Kelly leaving UCLA as Head Coach to be the OC for Ryan Day. Are we freaking serious? I know notdpb is probably happy, and I don't have a feeling one way or another, except this is crazy stuff.

Just coming to post this
Yeah, not really that happy. I mean, glad he’s gone, but the timing is effed. Sign a shitty class, screw over your team because the coaching carousel is pretty much done with, and that is after they didn’t fire your ass after the embarrassing losses during the season? Yeah eff you.

tOSU wreaks of desperation this year to win, or it is the end of the Day era. I mean, they seem all in on acquiring players and Coaches for top dollar. I mean, how many HC leave a team like UCLA and accept a job as an OC? Good luck, OSU!

Oh, and both Jonathan Smith and Jedd Fisch expressed interest in coaching at UCLA, but they both already got new jobs.
Thanks Chip!

P.J. Fleck being touted as the top of the (realistic) wish list. Eric Bieniemy also being mentioned.
I could probably live with either of those.

Not sure what to think of EB, but you definitely don’t want Fleck. As for Kelly leaving this is really strange to me. I mean I get looking at OC jobs in NFL to get a different sort of life and job duties without everything that entails in college, but did Day tell him “just come here and run the O. You don’t have to recruit.”

I don't know how Fleck would do at UCLA. He had done a decent job at Minnesota. However always in the back of my mind would be is that because of him, or the relative weakness of the Big Ten West. I also kind of think about Geoff Collins, who had lots of shtick but was a colossal failure at Georgia Tech. But no doubt, Minnesota has been better because of Krill before him and Fleck.

He also had a 13-1 season with Western Michigan, who he got to the Cotton Bowl.

I saw that last night - I didn't understand - why does a coach leave a head coaching position to accept an OC slot?
I wonder how UCLA is rated as being a place for a head coach in football. UCLA still has good basketball and baseball programs - what does that say about there football program?

Maybe he doesn't like sunshine. One doesn't see a lot of sun during the winter months in Columbus.

UCLA still has good basketball and baseball programs - what does that say about there football program? Few things here: 1) He HATES all the non-game coaching part of being a head coach- recruiting, schmoozing alumni, NIL. All things that are an important part of being a CFB coach. 2) He knew there was a very good chance that he was a lame duck. He likely would have been fired after next season anyway, unless there was a miracle, and with a schedule that includes @ LSU, Oregon, @ Penn State, Iowa, @ Washington, and USC that miracle probably wasn't coming. 3) UCLA is seriously lagging in the NIL game, which is partially his fault, but there are other factors. 4) Fan apathy is high right now. Again, that is partially his fault, but there are other factors. 5) The UCLA AD is in a huge financial hole.

Wow. Seems that I remember a bunch of bragging and chest-pumping when Kelly picked UCLA over Florida. Now, it is like, "Oh well, he's gone. No big loss." I guess all that NIKE money at Oregon can make any coach look good. I just can't believe Napier has outlasted Kelly.

Napier has only been on the job for 2 years.

Monday morning, UCLA announced that it has hired former Bruins star running back DeShaun Foster.
Foster, a former NFL running back and assistant coach, played in the league from 2002-08. He then went into coaching, starting at UCLA in 2013. Foster left for a job at Texas Tech in 2016, but quickly returned to UCLA, becoming the team's running backs coach in 2017, a position he held until 2023.
The ex-Bruins star, a second round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, was set to join the Las Vegas Raiders staff this offseason, but he's returning to UCLA as head coach.
"We are looking for a coach with integrity, energy and passion; someone who is a great teacher, who develops young men, is a great recruiter and fully embraces the NIL landscape to help our student-athletes," UCLA announced.
UCLA officially announced the hiring on social media on Monday morning.
"This is a dream come true," Foster said. "I always envisioned being a Bruin ever since I was young, and now being the head coach at my alma mater is such a surreal feeling, and I'm grateful for this opportunity. The foundation of this program will be built on discipline, respect and enthusiasm. These are phenomenal young men, and I'm excited to hit the ground running."

I was hoping for something...splashier? He has certainly been great as RB coach churning out 4 (at a minimum) very good ones in 4 years. He has also recruited well. But RB coach to HC? Yikes.
