I got this in the email yesterday. I checked with Snopes but couldn't find out anything definitive:
Hello, folks! Just a little FYI for my friends. The new super speeder laws have gone into effect in our great state and now the fines for speeding are atrocious. Thank God I do not know this from personal experience but one of my buddy's coworker got burned this weekend. When I heard about the super speeder law, I was thinking "oh, that's the folks on the interstate going 100 or more, not me." Well this person was in Atlanta on I-75. The speed limit had been 65 for a while; she was going 80 and said she was going with the flow of traffic. (makes sense) She got stopped because she didn't notice that the speed limit had changed to 55. (ouch - she says the flow of traffic never slowed down - and for those of us who have driven much in ATL, we know exactly what she means) So she was going 25 miles over the limit and guess what her fine is...$800.00
She went to talk with a lawyer and has talked to the police department and is finding no compromise anywhere. The police actually told her that the cop was lenient and could have taken her to jail! Word from the police also is that the law will become even more tight on July 1.
Just a little heads up for my fellow travelers! An $800 fine for going 80 on the interstate is a possibility for lots of folks. I travel it lots and 80+ is a pretty common speed of travel for many cars. I guess lesson here is to make sure to pay attention to those changing speed limits!!!.

I guess by "super speeder" laws, they just mean super jacked-up fines.
I lived in Atlanta for 5 years, and that story sounds par for the course up there. The flow of traffic goes 80+, and the cops go on a fishing expedition picking off whoever happens to be easiest to pull over. They never went after the hard-core speeders who happened to be weaving in and out of the car-pool lane. They plain pick out people by random from the bunch and write the ticket.

That lady could always.....you know....not go 25mph over the speed limit.

That lady could always.....you know....not go 25mph over the speed limit. Just like those terrorists who are getting water boarded could not have been, like, terrorists. I guess the point of this story is: does the punishment fit the crime?

I never thought I would say this...I agree with dpb... Many people don't know it but in many states(like here in NC) fines can be doubled or tripled if it's in a designated work area. Ignorance of a speed limit change with posted signs is no defense...I tried it several years ago.

Damn hypocrits. Let's blow the pirates out of the water, let's fry everybody on death row, and let's shoot every prisoner at Gitmo, but, "LET THE SPEEDERS GO" !!! NEVER MIND THAT THEY CAN KILL SOMEONE, JUST LIKE THE REAL CRIMINALS!!!

I don't give a shit how fast traffic is moving, I don't think I've ever been going 25 over the speed limit. She broke the law...could have gotten a ticket for reckless driving (over 15 mph above the speed limit) and could have gone to jail. I don't know about Georgia but in SC reckless driving can easily pull in a 1500 dollar fine as well as jail time. I can't stand people who think it's egregious when cops enforce the laws. Go within a reasonable amount of the speed limit and this won't happen.

If I-75 is that loop around Atlanta then I had my foot off the gas one time and was being drafted at about 85!!!

Generally, I travel within 5 mph of the speed limit on the interstates, because I've blown a tire at 75 mph before, and I know how quickly shit can go bad out of nowhere when you're moving that fast. I also agree that speeders should expect tickets. But really, there is an argument in defense of this lady, and it is specific to Atlanta traffic. If you've never driven there, then you don't understand the situation. Their five-lane interstates are always either at a complete stop like a parking lot (during morning and afternoon commutes) or they are FLYING (at all other times). To try and obey the speed limit when Atlanta traffic is moving is actually more dangerous than driving slower. You have to go with the flow. It is actually more reckless not to. Jussayin

So, I guess we shouldn't punish the Somali pirates, since everybody's doing it.

$800. Not nearly enough. The Perimeter highway around ATL is full of idiots. Only problem we need to have more fined like this.
Having driven half my life on the autobahn, I know something about speed. The problem in Atlanta is that you have one car doing 50 and another doing 90. Turn signals seem to be optional equipment for too many drivers on 285.
There used to be laws that slower traffic stayed right and faster traffic passed ONLY on the left. That has been forgotten and contributes to a lot of the accidents around the ATL.
So, $800.....I would have raised the fine once she appealed.

So, I guess we shouldn't punish the Somali pirates, since everybody's doing it. If that was in reply to what I just said, then you missed my point. I'm not saying that it's OK to speed because everyone is speeding. I'm saying that IN ATLANTA, the traffic moves so crazily and so quickly that to try and drive 55 or 65 is actually more dangerous than going with the flow. I've seen it. I've done it. I drove 80+ with everyone else in order to avoid CAUSING an accident. I'm not sure how that translates to the Somali pirates, but to answer your question, I'm all for blowing those pricks right out of the water as they approach their target ships.

Just like those terrorists who are getting water boarded could not have been, like, terrorists. I guess the point of this story is: does the punishment fit the crime? Seriously? Really? Seriously yes. The argument of the law breaking is irrelevant in both cases. The only debate is the severity of the penalty.

Seriously yes. The argument of the law breaking is irrelevant in both cases. The only debate is the severity of the penalty. Ok. I'm going to try this slowly. One is an example of someone getting caught breaking the law and being punished with a fine for it. The other is an example of someone maybe possibly planning on breaking the law, and illegal means being used to find out if they did or not. If you don't see the difference you have big problems.

BTW, am I reading you properly? Are you saying that torture was punishment for a crime? If so then now I know that every single last person who authorized it belongs in jail. All these excuses about how it saved LA are bunk. Torture was not used to gain info, it was used as punishment. Thank you.

That's one of the nice things about the newer GPS systems. They show you on the screen what the speed limit is and how fast you are driving. That's why I have my GPS right next to my top notch radar detector.

Rule 1 though. Never be the lead car. Radar detectors are useless if you get hit with a laser and you're out front.

So, I guess we shouldn't punish the Somali pirates, since everybody's doing it. Technically.... the remaining "Pirate" that attacked the USS Alabama. It is no longer plural after the rescue. The other 3 have been tendered their punishment.

She could have bought a top notch radar detector for half that price. Once upon a time during my mispent youth as an Avionics Tech in the USMC a friend of mine and I built a device that would recieve a radar signal, boost it several times and then send it flying back to its source, which would fry. We were golden until one day on a road in Texas we were the only ones around. The cop figured something was up and pulled us over and serached the car. He was pissed.

That's the problem with Texas highways. You're often all alone. It's a double edged sword because you really want to speed. I'm not advocating speeding but one of our vehicles is easy to speed in if you aren't paying attention. It's always good to have a radar detector in vehicles like this.
