Just saw this. Am a bit shocked. For me, John Forney was Bama football for the longest time. And then it was Eli Gold. There have been some great radio announcers in the SEC over the years...Larry Munson, John Ward, Jim Fyffe and I am sure every fan has one I have omitted. Maybe it was easier with Nick now gone.

I was quite shocked myself. Eli Gold was a very good announcer for a despicable team.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama football’s offseason has been characterized by changes highlighted by Nick Saban’s retirement. Those changes continued on Wednesday as the program will have a new radio play-by-play announcer for the first time in nearly 40 years. Longtime broadcaster Eli Gold will not return to the Alabama radio booth this fall, according to a statement released by the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
Gold’s commentary spanned 35 seasons, eight head coaches and seven national championships. On Thursday, Gold shed light on the decision and what’s next for his career. He made one thing clear: The decision to part ways was not his.
“I was called into a meeting a couple of weeks ago in (Alabama athletic director) Greg Byrne’s office,” Gold said in an interview with Tide 100.9 radio. “The indication I was given was that the university was ready to make a change. I did offer a compromise. I said, ‘Look, let me do one more year. Let me do one more full season, home and away (games), and then I would quietly walk off into the sunset, and you wouldn’t hear from me again.’
“They respectfully declined that, and then they came back the very next day and said I was not being retained.”
Gold’s tenure at Alabama ends after missing the entire 2022 season with a bout with cancer. He returned to the radio booth in 2023 in a limited capacity, only calling home games and the Auburn game, which was on the road. Despite possible concerns about his health, Gold, 70, said he has a clean bill from his doctors and can work without limitations.
Gold said there were a few other factors that led to the split.
“They were not pleased with one or two things that I have said,” Gold said. “I was not pleased with the way (2023) was handled because I thought I was ambushed when they didn’t allow me to do the road games. They claimed it was for my health, but at that point, my health had already been cleared by the doctors, and I was doing well. It was just an uncomfortable situation. And it was clear that they felt it was time for me to be sent packing, and that’s how it goes.”

Wouldn't mind UGA hiring him. Not a fan of Scott the Screamer Howard.

Seventy years old - he needs to retire. Go do some bass fishing or maybe golf.

So he broadcasts for a few more years and then retires. No time to enjoy retirement.

Seventy years old - he needs to retire. Go do some bass fishing or maybe golf. The greatest baseball announcer of all time announced until 2016, just shy of his 89th birthday. The greatest basketball announcer of all time announced until 2002, just shy of his 86th birthday. If you are doing what you love, why stop, especially when a CFB season is only 12 games long? Note: You may disagree about the GOAT designations above. You would be wrong, and there is no arguing it.

No doubt about baseball for sure. Not an NBA fan so don't know. But Georgia's own beloved Larry Munson called games up to his 85th birthday and only failing health ended it for him.

Heck then, maybe when Biden hangs it up - he can take up broadcasting.

Terrible choice by Bama. First Saban, now this.
At least I still have USA. Oh that's right, DeBoer took our HC away.
I'm ready for the world to end.

Forecast for a nice sunny day tomorrow - don't worry. Weather has been perfect the last couple of days. A lot of sunshine and 70-75 degree weather. I have had to turn on the AC at night to 66

Heck then, maybe when Biden hangs it up - he can take up broadcasting. They are trying to shorten the games. Once ole Joe starts talking about Corn Pop, they will lose commercial revenue.

A couple of weeks ago, the Crimson Tide Sports Network announced that Eli Gold would no longer be the radio voice for Alabama's football team. It didn't take long for him to land back on his feet.
Gold has accepted a job to become the television voice of Jacksonville State. He'll cover football, men's basketball and baseball for the Gamecocks.
Gold, a two-time AP Sportscaster of the Year, missed the 2022 football season due to health issues. He made it abundantly clear that he's feeling great heading into the offseason.
"It's a good situation for me," Gold told OutKick. "The people at Jacksonville State have been friends of mine for years. I needed to get back to work quick so everybody knows I'm healthy. Just because the University (of Alabama) didn't want me any longer doesn't mean no one wants me. But that was Alabama's decision."
Jacksonville State reached out to Gold just hours after Alabama moved on from him.
"They called me within a few hours after I was cut loose by Alabama," Gold said. "I've been blessed."
In addition to landing the Jacksonville State gig, Gold accepted a position as an announcer for the Nashville Kats of the Arena Football League.
Gold told the Anniston Star newspaper that his voice is still good and that he's feeling "sharp" for the 2024 season.

I really like Gold. Called a great game for the Tide for many years.
