I was thinking to myself today what a remarkable community has been created here at the SCM. It's funny because how can you consider people you've never met your friends?
But I want to say thanks to Sad and the other mods for nurturing and policing this place into the community it is and the virtual family it is turning into. Hell, as we are currently, we have sibling squabbles (WER and kaara), divorces (all the TBDPITL defectors) and uncles that don't speak to one another (dpb and zach). We've even got the crazy uncle who always gets drunk at the party and ends up with a lampshade on his head (davidm).
I've been around since the time Sadovin was smog on cbssportsline and thru the aborted attempts at boards like the original CfbParadise and others. Calvin Coolidge has a great quote about persistence that I think applies to Sad and his repeated attempts to build an online message board where mostly reasonable and mostly intelligent people can come and go as they please, talk cfb or anything else and not worry about trolls, ganging up and all the other primitive and antisocial behavior that's made internet communication worthless in most places.
So hats off to you Sad for your persistence and patience. Thanks, man. +1

What prompted this was a conversation I had with redstick who has done really nice and generous things totally unprompted, as you might for an old bud, expecting nothing in return.
Then I thought of Washalum packing up his fam to catch a game MF97 was playing halfway across the country.
I even thought of my brother-in-law, whom I've known for over a decade, and we've talked sports endlessly since day one. But the SCM has given us a chance to discuss and debate so much more often over the years. I know him better as a result of this place.
Really a remarkable thing to me.

A most appropriate thread. I can remember when NCBD asked me to come over as did Sad while I was still at CBS. I have thoroughly enjoyed this site and the discussions. It proves that folks can be passionate about this great sport without being total assholes ala a whole bunch of folks over at CBS.
+1 to DD (Sorry dpb, just had to.... ;D

Oh, and one more thing - you already got your 4,000 in free karma. Stop sucking up for more. First off, it was 5000 and second, it wasn't Sad who granted that windfall and third, have you seen how much karma some of these dudes are racking up? If I don't cheat and/or beg for another windfall my karma dominance will disappear! Can't have that, now can we? Get yer facts straight, bub! Seriously, dp, not looking for karma, just musing to myself and thought it was worth sharing. Oh, and I thought uncles were better than sisters, which was my first inclination. ;D

I know Deac, I'm just giving you shit. I have had the fortune of meeting several board members -you guys in DC, the Jax gang (sadly minus the lovely AUGirl), bil, Sad, RenoSooner who is sadly among the missing. I have seen firsthand the generosity of the board for the last 3 years when it MS150 time has come. I have used the board as an outlet when I'm pissed, and to cheer me up when I'm down. So, yeah....thanks everybody. Even you Zach.

That's exactly why it gets more like a family of sorts all the time. Its to the point where some guys can just laugh and kid about how different they are. Sort of accept people as members, perceived warts and all.

Erock, you have to admit, that place was never as welcoming to newbies nor as open minded as this place. I remember posting over there and getting ignored or ganged up on. My whole point is, he lost control of that board and others but instead of giving up, he was persistent enough to keep at it until he was able to build the online community that he envisioned. That's the persistence I wasa talking about. I'm glad he stuck with it

It's funny that when Deac and I get together, just this last weekend, we discuss topics of the board, like we had just been with everyone at a some social function or something. Never thought when I joined that it be quite that friendly and familiar.

Great thread DD, and I agree wholeheartedly. The message board format makes it very easy for people to become assholes on a scale they wouldn't normally be in real life, and I generally don't see that here. Debates may get heated sometimes, but the members here are good enough to simply accept one anothers' differing opinions. I know for me, all it takes is 30 seconds on a site like CBS to remember why this is the best forum I know of.

Garsh y'all, I'm all tearin' up.
Seriously though, thanks for this thread, DD. It's difficult, and frequently unpopular, to play the policeman, and it really, really helps when someone not in that role reminds us all of the net effect of those efforts.
The credit should not be just mine, not even primarily mine, I just try to nudge things in a direction and let them go where the will. The other mods and administrators, both past and present, have generally done a great job of policing the place when it gets too heated, and in providing new topics when things get too slow. Redstick has provided features on the board, particularly at the start, that we all take for granted at this point and most probably can't even remember when we didn't have them.
That being said, everyone here can help with the nature of the place whether they're a moderator or not. Just as this thread provides a reminder that people really do want a place like SCM, when you see a couple people going at it and letting things get personal, any person on this board can send a PM to one or both and things almost automatically cool off. The participants often only want to be heard, and contacting them by PM lets them vent off the board and helps things cool down. I've been in the situation where I've been the recipient of such PMs when I've gotten out of hand and I hope I'm not the only one people feel comfortable contacting in such situations. It really helps because it's easy to forget ourselves in an internet-type environment.
When I do something myself in the administration of the board, I always try to do it for the purpose of preserving the kind of place DD has described above, even if it's not apparent at first. I hope that none of it (or at least very, very little of it) is out of ego, but feel free to send me a PM if something does seem awry. We all remember the day when people from my old board set me off and I went so far as to ban BED and CFF -- both people I have since met and include among my friends. The driver of my actions was my desire to prevent the infected relationships from the old board from coming over here and continuing, but I lost sight of the line and crossed it when people who didn't understand the history stood opposed to what I was doing. That's a great time for calm people to PM me and many did with criticisms, suggestions and support.
So, anywho, it's the people that make the board, through the nature of their participation, their understanding, their tolerance of different points of view and their acceptance of the other members, as DD said -- warts and all.
