My wife and I will be taking our first cruise next month. We have never been on a cruise liner before. We have taken a couple of ferry rides - Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Port Angles, Wash to Victoria, BC.
We are sailing out of Galveston on Carnival Dream for an eight day trip in the Eastern Caribbean with stop in Key West, Florida, two stops in the Bahamas and another stop in Half Moon Cay (Small island owned by Carnival, mostly a beach).
Any suggestions or thoughts as to what to look for or things to do?

Bring ear plugs. I’m surprised you booked a cruise on Carnival. Usually a younger, rowdier crowd than Royal Caribbean, Celibrity, Holland American or Princess.
A quick google search will show lots of articles on what to pack and what not to pack.

Cruises are over-rated if you ask me. I'm sure you will enjoy yourself, but once was enough for me.

A quick google search will show lots of articles on what to pack and what not to pack. The reason it is Carnival - Son arranged the trip and paid for it. He and my grandson are on the cruise with us. And it is out of Galveston - about 50 miles away. So no travel to get to the departure site.

Not a cruise fan particularly, but have enjoyed my one River Cruise a great deal.

We have done Carnival, Disney, and Royal Caribbean. Disney was by far the nicest, but also by far the most expensive. We like the cruises pretty well. Bahamas is kind of meh. If you like to gamble you can go to Atlantis, but it was pretty boring with a 4 year old. Second time we went to the Bahamas this past summer my son was 7 and old enough to go snorkeling. We had a good time with that, but the snorkeling is better in the Caymans or Honduras or Belize. The food on Carnival was pretty good, but not as good as Disney or Royal Caribbean.

When I go on a cruise I'm doing it on my boat.

The cruise is this weekend - Saturday until the following Sunday. Key West, Nassau, Freeport and Half Moon Cay. Leaving out of Galveston - about 45 miles from my doorstep.
So I will be offline for the cruise.
Everyone have a great week.

Cruising is what you make of it. If you're wanting/looking to enjoy yourself for the week, that can easily be achieved. If you're looking to find fault at every turn, that can easily be achieved as well.

We are going to rent a golf cart (street legal) and ride around Key West. In Nassau and Freeport - my wife and I will probably only go the shopping malls near the cruise ship. Half Moon Cay - probably stay on the ship.

The shops are the same in Freeport and Nassau and Nassau has been having issues with tourists getting robbed or worse lately. If you don’t like the beach then stay on the ship. Port days are some of the best days to stay aboard to experience the ship without all of the crowds.

Sorry, it's actually an ongoing joke with MtnTiger as he, like many of us have done in past, used loose instead of lose on a prior post a few months ago. That was not directed toward you, what-so-ever!

Home sweet Home, I am back.
Enjoyed the cruise - Man was that ship the Carnival Dream is long. Over a 1,000 feet. Lots of food. The blue water was beautiful. We got off the ship in Key West, Freeport and Half Moon Cay. We stayed on board at Nassau. My wife and I enjoyed the nightly shows. All in all a great trip.
Everyone have a great week.
