After a six-year hiatus, Tim Tebow is coming back to the NFL. The Jaguars plan to sign the former NFL quarterback, CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones confirmed. As previously report, Tebow will play tight end for the Jaguars. Tebow, 33, recently worked out for the Jaguars and head coach Urban Meyer, who coached Tebow during his record-setting run at the University of Florida. A former Heisman Trophy winner, Tebow went 9-7 as the Broncos' starting quarterback before spending one season with the New York Jets. He then had two uneventful stops with the Jets and Patriots before spending nearly five years in the Mets' minor league system. Along with playing tight end, Tebow may be asked to serve as a mentor for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jaguars-plan-to-sign-tim-tebow-to-one-year-deal-to-play-tight-end-in-jacksonville/

We will never know but he might have had a solid NFL career had he made the move years ago.

He could also probably played a LB slot.

He could have been used similar to the way Sean Payton uses Taysom Hill with the Saints.
Grant it, Taysom runs a 4.4 and Tebow runs a 4.71.

Are the Jags really going to use a roster spot on a 33 year old converted QB that’s been out of the NFL for 6 years? We will see if he makes the team.

It just amazes me that so many people are so quick to criticize this move, and even place a racial spin on it. If he is good enough to make the team, which is yet to be proven, I can't wait to see what happens on the field. So far, it is just a matter of coaches being impressed with his workouts.

He will make the team. Doesn’t mean he can play, hell he spent four years in the NFL as a QB and he can’t throw a football. Stolen from Mark Schlereth on local radio the other day.

This! The guy is in better shape than 90% of the league. It remains to be seen if he can play TE, but his time off means nothing.

Yeah, but it's stupid because it's a high risk/low reward situation and I do think the time off does mean something because there is a mental component to athletes. So you are talking about a 33 year old that has never played the position and because of that, his ceiling is likely a red zone gadget player. Not only does he have to learn the blocking schemes and route trees but he also has to learn the nuances of how to block and how to run routes which mentally puts him behind every other NFL tight end. The absolute best case scenario is Tebow can function well enough to be a red zone player. Worst case scenario is that Tebow isn't good enough to be a legitimate tight end and Meyer leaves him on the roster anyways because of their prior relationship. This kills Meyer's credibility. The fact that this is being entertained signals the Jaguars TE room is pretty bad, so IMO Meyer would be better off bringing in veterans that have shown they play competently rather than spending time with a low ceiling project type signing. If no other NFL team would sign Tebow, it's probably a bad idea for the Jaguars to do so.

I think it worth the gamble. We will see what happens. On the other hand, Meyer and credibility is an oxymoron.

Speaking of the Jags, they are playing Miami in London in October, and I just registered to buy tickets.

If no other NFL team would sign Tebow, it's probably a bad idea for the Jaguars to do so. Best case scenario (or worse for all the haters) is Tebow makes the team, but he will literally take a pay-cut. I assume he makes more than the NFL league minimum in his career now. Worse case scenario (or best, for the haters) is Tebow doesn’t work out, and he goes on making more than he would if he played in the NFL. It’s that simple.

If Tebow had moved to tight end out of college - no doubt in my mind he could have become a decent tight end. He is a hard worker and has good athletic skills.
At 33 he might have a hard time - but why not give him a chance. He would still have a few years left at 33.

And still Jags can cut him if he doesn't work out. No firm contract. But would Tebow remain as a reserve?

From what I’ve seen, Meyer may be looking to use Tebow like he did in 2006. More as a utility player, not necessarily a TE.
Don’t know if it’s true or not.
