didn’t worry about it too much, because death threats are just part of the job.
I believe that I will fit right in as Head Football Coach at Florida. I use numerous strategies to connect with my players and assistant coaches. Just this past year, I took all my assistant coaches on a deep-sea fishing trip. Unfortunately, I consumed a hard lemonade on the way out and spent the majority of the trip looking for mermaids. While I am ashamed of this, it is better than becoming intoxicated and trying to MAKE a mermaid. I keep my naked shark hugs at home, so nothing to worry about there.
I also am connected enough to the players to recognize what is cool. I loved the uniforms that made Florida players look like real alligators. I immediately took the same approach with our middle school team, constructing uniforms out of fur to make us look like ferocious lions. I spent all weekend sewing manes onto shoulder pads while humming “The Circle of Life.” The uniforms resulted in 16 heat strokes, but damn, we looked good.
My heart yearns to be in Gainesville, getting a start on my new job. I am excited to get to live in a place as classy as Gainesville and become a real “A Florida man….” It is so nice that you have a town with all the charm of deadly hurricanes while avoiding the pesky annoyance of the beach. I have my jorts ready. The best part of this is that I was born in 1989, so I have existed for the entirety of Florida’s football relevance. Please do not delay in your decision. I don’t want to rush, but I expect to hear from Tennessee very, very soon.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Troy Elliott”
Will this be the time Elliott gets his chance? We can only hope.

www.gatorsports.com/2017/10/dooley-search-gators-next-football-coach/Dooley: In search of … Gators’ next football coachFirst of all, a word of caution. You are entering a construction zone. Please wear a hard hat and protective goggles. You don’t want to get a reader’s comment in your eye or an unnamed source with knowledge of the situation landing upside your head. This is a dangerous area we are heading into. Look, is that (coach’s name here) walking into the Hunter’s Crossing Publix? My pastry chef told me that the wife of (coach’s name here) was looking at houses in Gainesville. Scott Stricklin had dinner with (coach’s name here) at Ballyhoo according to a source/saucier. Aren’t coaching searches fun? Stricklin, the UF athletic director, is going to do everything he can to keep this quiet until the big unveiling. Good luck with that unless you plan to communicate only through morse code and leave the agents out of it. Things will get out and a lot of them will be fairy tales. But there will be morsels of truth that are mighty tasty. Here’s what we know for sure — Florida will hire a coach and there is no frontrunner. When Stricklin said Sunday night he has “an idea” he was speaking more about who might be in the pool than who he will reach in to pull out. Let’s hop in and stay in the shallow end for now. In alphabetical order while remembering Will Muschamp wasn’t on any early lists before he was hired at UF after the 2010 season: Candidate Dino Babers
Fun factor: The Syracuse coach soared to national prominence when his team upset Clemson and took Miami to the wire. And offense (ranked 29th this season) is his specialty. Party pooper: He’s 56 years old and hasn’t really been on the big stage as a head coach. Candidate Jeff Brohm
Fun factor: Really good offensive coach who won 30 of 40 at Western Kentucky before getting Purdue job. Party pooper: Purdue is 3-5 in his first foray into the Power Five and the offense is 82nd in the nation. Candidate Neal Brown
Fun factor: The 37-year-old Troy coach recently beat LSU and has a working knowledge of the SEC. Plus, he’s one of the brightest coaches out there. Party pooper: Does hiring the head coach from Troy really move the needle in Gainesville? Candidate Matt Campbell
Fun factor: The guy has Iowa State — Iowa State! — in the Top 25 and has two huge upset wins already this season. Party pooper: The buyout is more than $9 million and his recruiting wheelhouse is the Midwest. Candidate Dave Clawson
Fun factor: He’s winning at Wake Forest, which might get him a statue. He also has won at Richmond and Bowling Green. And he’s a really good dude. Party pooper: We can’t unsee his one year as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator. Candidate Scott Frost
Fun factor: Frost took over an 0-12 team and had it undefeated two years later with an offense that leads the nation in scoring. Checks a lot of the personality boxes. Party pooper: It’s a small sample size as a head coach and Nebraska, his alma mater, is likely to call. Candidate Justin Fuente
Fun factor: Won big at Memphis after taking over a wreck of a program and is winning big at Virginia Tech. Party pooper: His buyout is $6 million, $5 million after Dec. 15, and he’s already making SEC money ($3.2 a year). Candidate Mike Gundy
Fun factor: Oklahoma State is third in the nation in passing offense and has an outside shot at the College Football Playoff. He has built a consistent winner. Party pooper: The buyout is $13.8 million and Florida would have to waive its no-mullet rule (kidding). Candidate Chip Kelly
Fun factor: Nobody has ever questioned his ability to coach offense and his Oregon teams were never boring to watch. Party pooper: His NCAA show cause means Florida would have to convince the SEC’s commissioner that hiring him is a good idea. We won’t even get into the personality issues. Candidate Lane Kiffin
Fun factor: You know what he did at Alabama and he’s killing it offensively at Florida Atlantic at 482.4 yards per game. Party pooper: Come on. Candidate Mike Leach
Fun factor: You want fun, the lover of pirates gives great news conferences and knows how to run an offense. Party pooper: Florida is looking for a certain type of personality and while Leach has personality, a guy who once talked about his players and their “fat little girlfriends” is not a great fit. Candidate Chad Morris
Fun factor: The SMU coach knows offense and his smashmouth spread has turned things around for the Mustangs. Party pooper: His recruiting chops are in the state of Texas and he’s an A&M grad, which makes Kevin Sumlin nervous. Candidate Dan Mullen
Fun factor: He knows Florida, knows how to develop quarterbacks and can take three-stars and make them play like five-stars. Party pooper: Mullen’s bedside manner is not the best and Stricklin has an intimate knowledge of how difficult he can be to work with. His cause wasn’t helped when his wife, Megan, said publicly this summer that she was afraid to go grocery shopping in Gainesville if the Gators didn’t score in the 40s. Candidate Mike Norvell
Fun factor: Has won 15 games in two years at Memphis and his offense is ranked 11th in the nation. Party pooper: He’s another hot coach at a Group of Five school who hasn’t done it under the brightest spotlights. Candidate Gary Patterson
Fun factor: The TCU coach is one of the best in the country and has turned the Horned Frogs into a contender. Plus, Steve Spurrier likes him. Party pooper: There is no indication he wants to leave and he has a hefty buyout of $7.1 million. Candidate Mark StoopsFun factor: He’s made Kentucky into a bowl team by building up the recruiting base. Hey, Bob Stoops isn’t getting back into coaching, but at least he’d come to some of the games. Party pooper: Receivers left uncovered against Florida. Twice. That’s all you need to know. Candidate Charlie StrongFun factor: Strong knows the culture, would fit right in and recruit the heck out of the state of Florida Party pooper: His time at Texas is a big red flag whether it is fair or not. Candidate Willie TaggartFun factor: A great offensive mind, the Oregon coach pulled USF out of a tailspin and he’s from Florida so he knows how to recruit here. Party pooper: Taggart’s overall record as a head coach is 45-49.

