Charles Hanagriff TigerBait.com Columnist
There seemed to be a common theme flowing through the national and regional media after LSU beat Alabama last weekend.
LSU is lucky. LSU is so talented they are winning in spite of their coach. The coach is lucky. This can't/won't last.
My favorite? From Matt Hayes of The Sporting News, who wrote "Smart teams beat stupid teams."
The inference, of course, that Les Miles is stupid. Never mind the fact that, at 30-5, he holds a much better record than most his "academically superior" counterparts. Forget the fact that he has beaten them more times than not.
Lose sight of the fact that in nearly three years of "luck", LSU has not left the top 15 nationally. Hasn't lost in November. Hasn't lost a bowl game. Has lost only one game at home. Has lost only two games by more than six points.
But just you wait. It's going to catch up with Miles and the Tigers. Saban's players are leaving after this year.
Of course, four first-rounders left last year, and LSU seems to have survived. Never mind the fact that the last two recruiting classes were ranked in the top seven nationally. Forget that 77% of the points on the current team have been scored by Miles recruits.
Lose sight of the fact that he has hired well enough that a member of his current staff is being mentioned for the head job at Nebraska.
But just you wait. Saban will get his players in at Alabama. Woe is the rest of the league.
Never mind the fact that in his previous SEC stop he lost at least three games in a season every year except one. Forget that we heard the same thing about Urban Meyer two years ago, and the Gators recently lost three of four games in the league.
Lose sight of the fact that the four National Championship coaches, plus Tommy Tuberville, he of the 13-0 but no trophy finish, all trail the Hat by at least two games overall. Miles has a losing record against none of them.
Three months ago, the "most talented team in the history of college football" resided in Los Angeles. They're looking at the adjustable band on the Hat as well.
I guess sometimes talent isn't enough. I have no idea why anybody would think teams just win automatically.
But Miles is reckless, plus he's going to Michigan anyway. (Why would Michigan hire such a bad coach?)
LSU won't be able to replace Jimbo Fisher. (Florida State is 6-3)
LSU won't be able to replace JaMarcus Russell. (The Tigers have a better record than this time last year.)
LSU won't be able to replace Bo Pelini. (I'm fairly certain the applicant line will be out the door and around the corner if he leaves.)
And so on.
At the present moment, next season is way off in the distance, and I have no way of knowing what the future holds. Many in the media, and one in Alabama in particular, will tell you they know exactly what will happen next year.
Next November, these same people will ignore the results on the field to tell you what will happen in 2009.
Just you wait.

I guess luck is what you make it. What impressed me was the fact that LSU won the Bama game even though Flynn threw 3 interceptions, LSU had 7 times more penalties than Bama, and trailed with a little over 7 minutes left in the game. That's a lot to overcome and still beat a pretty good team.
I think the pass at the end of the Auburn game has started a lot of this. That play was either one second or one inch from being a disaster, but it wasn't. In LSU's case, the old adage seems to be true:
Fortune favors the bold.

Not like it is a national publication. Let me guess, the USC writers don't bias their writing to favor the Trojans? Come on now, perspective.
