2 more (smallish) fires here yesterday and a huge one down by my old house in Big Bear (Southern California). The 7th bear this summer was captured down here in Reno and returned to the mountains. We are in a severe drought. I say bring it on. Also, remember, just because it snows up there (Sierras) doesn't mean anything down here. Some rain, temps in the 60s (lows in the 40s) for us. I can live with that.
Plus, hard to ride without snow. ;D

We were just up at Lake Arrowhead working at a shop and the shop owner turned us on to a shop owner in Big Bear we were supposed to negotiate with this week, but they're not letting anyone in because of the fire. Hope the place doesn't burn down.

Sad, the City of Big Bear Lake (south shore) was never really threatened. The fire was all west of the dam or north of the lake. Fawnskin was evacuated (still is I believe) and the fire got close but is now mostly burning northward towards Lucerne Valley.
Out of curiousity-what store?

It's a new place you probably wouldn't have heard of, it's called "ReJoyce". It's a high-end boutique owned by a woman named Joyce. Imagine that. She just bought the place, I think it used to be called something like The Gray Squirrel or something like that.
I don't know how close the fire was getting to town, but it was in a position that they cut off all incoming traffic on 18, which pretty much makes it a no fly zone for my purposes.

It's supposed to get a lot colder here the next few days, but we're only about 2,500 feet up, so no snow. The wind today is gusting over 40 mph, around 30 sustained. Miserable to be outside with the dust and crap in the air.

They're saying it's supposed to come down to 5,500 here this weekend, so I can imagine how low it'll come down up there. I wonder if they're be enough sticking around to allow an early ski season opening. I'd love for Heavenly to open up now that I can get free rooms 100 yards from the gondola and I don't even have to use my timeshare.

DPB-
My sister and her husband lived in Truckee for 3 years before moving to Denver. Lived about 5 or so miles from Donner Pass. Awesome area.
I learned how to snowboard out there, instead of learning on the east coast (benefit is learning on snow rather than ice, though riding on ice makes you able to ride on near anything). Love the riding up there, except, oddly, Mt. Rose. That just seemed too much a skiers mountain.
Sugarbowl, Northstar (for the parks), and obviously Heavenly were my picks. I wish it snowed out here like it did out there..

If you're a boarder, you'd probably really like Mt. High out here. They have night skiing up until 10 p.m. and you can see it from my bedroom window at night with all the lights. When I first moved out here I couldn't figure out what the hell the lights were, the look much closer than they are. With all the secret Plant 42/Skunkworks/Edwards AFB stuff, strings of lights in the sky like that could be just about anything.

Lose the humidity out here, eddie, and might get fluffier. The snow in Montana is known as "Cold Smoke" due to its consistancy. You could take a handful of snow and wouldn't be able to make a snowball because of the dryness. Youcould take that same handful and blow on it and it woud "poof" kinda like a dandelion when blown on. It just fills the air as it falls. About four or so Winter's ago, Bridger Bowl got like an 84" dumping from an early Winter storm and was one of the premiere weeks of all time. Some lifts couldn't operate until they cleared below the lift run, as snow was above where your feet would hang if riding up the mountain. People had hard times finding their skis if the bindings released because the would be so buried in this fine, fine snow. But, imagine linking some turns as that shit just flew out behind you like a rooster tail. There was nothing but smiles on faces of those that could handle the conditions. I wasn't, at least on that level. Give me no more then two feet of fresh, and could probably hold my own, just wasn't familiar with the technique to be able to accomplish it.
Just thought I would put a picture in your mind and get yopu psyched. Hopefully mission accomplished. I'm sure some of those resorts around Lake Tahoe gets some monumental "dumpings", just have to believe those Pacific storms are more moisture laden and not near as light as some of those inner mountain dumpings Montana, Wyoming and Utah get. Don't know for sure, just a hunch.

Goose, isn't there a mountain in WV called Silver Springs. Silver "somethng". How is it? Since I move back here, East, I haven't skied and really do not care for Beech or Sugar Mountaim locally, unless there is some natural snow. Yeah, I go t spoiled out West, though I will take what I can get.

I heard all about Montana from my uncle.
Sierra snow is wet and heavy, but fun nonetheless because they get 102597 feet per year. Colorado has nice powder, but I hear the best is Big Sky and Utah. I'm making a trip out to Utah this winter. Big Sky is sometime in the future, because well.. I like to party, and I haven't heard too much about resorts/bars/etc up in Montana.. I have some friends in Provo and Salt Lake right now that I plan on crashing and using their women.
Of course everything is better than what I have in Jersey. Ice. And more Ice. It provides for some ridiculous riding as far as speeds are concerned, though, but hardly safe, Very monotonous.

There's a place called Seven Springs... It's in Pennsylvania (about an hour north of Morgantown)... that's the best place around me to board... Wisp in Deep Creek, MD is the most popular one around Morgantown.. It's only 45 minutes away and is cheap. The radio station I work for gets me a season pass to Wisp so I usually go there...

Funny you should mention the ice... the first time my parents took me skiing, I was 6 years old and fell face first on a patch of ice and broke my nose.. I didn't go skiing again until I was 14... then I discovered snowboarding and I've loved it ever since...
