In baseball, LSU came in at No. 7 in the USA Today Preseason Poll, marking the 2022 Tigers’ fifth Top 10 appearance in a preseason poll. This year’s team’s previously released preseason rankings are No. 3 by Collegiate Baseball, No. 4 by Perfect Game, No. 8 by D1 Baseball and No. 10 by Baseball America.
LSU is one of eight Southeastern Conference teams appearing in the USA Today 2022 preseason Top 25, along with No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 3 Mississippi State, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 10 Florida, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 17 Georgia. The action gets underway on February 18 when LSU takes on Maine in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. Thirteen days and counting!
I am ready for some college baseball.

SEC - My Take - Lots of question marks with Pitching in the SEC this year
Arkansas just lost it's best pitcher for the year. They had already lost everyone else that you would know off that pitching staff. I am sure they have recruited well but they are starting completely over. I can't imagine they don't have some growing pains.
Ole Miss lost it's bets two pitchers but they can smash the ball.
Vandy? Rocker and Leiter are both gone. Sure, they have a lot of arms but all three of these teams have some serious question marks. These guys have to take a step back, right?
Florida. They probably have the best returning starting pitching of anyone in the SEC
LSU - We know they will be hitting the ball but they have questions at pitching too
Mississippi State: Lost two starters but the whole pen is back and that was the teams strength last year.
Bottom line is every top ranked SEC program has to find starting pitching. I think Mississippi State is set with it's Friday starter and it has several guys that should be ready but every program probably feels like they have a plan. It's going to be fun to watch play out.
After winning the championship last year, anything I get this year is just gravy. I am sure I will be stressed out once the season starts or they make it to the post season but for now, it's just fun to watch.

All that pitching losses are why I think Texas is setup to have a great year. They would be my pick to make a run as of right now but it's funny thing about baseball, lots of teams can get hot and make a run. It's not a just the 5 or 6 teams at the top of the recruiting rankings that can win it all.
I fully expect Mississippi State to be in the mix at the end of the year but all it takes is for a team to find that pitcher that just refuses to lose and change the landscape of everything.

From Dandy Don's website:
"Giovani DiGiacomo led off the scrimmage with a home run deep into the right field bleachers. Jacob Berry and Cade Beloso also had dingers, their first home runs of the preseason. On the pitching front, I was happy to see that Grant Fontenot from my hometown of Lafayette was consistently throwing in the lower 90s and struck out five in two hitless innings. Also, fellow freshman right-hander Cale Lansville of Centennial, Calif. was extended for four innings and struck out five while allowing one run on one hit. Eleven days and counting!"
If one does not have pitching - it is very hard to have an elite team. Gone are the gorilla ball days when the balls left the ballpark in bunches. One player carried Arkansas last year and he ran out of gas in the playoffs - overuse.

I had some great food there in Lafayette. I went to the International Paper Box plant there for work. It may have still been Union Camp but I was there several days and had some excellent meals.

Mississippi State seems to have settled on their 1 & 2 starters but has 3 or 4 guys vying for that final spot.
One of the guys I said could get the Sunday start was Jackson Fristoe. He even started a lot last year and did well early in the year on Sundays. He appears to be sitting at 12 or 13th right now and not even in the mix.
Everyone thinks he has the talent but something is a amiss. His has lost some velocity and is sitting at 90-91. That used to be good, not so much anymore.

Yeah Lafayette is the heart of Acadian culture. Maybe a little south of Lafayette. And a lot of good Cajun cooking. Do you get to attend the Miss St. baseball games in Starkville. I love the cooking setup in left field. LSU and Miss State was a big part of helping college baseball become as popular as it has. Still not a huge interest, but it has improved over the years. I am thinking of going to Hoover this year for the SEC baseball tourney.

I did not attend Mississippi State. I was a fan because my cousin was an All-SEC Safety and 2nd team All-American back in the 70's when I was growing up. My daughter did attend State and she loved Mississippi State and baseball. She would have loved that run last year, there was even a kid that we knew on the team, Luke Hancock. He is from my hometown and I am friends with his dad. She knew him as well. She passed away to cancer a couple years ago and every time I watch a highlight or a game it gets emotional for me because that was something she and I shared. We talked after almost every game or big occurrence. I still have never attended a baseball game at State. I have been a season ticket holder of both football and basketball. My favorite sport to play was baseball. One of the few sports where being 5' 10 and 130lbs, you could still excel.
It's opening day. Mississippi State is the defending national champion hosting a #24 Long Beach State over this weekend.
1) State lost all of our starting pitching from a year ago. Landon Sims was our best pitcher for most of the year but he was a closer, he is now our Friday starter. Will Bednar (pitcher) leaving will hurt, he was the best player at any position in Mississippi State history in the postseason. He dominated the post season.
2) State lost the top two guys in the lineup from a year ago in Rowdy Jordan and Tanner Allen. Allen was the ABCA National player of the year. That dude was just different. You don't just replace him.
But optimism is abound. Everyone is excited and many think the State will be even better this year after losing all that production. All I know, is last year's ride was the best ever at State and I am excited about opening day.

LSU opens tonight versus Maine at the Box. I am pumped up for this season - new coach and bunch of new players plus a solid core of players coming back. It all depends on how the pitching shapes up.

LSU finishes the night with a 13 to 1 victory. Highlight of the night was Blake Money's pitching. He threw a two hit 7 inning shutout along with 10 strikeouts.
Maine with a lack of decent weather to practice - was very sloppy in the field and committed 6 errors.
LSU showed why they lead the nation in fan attendance with 11036 tickets sold.

Not much pitching today as LSU defeats Maine 17 to 8. The Tigers have put up 30 runs in two games. Offense is looking good so far. Jury is still out on the Tiger pitching staff.

LSU finished the week by winning 4 of 5 games and push the season record to 7-1. Hitting has been great. Pitching so-so and fielding needs improvement. The Tigers get Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor. Facing the number 1 Longhorns. I might go to the Saturday matchup between the Tigers and the Horns.
Nice lineup of teams to the Minutemaid Classic - Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor from the Big 12, UCLA and LSU and Tennessee. The SEC and Big 12 all play each other and UCLA playing all of the Big 12 teams.
Some pretty goods teams matching up early in the season. Texas is a solid number one and LSU and Tennessee both in the top ten.

Other than La Tech (which beat LSU), LSU's schedule thus far is just above 6A High School.
This week will show alot about LSU and its Pitching. It will also be a litmus test for the hitting as well. LSU is avg 12.25 rpg.

LSU starts the Minute Maid Classic with an extra inning win over Oklahoma. LSU behind in the bottom of the eighth 3 to 1 scored twice to force extra innings. The Sooners scored one run in the top of the tenth and LSU tied it at four. LSU scored in the bottom of the 11th for a 5 to 4 win.
LSU is now 9-1 for the season.
