LSU's baseball is hitting the transfer portal to booster the lineup for the 2023 season:
The rich get richer as Jay Johnson and LSU pulled off a significant coup on Friday, with NC State transfer Tommy White and Vanderbilt pitcher Christian Little both committing to the Tigers in a 10 minute span. Both additions come via reports from D1 Baseball's Kendall Rogers.
Johnson, who has been hard at work looking to build this roster through portal additions in recent weeks, just picked up two of the hottest names in the portal with White and Little now set to join the program. Both have first round talent and will join a 2023 nucleus in Baton Rouge that includes Dylan Crews, Tre Morgan and Josh Pearson.
To say these are significant additions would be an understatement as LSU has been in the market for starting caliber pitching, which Little provides, as well as a slugger of epic proportion, which is what White proved to be at NC State in 2022.
White batted .362 for the Wolfpack in 2022 to go along with 27 home runs and 74 RBI, with a slugging percentage of .757 in his first collegiate season. The good news for the Tigers is that White will have two years of eligibility before he can enter the MLB draft, filling a game changing bat that was left behind by likely first round pick Jacob Berry.
White spent most of the season as a designated hitter, starting 13 games at first base and eight at third base. It’s believed a primary reason for his transfer was so that he can now play in the field, which is something that was no doubt a discussion point with Johnson.
As for Little, he appeared in 18 games as a sophomore for the Commodores with a 3.72 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched. He began the 2022 season as a starter but quickly shifted to a bullpen role. He’ll now have an opportunity to come in and compete for a weekend starter role with the Tigers with plenty of uncertainty surrounding the pitching staff.
“We’ll be prepared for just about anything. I think there’s a couple of positions we really have to pay attention to where we can’t be short,” Johnson said in a recent media interview. “We have good plans for that and when you look at the possibilities out there, there are certain guys we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to get them here.
“It’s important to be balanced with what you’re doing, figuring out what you need and how to use it. It’s there and we want to use it as a positive for LSU and I think being thoughtful with how you use it (transfer portal) is really important.”
In addition to White and Little, the Tigers have also secured commitments from Creighton right handed pitcher Dylan Tebrake and Baylor shortstop Jack Pineda.
This is a huge day for the future of LSU baseball and reaffirms that Johnson is one of the best recruiters out there.

Ole Miss had all the answers tonight. They defeated the Sooners 10 to 3. Highlight was in the 8th inning ahead 4 to 2. They went back to back to back dingers. Two run shot and two singles. Had to go back to 1998 when LSU hit three homers in a row at Rosenblatt.
Now can the Rebels wrap it up tomorrow afternoon.

Oklahoma had taken a 2 to 1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning. And the wheels came off for the Sooners. Two wild pitches allowed two runs to score after Ole Miss had tied it up at 2.
Johnson the Ole Miss reliever came in and struck out the side in the 9th. He was throwing smoke at the Sooner batters.
As Tony stated above, not only did they not win the conference, they were one of the last teams into the NCAA playoffs. And didn't win a SEC tourney game. Sweated out the invite and then took to the road and made it all the way. First CWS title for the rebs, last year it was Miss St. and their first ever CWS.
Raleigh Rebel must be proud. I can remember talking college baseball with him in the CBS Sports days.
I am proud for Mike Bianco. An ole Tiger catcher from the Skip Bertman era.

Wes Johnson Named LSU Baseball Pitching Coach June 27, 2022
BATON ROUGE, La. – Wes Johnson, the pitching coach of the American League Central Division-leading Minnesota Twins, has been hired as pitching coach at LSU, coach Jay Johnson announced Monday.
Wes Johnson will begin his tenure at LSU later this week after coaching the Twins in their five-game series against the Cleveland Guardians. His hiring is effective upon the completion of LSU’s background check process and approval by the university’s Board of Supervisors.
“I couldn’t be more excited to announce Wes Johnson as our pitching coach at LSU,” Jay Johnson said. “We have hired, in my opinion, the best pitching coach in the country at any level. The success he has had at the highest level of baseball speaks to Wes’ ability to communicate, teach, develop and motivate. Our current and future pitchers have a coach in Wes that will get the best out of them and help them develop into one of the best pitching staffs in college baseball on an annual basis.
“I believe Wes will help us recruit and develop a large number of future Major League pitchers at LSU and form them into a dominant staff for years to come. This is a huge day for LSU Baseball.”
Wes Johnson, a native of Sherwood, Ark., had worked as a collegiate pitching coach since 2008 – including SEC stints at Mississippi State and Arkansas – before joining the Twins and becoming the first pitching coach in MLB history to make the move directly from the college ranks to the big leagues.
His first Twins staff in 2019 set a club record with 1,463 strikeouts, and he helped lead the team to back-to-back AL Central Division titles in 2019 and 2020. The 2020 Twins staff established a club record for strikeouts-per-nine-innings-pitched (9.38).
Johnson coached Minnesota right-hander Kenta Maeda to a 2.70 ERA and a 6-1 record in 2020, earning him a runner-up finish in AL Cy Young Award balloting.
Great news for Tiger fans, IMO.

