Made several moves today.
They traded for CP Richard Rodriguez, Adam Duval, Eddie Rosario, and Jorge Soler.
Why? I don't know. Without Acuna and Soroka, this team has no shot at making a run in the postseason, even if they are able to win a weak East.
Soler is batting under .200 and is a defensive liability. Rosario currently has a sub .700 OPS and Duval is basically league average at the plate.
Despite only being 4 games out, they should have been sellers. It was a good time to add to their minor league depth that has been depleted by international sanctions and some really weak drafts since Anthopoulos took over and got rid of good scouts for mediocre ones.
I'm not a fan of Anthopoulos. Signing Ozuna to a 4 year deal with Acuna and 2 outfielders that are among the top 30 prospects and close to being MLB ready was a mistake. He spent a lot of money just to block one of those guys for a player who has been consistently inconsistent over his career.
I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up trading Drew Waters before next season starts. I believe Waters will be the much better player between he and Pache, when all is said and done.

I make this a MLB trading thread.
The Astros sent infielder Abraham Toro and right-handed reliever Joe Smith to the Mariners for righty relievers Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero.
The Astros land another right-handed reliever in Phil Maton in exchange for Myles Straw.
I haven't followed MLB as close as I use to and I am not really up on players and mostly no clue if they play for other teams. Their pitching has been lousy in some of games I have watched - usually just the late innings.
Myles Straw was the Stros starting center fielder. And he some wheels. But IMO if the Stros are going to make a run at a world series - they need pitching.

Kendall Graveman is the reliever the Stros were after. He should make the Stros bullpen a lot stronger.

Giants got Kris Bryant for peanuts.
Dodgers get Max Scherzer and Trea Turner for 4 prospects including Kiebert Ruiz and Josiah Gray
Mets got Javier Baez and Trevor Williams for 1 prospect(last seasons 1st round pick) with just 24 pro at bats under his belt.

With this week goes the core that brought the World Series back to the north side in 2016. It sucks seeing them all gone, it truly does.

Are they even going to let a team from the NL East into the playoffs?

I hear they are going to expand it to allow 12 teams per league. Top 4 teams get a bye while the other 8 play a series at the team with the best record's park.

Atlanta is currently .500. Have not been above .500 all year but don't think they've been more than 4 or 5 games below all year either. just a meh kind of year.

Yeah, it has been that. Nice seeing Austin Riley coming around. Honestly, kind of hard to expect much more losing Siroca for the year again; Acuna for the year and probably part of next year; Ocuna forever; D'arnoud out for most of the year; losing a bunch out of the bullpen; Ynoa breaking his hand etc. That is a pretty big chunk out of your team.

Insanity tonight. Braves trailed 4-2 in top of 8th. Cards get two outs on very hard hit balls right at someone. Braves get a single and then Riley hits tying homerun. Then Swanson gets a double. Then, unbelievably the Cards walk 5 consecutive batters and walk 4 runs in to take 8-4 lead. Walking in 4 runs in succession is close to a major league record. If Braves hang on they will have gone over .500 for the first time all year.

Braves are playing good ball right now. All of the trades seem to be panning out. It is strange how a player that is in a slump can get hot with a change of atmosphere.

They have a decent chance of winning the East. If they do, I think their chances of making it out of the divisional round are slim. Pederson, Soler and Duval have all hit since AA brought them over.

I think they fell to 5 games under twice, and 4 under a few times. Almost every time, they won a few to get to within a game under. I was wondering if they were allergic to .500+ baseball. Of course this team set the MLB record for most games alternating wins and losses at 18, I think.

And Soroka won't be back until next summer at the earliest. That will be at least 2 full years without pitching for him. I hope he can regain form, I really loved watching this kid pitch. He is a special pitcher. I feel like his surgery was botched.

That 4 year deal for 52 million dollars on a guy with one successful year as a closer is really paying dividends.

That 4 year deal for 52 million dollars on a guy with one successful year as a closer is really paying dividends. Probably a better gamble than a guy who has had 10 successful years. Arms don't last forever on pitchers. It is always a gamble and in an arms race (current MLB) you have to pay when gambling. Still hard to argue with being tied for first place. It is baseball and the best team doesn't always win. If they get hot at the right time it could be a very good season.

It is baseball and the best team doesn't always win. If they get hot at the right time it could be a very good season. I'm of the mindset that you don't give out that kind of contract for any closer. Kimbrel, Chapman, Hader, is one thing. If your the Yankees, Dodgers, or a team that has deep pockets. The length of the contract is my biggest issue. That and the fact that as talented as Smith is, he really doesn't have that bulldog mentality that you want in a closer. I understand you don't always win. I'm the only Braves fan that I know that wasn't upset in 2015/2016 during the early stages of the rebuild. It had to be done. The reason it had to be done was a few contracts that are awfully similar to this. Like, you don't pay an inconsistent ace(I never considered Derek Lowe an ace) to a big 4 year deal beginning in his age 36 season. Then it was Uggla, and Upton. None made sense. Neither does Will Smith or a 4 year deal for Ozuna They have a good shot at winning the division this year. However, having lost what they have to injuries this year, I don't see them being able to knock out the Giants. Or the Dodgers. Or the Padres or Brewers for that matter. long term matters more to me than one season, and the farm system isn't as deep as was. I think they'll resign Freddie. If they can't afford it, I can point to two contracts as the reason why. It is hard to argue with being tied to first place. But, you've seen me post around here, right?

BTW, how can you possibly tell a Braves fan who was around during the 90's that the best team doesn't always win? While very true, the 5th or 6th best team in one league does so much less often.

Austin Riley has really become some kind of a ballplayer. He saved that game today with that play at 3d. He won't win the MVP, but boy he has to be considered.

Austin Riley has really become some kind of a ballplayer. He saved that game today with that play at 3d. He won't win the MVP, but boy he has to be considered. I didn't watch the game, just checked the box score. Saw Smith walked two. This is what I'm talking about as far as his mentality. You could see it last post season. He is very timid going into the strike zone in. The bigger the situation, the more timid he is. Yeah, Riley is big time. I followed along with his progression since he was drafted in '15. I knew he would hit for power, and be able to stick at 3rd. How much he has improved defensively, along with him showing this year he can hit for average is exciting. The average is no fluke. It didn't take long when he came up to realize he could hammer fastballs up in the zone, but several of his homeruns this past month have been on really good breaking balls. I know two that I've seen recently were breaking balls low and in off the plate. The kid can flat out hit. If they resign Freddie, that infield with him and Riley on the corners with Swanson and Albies may be the best in the game. Don't look now, but, Shea Langaliers will be ready to go at C next year. He may spend a month or two at AAA, but, this kid will be an elite defensive back stop that very few will even try to run on and he will hit 20 or more HR's depending on how many AB's. Add that to an outfield of Acuna, Waters, and Pache...they will do damage. At the plate and in the field.

I really wish Snitker didn't play Heredia over Pederson against every lefty. Pederson is the better player and he's hitting lefties better than Heredia.

Talk about flipping a switch, from a win a game lose a game team to first place. I guess bringing in that new outfield was a Jumpstart the Braves needed.
