DeMers Throws First Perfect Game In UW History
2/24/2018 | 4:30 PM
SEATTLE – Junior Joe DeMers made history in game one of a double header Saturday at Husky Ballpark throwing the first ever perfect game in UW history and just the fifth by a Pac-12 pitcher. DeMers (1-0) needed 84 pitches to set all 27 UC Riverside (2-3) batters down in order in the Huskies 8-0 victory.
DeMers struck out nine Highlanders and reached a three-ball count just once in recording the ninth no-hitter in Washington history. He was efficient all night and threw over 10 pitches in just three innings, with a high of 13. In a four-inning span from the fourth to seventh, DeMers threw just 30 pitches. It allowed him to be relatively fresh when he arrived in the ninth inning.
DeMers got Nathan Webb to roll out to third base for the first out and caught pinch hitter Skyler De Los Reyes looking for his career-high tying ninth strikeout and the second out of the ninth inning. Catcher Anthony Lepre lofted the first pitch he saw harmlessly to right fielder where Kaiser Weiss snagged the ball for the third out, setting off an exuberant celebration on the infield.
"It was awesome. Everything was working for me," said DeMers, who last threw a perfect game in 2015 as a senior at College Park High School, one of three no-hitters for him that season. "JK (Pitching Coach Jason Kelly) and I were on the same page and the defense was great behind me, so I was just filling in the zone."
The last no hitter by the Huskies was a combined no-no on March 12, 2006 by Tim Lincecum and Nick Hagadone. In UW history, only five of the team's no hitters were nine innings long, making DeMers the fourth Husky to throw nine innings of no-hit ball.
The Huskies (3-2) strung together four hits off UC Riverside starter Trenton Toplikar (1-1) to grab the early 2-0 lead. Joe Wainhouse got things started with a lead-off single and was joined on the basepaths one-out later when Christian Jones singled. The bottom of the order sent them home with two-out singles, first on a base hit by No. 8 hitter K.J. Brady followed by Ben Baird.
Washington batted around in the fifth inning and scored four times to break the game wide open. The Huskies scored twice on sacrifice bunts that turned into adventures in the field for UC Riverside. Braiden Ward laid the first one down for the first run and was safe on the play when Yeager Taylor dropped the ball at first base. After a Wainhouse RBI single, Levi Jordan laid down a bunt back to the pitcher and Ward beat the throw home to make the score 5-0. A passed ball allowed the final run of the inning to score.
Catcher Nick Kahle drove home two runs on a double in the sixth inning for the Huskies' final two runs of the game.
