I just watched the film, Schumacher on Netflix. A very well done documentary on the career of seven time Formula One Champion Michael Schumacher. From his start as a middle class kid in a sport dominated by rich kids to his retirement, the film is well done with a great deal of interaction with greats like Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and Sebastian Vettel as well as Jean Todt and Ross Brawn. I consider him the greatest automobile racer of all time, having taken an average Beneton to two world titles and brought Ferrari back from a twenty year drought to 5 consecutive world championships from 2000-2004. He won races with non competitive Ferraris. His wife Corrine gave permission for the film and has a significant part of the documentary. Make sure you put on closed caption because there is quite a bit of German, French and Italian spoken as well as heavily accented English. A very moving program. If you like motor racing of any type, am sure you will enjoy this. But even it not, if you like sports and the individual greats of any sport, you will enjoy it. It does not hide his warts and some of his early years controversial acts. It does show his commitment to excellence, his love of his family, his racing team. It is no wonder that the Tifosi (Ferrari fans) around the world love him. Since his retirement, only Kimi Raikkoenen in 2007 has won a world title and currently the Scuderia is not very competitive.

Some will argue that a race car driver isn't an athlete, however they spend a bunch of time in the gym trying to get ready to go through 6g lateral loads in turns. You have to be in excellent physical shape to tolerate that. I like both F-1 and IndyCar racing, they look similar but are quite different in performance.

I think it once was true that they were less athletes than they have been for the past 30 or so years. Schumi is a fantastic athlete as are a lot of the others. F1 is boring when there is only one dominant team. Finally, this year Red Bull and to a degree McLaren is now challenging Mercedes. Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso are great drivers. But they also won their world championships when they had the totally dominant car. Schumi won with a Benneton that was clearly not equal to the McLaren and when Michael went to Ferrari, they were a disaster. He did not win a world title with them until his 5th year, but he was almost immediately competitive with a car that was very bad. Williams and McLaren were clearly far better.

I saw this on Netflix and plan to watch it this week. I often think about him and wonder how he is doing since his tragic wreck, thanks for the review Bob!

You don't really find out how he is doing. Clearly he is alive but sounds like maybe coma or maybe awake but in a deteriorated state. You can see the sadness in the eyes of Corine and from his kids, especially Mick. Mick btw, is now in F1, but with the worst team on the planet.

I saw a story that featured an update from his wife last year. It implied he can't talk or walk and she cares for him and he is with his family who love him.