Think Matt Campbell if he hires a good DC and some recruiting guys with SEC roots is the best candidate in my mind. $9 million buyout is huge. UF is still paying Muschamp. Still owes Colorado State on Mac I guess if you ask me who I would want, at this point I would go with Frost (watch the wheels fall off UCF now that I said it) It's a big gamble, because he hasn't even been a head coach for 2 years yet. It could be a homerun or a major swing and a miss. The bucks will be huge to get him because more than likely UF would have to compete with Nebraska. At the very least, if UF goes with him, there will be a bidding war between UF and Nebraska. He won't be cheap. I think UF wants to go with someone in their 40's. I would prefer that whoever it is has ties to either the state of Florida or UF, or has someone on his staff that does. Meyer didn't, but he retained Charlie Strong. I think Strong is UF's fallback choice, not Mullen. I could be wrong. If it is Strong, then he better get someone that would absolutely excite the fan base as an offensive coordinator. I have absolutely no idea if it would work at all, because no one has made any attempt at talking to him for years (there must be some reason why), but it would probably get a lot of Gator fans happy if Strong is hired and they get Kerwin Bell as OC. I don't know how the recruits would like it, but a large portion of the fan base would. There are other fallbacks like DJ Durkin and Larry Fedora. Both of those have ties to UF, and neither would (at this point) elicit any excitement from the UF fan base.

That’s sort of why I thought Campbell because Frost would be a big risk but I think he would use UF to bid up his price at Nebraska where he really wants to go.

That’s sort of why I thought Campbell because Frost would be a big risk but I think he would use UF to bid up his price at Nebraska where he really wants to go. Probably true. I know I'm looking at if from orange and blue blinders, but both UF and Nebraska have unrealistic fan bases that don't give their coach much time to succeed. Mike Riley has been at Nebraska the same amount of time as Mcelwain, and Nebraska has gotten rid of coaches that seemingly weren't doing a bad job (Pelini and Solich) So he would have to win fast at both. Maybe being an alum would get him a little more time at Nebraska - that would be slightly in favor of Nebraska I would think that it may be easier to recruit in Florida than it would be in Nebraska - that would be bigger in favor of UF I think that both would be able to pay the same - even Florida got Meyer when Norte Dame was also trying to get him, and Meyer has said that Norte Dame was his dream job. I don't know what Frost wants, but it's not that much of a stretch to say that UF may be able to get him, even competing against Nebraska. .

In the end he might use it as a way to drive up his price and he may go to Florida I don’t know the guy from Adam. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to get him just know that whenever a coach is in a power position to negotiate I normally give the advantage to their former school.

