Bethel II dismissed from football team after incident with Battle
Nigel Bethel II, a Texas Tech football player, has been dismissed from the team due to his role in an incident at the Texas Tech Student Recreation Center on Saturday. Texas Tech Athletics said in a press release that it "has a zero tolerance policy on this type of behavior."
Lady Raider star Amber Battle is expected to have surgery after she was hit in the face by Bethel at Texas Tech’s recreation center, the Avalanche-Journal has learned.
During a basketball game, Bethel, a freshman cornerback reportedly punched Battle in the face, breaking a bone, the A-J has learned.
Blayne Beal, a Tech spokesman, confirmed there was an incident between two student athletes Saturday afternoon at the recreation center. Beal said campus officials are gathering information from both parties.
Tech women’s basketball coach Candi Whitaker said she was unable to comment Saturday evening.
Following the incident, Battle posted to Twitter, “Pray for me y’all.” She later posted, “Thank y’all for the calls, texts and visits.”
From a Lubbock location Saturday evening, a Twitter account under the name Nigel Bethel II had a post that said, “Trouble always seems to find me ... ”
Tech spokesman Chris Cook said a police report was not complete as of Saturday evening as the investigation is still ongoing.
“(It) likely won’t be ready before Monday,” he said.
Battle was the Lady Raiders’ leading scorer last season, averaging 16.4 points per game. She also averaged a team-high 7.4 rebounds. She’s a 5 foot, 9 inch guard from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has one year of eligibility remaining.
Bethel is a 5-9 cornerback from Miami, Florida, Booker T. Washington High School. He signed with Tech in February and is one of the team’s more highly regarded freshmen.

Yeah, those barners are all about keeping women in line, anyhow. Like how Florida dealt with Chris Rainey? It was all a misunderstanding. Then it happend again. Suddenly, it is like ...maybe this guy has a problem.

Need to change the thread title... No such thing as TT and a highly rated player... jes sayin' To be fair, he was a 1.5 star guy. For Tx Tech, that is highly rated.

Need to change the thread title... No such thing as TT and a highly rated player... jes sayin' Well in my defense I read where it said it was one of their highest rated recruits...I just didn't realize (although I should have) that it meant he was a 3 star recruit. Also the kid went from Miami to Lubbock, they probably should have had him on suicide watch.

4-5 star kid. Turned down SEC and FSU fir TTU.,
Tech led by example in his quick dismissal.
"Wins are not more important than character and reputation of school student atheles..."
I heard Baylor, TAMU, and other SEC/ACC schools already offered him a full rude.
PS, there was a great amount if evidence to keep the kid. Video proof and otherwise to go with his self defense claim.... But TTU had none of it and pulled the trigger instantly with no moral waiver.
To bad other schools do not have the fortitude and strength to do the same...

Kudos to Texas Tech. Lots of places would have had to study the issue. Or waited until after October for more conclusive tests to be processed.

There was a lot of evidence to support the kid's story, and the celebrated move was immediate dismissal? Exactly. What the hell is that about?

Exactly. What the hell is that about? No idea, but I wish he'd post some sources. You might be asking too much. When you can spout off stuff like "I heard Baylor, TAMU, and other SEC/ACC schools already offered him a full rude"...sources aren't important.

David…How you spin something to a positive is utterly amazing to me. Guess what, Sir? When something is wrong, it is wrong. I can admit UGA has had some dumb ass players and I don't go on trying to trivialize it, or piss on some other Conference like you do. Here is the bottom-line, Texas Tech had a dumb ass player do a dumb ass thing and got caught. Everyone can spin it to fit an agenda, but once again, the bottom line he punched another Texas Tech athlete, who happens to be a female athlete, and is now no longer on the team. Piss on your rivals, piss on the SEC, but if you really want to piss on somebody piss on Louisville, as they are the ones that are taking all the "questionables"! Source: NCBD's opinon ("aggressive-passive" at it's finest... ) Oh, and add some sarcasm into this verbal gumbo!

It's not like the Rec tape mysteriously disappeared...... Or the police told the girl it would better to drop it..... I mean he did have some buddies take his side and say it epwyasnt the way it seemed...... She did throw "a punch" and/or inniate physical contact...
The difference and in how TTU handled this is that they took 24 hours to kick there #1 DB recruit possibly in history off the team.....
Other school take similar instances and do private investigations months down the rroad and then dismiss nothing.
Kudos for TTU putting character first and not compromising ethics for a football game.
You asked what TTU would do in a similar situation as to the ones I have been so vical about? Here you have it.

Just to make sure I understand the point being made, David, you did say, "recruit", right? Sounds like TT only did what UGA did with the Freshman of the Year, Isaiah Crowell, after his run in with the law. And, this, after Isaiah proved himself ON the field.
Don't get all "high and mighty" and act like what TT did is above what other schools in other Conferences do. And, again, you said "recruit", right?

Yes he us enrolled and in class now. TTU has allowed him to finish the summer semester.
Of course his coach back home said today "many schools have contacted us about bringing Bethel to their campus..... I expect him to be on the field in August fir another team".....
We'll, he might be in prison so good luck with that.... The coach would nit say "who" and I know it's pronbly just coach talk...
And TEx, yeah he punched a girl..... And Winston banged a chick.... But the circumstances are in dispute on both instances.... But only one school acted timely and ethically.

Not looking good for this young man at all....
LUBBOCK, Texas -- A former Texas Tech cornerback faces felony assault charges after he was accused of hitting one of the school's women's basketball players at the university's recreation center.
A Texas Tech Police Department offense report released Monday accuses freshman Nigel Bethel II of "causing serious bodily injury" by hitting Amber Battle on Saturday. The one-page report states the attack included "hands, fists, feet, etc."
Efforts to reach Bethel were unsuccessful. The highly regarded defensive back from Miami was released from custody pending formal charges by the Lubbock County district attorney's office.
Bethel was dismissed from the football team on Sunday.
Athletics spokesman Blayne Beal said Bethel is being allowed to complete his summer school session.
Battle led the Lady Raiders last season with 16.4 points per game.

Under no circumstance is assault legal. Stay on task. You are correct.... Too bad tech didn't lose the video evidence.... It's a shame tech actually investigated it and didn't wait a year.... And it's really a shame the police didn't inform her that Lubbock was a football town, and if she chose to persue charges there might be negative actions against her.... Assault and self defense are just as fucking close as rape and sex. But sad for the kid. I do expect the girl to be suspended a majority of the WCBB season as we'll for her roll in this which was not "an innocent".

I mean you have the Marsha Sharp freeway...and your only NC is in WBB. Maybe the fact she was the leading scorer on the WBB team had something to do with the quick decision.
