I will agree that when I first watched the video it looked from the angle that the ship may be too high and hit the bridge, but I would imagine they have it down to the exact foot above water level they can be at and each ship is probably measured digitally before leaving the dock.

On a side note.... all the fear about how this will impact the country.... it worries me that terroist will look at new targets now.. like other bridges (Golden Gate) that impact harbors.... I took for granted that big Harbors like that one would have multiple ways in and out or set up for this kind of issue were a entry was closed.... but they are talking like this could set the economy in a "free fall" and prices soaring for years.... etc.... it shouldn't be that easy to effect things so drastically.... i hope they are addressing that at the gov levels now on all major ports before something/accident happens...

The Glen Canyon Dam is a huge weak point in our infrastructure. If that dam was taken out it would take out every other dam all the way to the gulf of California and would cripple power generation and agricultural production in the southwest. Forget about what it would do to the Vegas and Phoenix water supplies.

Someone could fly an airplane into a dam, especially a large one like the Glen Canyon or Hoover dams.

Someone could fly an airplane into a dam, especially a large one like the Glen Canyon or Hoover dams. in theory it would take a very big plane... like in 9/11.... i doubt a single engine would do much.... but hope fully i'm right.... the more i hear about these ships.. the more my brain won't sleep on the idea of how unstoppable these things are speed, the mass, the weight... and the low numbers of staff on board... you could hijack one, speed it up and there is no way to stop one.. and sinking it out desperation would do as much damage since it would block ports and shut things down all the same..... i hope this is a wake up call for a possibly vuranable area in our nations transportation and economy...

The Captain had no control of the ship before the accident. Other Captains have had similar event's with their ships control system only they were out to sea when that happened. They said that there was nothing the Captain could do other that make a hasty report as to what was about to happen. It's most definitely a tragedy but the Captains action helped prevent an even larger tragedy. I feel sorry for that Captain standing on the bridge knowing what was about to happen and there was nothing he could do to prevent it.

At least 2 previous incidents with the ship. One in Chile and one I believe last year in Belgium. No idea if the same captain/crew.

That and what tides allow you room under, timing your passage under a bridge depends on drawbridge times and tide times.