I think Frost would have longer runway at Neb v Uf because he’s an alum which might work to his benefit. Overall to Bds point on the other thread, it is getting tougher to recruit to Neb because they don’t play the Texas schools any longer.
I have a feeling that decision would come down to more emotional sensibilities for Frost.

You are thinking in tearms of a realistic football fan, not a Gator fan. I don't think Gundy would leave Okie State. He's too expensive even if he does. Meyer had the benefit of having a great recruiter (Strong) on his staff that knew UF and knew the state of Florida. If UF pays what they would have to pay to get Gundy, it better be a no doubt slam dunk, and I don't think it is.

I don’t know that there are any slam dunks on that list. Another interesting one would be Patterson at TCU but I do t think he’d necessarily be willing to go either. I do think Norvell has a bright future and what he’s done with Riley Ferguson is impressive. I think he’s every bit as good as Frost but without the ties to Fl that Frost now has. I just don’t see Fl taking the gamble with him. So it seems like if I were Uf, id be seeing what I could do to pry Mullen from Stark Vegas.

Mullen on his Defensive Coordinator leaving MSU for the same position at UF: "I don't like anybody leaving for what I would view as lateral moves, to be perfectly honest with you," Mullen's wife a couple of weeks ago: “The former school we were at, won two national championships there, won practically every game we played for four years there,” she said of UF. “It wasn’t if you won or lost. If we didn’t score 43 points or more, I was going to the grocery store in Orlando where I worked with the Golf Channel and I was driving the groceries back to Gainesville because it was that bad. I’m just being honest. … Here in Starkville, the people are so positive and so appreciative. ...” I like Mullen. TimTebow likes Mullen. But he would have a little hole with the UF fan base to dig out of to begin with.

The nut-lickers would never beat us again.

I was thinking the same thing as I read the post, some interesting names but very little that would cause excitement for Gator fans outside of a few names. With the current landscape of college football fans just aren't willing to give a new coach and coaching staff the time needed to implement their plan for the team. The Gators aren't a dumpster fire, they've had success recently and believe they are a top tier program. They will want to win right away and any incoming coach only has to look at how McElwain was treated and dismissed 7 games after winning the SEC 2 years in a row to see what awaits them. Hell, a lot of UGA fans were unwilling to give Kirby Smart 3 years to turn around the culture in Athens and implement his vision for the program because we had a great and nice coach who averaged 10 wins a season we'd just ran out of town. If he wasn't undefeated this season and say 5-3 with tough losses to ND, Miss State and UF I have no doubt he'd be on a hot seat with demands he win big next year or be fired. We as fans have no patience anymore.

I meant how a HC coach candidate might view how Mac was dismissed. I think both sides could have handled his coaching tenure better. Mac had been popping off several times about a lack of administrative support over the last couple of years. Clearly they didn't have a good relationship and the perception is he didn't get along with the AD and staff and the fan base was extremely restless and disappointed with his lack of offense. If I was an established and well liked coach on this list like Patterson, Fuente or Mullen it might be better to stay where they are and be a big fish in a little pond than head to UF and its turmoil.

Mac was actually given contract extensions (twice) and was answered "yes" to his request for more facilities and support more than any other coach before him. A reporter said on his first interview, when Mac just got to UF, that Mac told him that if he had known the facilities were this bad, he wouldn't have taken the job. And it looks like a pattern with Mac, from reading now what some in Colorado are reporting. I think that all the suspended players were his recruits. The offense has at best remained stagnet. And he continued to be loose with his mouth. If you continued to publicly bad mouth your employer, you wouldn't last long with your employer. I would hope that the next coach and the UF administration will be on the same page from the start, and that both parties thoroughly vet each other.

I do think we get caught up in some of these things like he doesn’t have Florida ties. Well if he hires a couple of guys who have recruiting ties it will be fine.
It’s why I think an offensive guy can hire a good DC and give them control and hire good recruiters and allow the university to be a major draw to kids.

Saban didn't have ties to the SE prior to going to LSU. Carroll had zero ties in CFB in the decade or more prior to landing at USC. Urban didn't have ties in FL prior to UF. Stoops didn't have ties to B12 country prior to Oklahoma. And so it goes. Right? If you hire the right coach who puts together the right staff and you allow them to go through the process, they should be just fine.

The first one is just a petty Sabanesque quote that can be dismissed. And his wife might be the bigger kicker. If she really believes all that, there might not be anything that UF could do to get them there.

No doubt, he put the University of Florida at tremendous legal risk. Can't argue any of that, as a Gator fan you would know the situation better than me.

Isn't one of the knocks on Michigan is they always want a "Michigan Man?" Those haven't always worked out for them.

You know a Michigan man like Bo (who previously coached at Miami of Ohio).
