memphis.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=930002The John Calipari era is over at the University of Memphis. Apparently, Calipari could not resist the lure of what he calls 'the Notre Dame of college basketball.' He has rejected the counteroffer from Memphis and will sign on and be introduced as the new Wildcats' head coach as soon as late this afternoon. The contract is rumored to be worth about $40 million over six years, an NCAA-record $6.67 million per anum. R. C. Johnson has received permission to speak to Missouri's Mike Anderson about the Tigers' coaching vacancy.

Wow....though Cal was smarter than that.
He'd better reach the Final Four this year or UK fans will turn on him like rabid pitt bulls....saying "All that money, and no title....FIRE HIM.....Billy D is a done deal to replace Cal anyways!" ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yes, it's a ridiculous amount of money...I do believe that it makes him the highest paid coach in sports...unreal. Cal is a good coach and all but this is a bit much by the big yuck (UK friend told me that folks call Kentucky the big Yuck.)

Nah,
Phil Jackson is making $8M with a $12M option for next year. However, that would make him the highest paid college coach.

The news on Calipari going to Kentucky is not surprising, Calipari needs to feed both his pocket book and his ego. Kentucky fans are at the point where they wan o win NOW and ddo care care about the cost (see Indiana fans when they hired Kelvin Sampson). I do not see this ending well for Calipari, just a hunch.
I'd like to comment on this. Why would Missouri's coach want to go to Memphis. Listen I know Calipari did well there but personally I have always questioned Calipari's recruiting methods (see Bobby Huggins at KSU as an example of what I am saying) but that is another discussion. Aside from teh Calipari era isn't Memphis a step down as a job from Missouri? Isn't a bball scool like Missouri that plays in the Big XII a better job than a Conference USA job. These are legit questions, I know a little CBB and my impression is this is at BEST a lateral move with the possibility of a step down for a guy that is heading a Missouri program that is definitely on the rise.

Didn't know for sure, so I looked it up.... there's apparantly no such thing as a "step down" from Missouri.

What did Huggins do at Kansas State? You talking about the hiring of Beasley's AAU Coach?

He didn't do anything . However, KSU was the dregs of college basketball before Huggins got there, all of a sudden, after being in coaching exile for over a year, he is able to bring in the #1 overall recruit in the entire country, that is one heck of a recruiter . So I'm not "saying" anything I'm just saying Calipari seems to have similar recruiting techniques as Huggins

I heard that Phil Jackson is contemplating retiring after this year... Yeah....I heard yesterday that he was thinking about that as well due to some health reasons, but the allure of $12M could tempt him to do it another year, especially if he doesn't get ring number 10 this year.

I totally agree. If the Lakers don't win it all this year, the chance at one more run at 10 rings and a $12M pay day...

Holy shit that is a lot of money. Calipari is a good coach, but this smacks of desperation from UK.

I don't know about anybody else, but if I made 40 million in 6 years I would personally consider myself successful. And with money like that the babes would be lined up at the door to give me some loving. ;D

As a fan of UK basketball I have to question this move. Calipari is a good coach and recruiter...with a history of questions. After the last death sentence (see bama football, or awburn for that matter) why would they go after a guy with that many questions. Travis Ford would have been a better fit IMO.

I don't see UK as a step up in terms of winning national championships, but you can't deny that kind of money.
He has a lot of great recruits coming into Memphis (so I hear), I wonder if he takes any of them to UK.

If the recruit signed a LOI with the school, I think it is up to the school as to whether they let him out of his scholly... I could be wrong. KSU wouldn't let Beasley out of his scholly to come to WVU and play for Huggy for one year. I think Beasley would have liked Motown...

Beasley never asked to be let out of his commitment to KSU (God I wish he had). K-State hired Frank Martin specifically with the idea that he would retain Dalonte Hill, who was the main reason that Beasley chose KSU to begin with.

He has a lot of great recruits coming into Memphis (so I hear), I wonder if he takes any of them to UK. Its not about the National Championships at this point. He will have as good of a chance if not better at Kentucky... its about become a legend. If he continues to dominate in Conference USA, he'll be considered great, but why didn't he go to a major program that plays teams throughout the year. At Kentucky, he is going to the school with one of the top 3 history in the sport, if not the top (hard to argue against UCLA). This will give him the opportunity to be named with the likes of Roy Williams, Dean Smith, Coach K... if he is successful there. I personally think this is a great fit and am very happy about it. Brings some talent back to the SEC and may very well help UT and others in the SEC. Congrats to Bama on a great hire too!!!