Another great day for Tiger baseball.
LSU landed a verbal commitment from former UCLA pitcher Thatcher Hurd, The Advocate confirmed Wednesday, the latest in a series of splashy offseason pickups for Jay Johnson and the Tigers.
Hurd, a freshman right-hander, was the top-ranked pitcher in the state of California and the No. 9 right-handed pitcher in the Class of 2022. He held a 1.06 ERA through 34 innings this year before a stress fracture in his lower back ended his freshman season.
The freshman made nine appearances, starting six of them, then entered the transfer portal June 9.
Hurd is the latest in a series of head-turning additions to the LSU roster, which was in need of more infield defense and more pop in the lineup. The Tigers are sure to lose star hitters Cade Doughty and Jacob Berry to next month's Major League Baseball draft.
But pitching is the Tigers' greatest area of need.

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. Johnson attributed his team's exit from the Hattiesburg regional to a lack of starting pitching, and for much of the season, LSU struggled to find more than one dependable starter in its rotation. Ma'Khail Hilliard, who started Friday nights, just completed his fifth season.
Ty Floyd, who started 10 of his 16 appearances this year, is draft-eligible. Blake Money, who started 12 games, and Sam Dutton, who started 11 games, are not draft-eligible.
Hurd is the third potential starting pitcher to join LSU this summer via the transfer portal. Johnson had already added Creighton right-hander Dylan Tebrake, a two-time Big East Pitcher of the Year, and Vanderbilt right-hander Christian Little, who had a 3.72 ERA in 38⅔ innings this season, mostly as a reliever.
Johnson also pulled off a stunner earlier this week in hiring Minnesota Twins pitching coach Wes Johnson to handle the Tigers' staff.
Since its season ended June 6, LSU has also added former N.C. State slugger Tommy White, who set an NCAA freshman record with 27 home runs this spring; former Baylor middle infielder Jack Pineda, who hit .300 this season; and former Vanderbilt shortstop Carter Young, a switch hitter who struggled at the plate this year (.207) but was a three-year starter for the Commodores.
Things look good for the 2023 Tiger baseball team.

From Dandy Don's website:
"Turning to baseball, coach Jay Johnson received some good news yesterday from signee Paxton Kling of Pennsylvania. “I have decided to take my name out of the 2022 MLB Draft and further my career at Louisiana State University,” wrote the reigning Pennsylvania Player of the Year. “I am excited to be a Tiger and help compete for a National Championship.”
Kling, widely considered a Top 150 draft prospect and projected as high as No. 51 per The Athletic, is an excellent outfielder and one of the best bats in LSU’s signing class. He hit .585 this spring with four home runs and 33 stolen bases.
Coach Johnson will hope to sway several other draft-eligible prospects from his No. 1 ranked signing class to come to Baton Rouge, and really if he gets just half of them to do so, it would be an outstanding class. We’ll give you our thoughts on which signees and draft-eligible Tigers to watch for in a subsequent post. The draft gets underway Sunday, the 17th, and runs through Tuesday, the 19th."
Tigers are still loading up and getting ready for next season.

Another pitcher for the Tigers. LSU baseball lands another big name pitcher out of the transfer portal - From The Advocate - BY LEAH VANN | STAFF WRITER JUL 28, 2022 - 8:52 PM.
"Air Force Academy right-handed pitcher and catcher Paul Skenes has committed to play for LSU.
The rising junior entered the transfer portal on June 7, the sophomore first-team All-American held a 2.73 ERA through 85 2/3 innings pitched this year with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.2.
At the plate, he hit .314 this year with 13 home runs and 10 doubles.
Skenes joins a hefty staff LSU has already landed out of the transfer portal, including Thatcher Hurd (UCLA) and Christian Little (Vanderbilt)."

From Dandy Don's website:
"Pitching was the team’s biggest deficit last season, and we’ve already written a lot about the boost LSU will get from Division 1 transfers Paul Skenes (Air Force), Thatcher Hurd (UCLA) and Christian Little (Vanderbilt). One guy we failed to mention is southpaw Nate Ackenhausen, who came in at No. 24 on D1Baseball.com’s Top 50 JUCO Transfers list for the 2023 season. According to a press release issued yesterday, Ackenhausen is expected to play a prominent role in the Tigers’ bullpen this season. The native of Owasso, Okla., transferred to LSU from Eastern Oklahoma State after posting an 8-1 record in 2022 with a 1.84 ERA, 14 walks and 89 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. I’d say he’s yet another reason to think this year’s team could be more complete than any in recent years.
The 2023 Tigers will hold their first full-squad practice on Friday, January 27, and LSU opens its season on Friday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m. CT versus Western Michigan in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. Thirty-six days and counting!"
Thirty six days until college baseball. Chomping at the bit waiting for opening day.

From Dandy Don's website:
"LSU Baseball Countdown to Game Day: 34 Days
No. 34 RHP Chase Shores
We’ve written about the trio of veteran pitchers LSU brought in through the transfer portal — Paul Skenes, Thatcher Hurd and Christian Little — and about JUCO transfer standout Nate Ackenhausen. But LSU also brought in several big-time arms from the high school ranks, including right-hander Chase Shores of Midland, Texas. Shores is an imposing figure at 6-foot-8, 240 pounds and was rated as Perfect Game’s No. 1 RHP in Texas and No. 5 RHP in the nation. According to PG, Shores has a fastball that touches 97 mph with sinking action, as well as a good changeup and breaking ball.
This past fall, Shores threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no walks on one strikeout, against UL-L in an exhibition scrimmage. He followed that up by starting in LSU’s fall Purple and Gold World Series and working another two scoreless innings with one hit with two strikeouts. Look for Shores to have a prominent role in this year’s pitching staff, possibly as a midweek starter or closer."
