I saw a piece on how the shortage of computer chips was crippling the auto industry, and even forcing some manufacturers to destroy their partially assembled products. What the hell is going on? Seems to me that we do, or did, have the "technology" to build a fucking automobile that doesn't require dependence on a damned computer.

Cars have used microchips for the last 50 years so I’d say no. Most companies have underdeveloped supply chains. They love investing in S&OP processes but rarely think about long lead components as a sales limiter. Wrong.

pretty sure the chips come from overseas, we could just make them here ourselves right?
this is all above my pay grade

I believe that Intel is trying to build a new plant to produce chips that will be located in the U.S. I don't know if that is still in the works. But computer chips are just one item that the U.S. doesn't produce enough of - like a lot of other things. Remember all the drugs we have to rely upon China to deliver. Write and ask Biden how the effort is going on to bring back production to the U.S.
And autos are scarce. I was looking to buy a new car when the Pandemic hit. I am still looking. Two things currently - almost no new cars available and the price has gone up.

The prices are outrageous. used trucks especially.....

I saw where used cars have increased over 30% and new cars have increase by 7%. The autos I have been looking at are going for MSRP. But I cannot find an auto that is the color my wife wants. I would buy one if I could.

Just like the housing market. Homes are worth 30-40% more than the buyer paid, however, selling only means your going to pay 30-40% higher for your next home.

You will just have to rent until the housing market collapses again. And it's going to.

Which is exactly why I won't sell the truck, nor my house, which is paid for. I can't keep the sumbishes from bugging me about selling my house, 4 blocks from the beach. Hell, I am retiring RIGHT HERE! Leave me alone! Quit calling, and quit texting! Unless, of course, you want to offer me triple the market value!

However, housing inventory has been underbuilt for the past 20 years so part of this boom is a S/D correction. Up north there have been persistent low inventory issues so that’s likely to continue after this current boom. But I’m sure there’s some areas where people put 5% down that will have their equity wiped out when the demand drops off.

My boss bought his wife a Lexus SUV 2 years ago. Dealership called and said they would buy it back from him right now for exactly what he paid for it. Not a good time for a Florida boy wanting to fit in with the Georgia rednecks to want to buy a truck....

If my wife didn’t commute daily, we would have sold her hybrid Lexus. It’s crazy what they are paying for them even at wholesale.

Going to be at least a year to year and a half before chip production/supply returns to normal

Exactly. That’s why we didn’t sell. If she wasn’t commuting daily, we could exist on 1 car pretty easily. I am looking for a new vehicle at some point. My outback is getting pretty crowded with three dogs and my hunting gear but it’ll be fine for this season. Drove the new 4Runner but was pretty disappointed. May just end up with a GX or a truck+ daily driver. But either way, I’m not willing to pay a premium for a car so I’ll wait out the supply crunch.

We've been looking at the 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy but 2 dealers showed the model we wanted to look at in stock but when we arrived they didn't have it. They did have another trim package, the Limited package but it had a $5,500 markup labeled as "Popular Model" and we walked away. We'll look again next Summer but the 2017 Camry is still running strong so we will wait it out.

Wow. That’s quite a markup, can’t blame you for walking.

I believe these chips are made in Taiwan, so hang on China will make them even harder to get soon.

Depends on what foundry they are buying from: there’s a few in the USA, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. But yes, diversification is definitely needed.
