WTF do they mean that this is the worse hurricane to hit Louisiana since the 1800's? Hurricane Ina was a cat 4, Katrina was a cat 5 and the destruction was far worse. Remember New Orleans being under 8' of water? Have people become so stupid that they will believe any shit shoveled to them? There have been several Cat 4 hurricanes to hit LA in the last 49 years, lets embellish Ina to a Cat 6 so all the fools will believe that.

I think Katrina was a cat 3 at landfall. No it was a 5 I'm sorry depends on where you look, but the damage from Katrina was almost, if not worse than Hurricane Andrew in 1992 Edit to add: they only started grading hurricanes in 1961 so who knows. There were some bad ones in the 30's to 50's

Katrina hit New Orleans almost head on - but I also believe it was only a Cat 3. But some lesser rated storms have more water surge and that is the worst damage a hurricane can cause.

Hurricane Katrina was a large Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that caused over 1,800 deaths and $125 billion in damage in late August 2005, particularly in the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas. It was at the time the costliest tropical cyclone on record and is now tied with 2017's Hurricane Harvey. The storm was the twelfth tropical cyclone, the fifth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record to make landfall in the contiguous United States.
Katrina originated on August 23, 2005, as a tropical depression from the merger of a tropical wave and the remnants of Tropical Depression Ten. Early the following day, the depression intensified into a tropical storm as it headed generally westward toward Florida, strengthening into a hurricane two hours before making landfall at Hallandale Beach on August 25. After briefly weakening to tropical storm strength over southern Florida, Katrina emerged into the Gulf of Mexico on August 26 and began to rapidly intensify. The storm strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico[2] before weakening to Category 3 strength at its second landfall on August 29 over southeast Louisiana and Mississippi.

The helipad I worked on in Cameron LA was 50' underwater from Carla in 61 Hurricane Audrey killed about 500 people in 1956. Cameron has had their share of storms. A normal high tide puts the hwy under water.

Pretty sure Katrina hit MS, not LA. Bay St Louis /Waveland area I believe.
LA basically dodged a bullet with Katrina.
It was days later when a Levee breach filled the city up with water that was catastrophic.

Well they didn't give hurricanes grades until 1960 so we don't know.

Camille 1969 was a cat 5 on landfall but it didn't hit LA directly, it hit MS.

Yeah I was in Bay St Louis in 2016 for work and ate unch in a restaurant across the street from the bay. Probably a good 300-400 yards from the water during normal times. They had pics of how the surge basically dug down 8-10 ft right to the front of the restaurant.

My most vivid memory of the MS Gulf Coast after Katrina was home of friends who lived between the railroad tracks and Hwy 90 (those who are familiar with the area, know where I am talking about). They only had a slab left. The storm surge and retreat pealed every piece of tile from the slab.

I was in Bay St. Louis after the storm and was being shown the damage it did - basically the only thing standing across the street from the water was a bank vault - the bank building was gone.
I went there to help a church that was building homes for those that had lost them. They had groups of people that would come in for a week at a time and help build the homes. I was helping the church with some computer network issues. One of the staff gave me a tour of the damage it had caused. The bridge on Hwy 90 toward Biloxi had just reopened if I remember right.
They told me a they had a 22 foot storm surge.

Couldn’t remember at first but when I googled it, that is exactly the place. Had lunch there with folks from the Habitat for Humanity in the are that were still building homes for people affected by Katrina. Food was really good there and the pics they had on the wall of the devastation were unreal.

Bay St. Louis was destroyed. A huge water surge is very deadly and destructive.
If the threat of a hurricane is heading your way - if chance of rising water - get the heck out of there.
