I’m baffled by this move. I heard elsewhere that if he didn’t leave he was going to be fired.
I just went back and looked. He accounts for just about 25% of all USC NCAA basketball tournament appearances by the Trojans. His winning record was something like 212-147 which is pretty good for a school where basketball is an afterthought most years. This years disappointing 15-18 record was the first time in 4 or 5 years they didn’t win at least 20 games.
Curious if anyone here has any insight on this move, whether he really was going to be fired if he didn’t move on or if there were other factors at play.

With the exception of this year, I thought Musselman did a pretty good job at Arkansas. He didn't have the superstars that a Kentucky, Duke, or North Carolina might have, but performed rather well. I am surprised he left Arkansas. Perhaps he didn't like the direction of the Athletic Department.

Maybe he is too isolated from the ACC to sense the chaos unfolding there. Regardless, if he is looking at how ACC men's team performed in the big dance, he can see that the conference (as it is) has outperformed all the other conferences in the tournament, so he probably is guessing that there is room for progress at SMU, which is (currently) in the ACC.

Not with Muss. There were things about Nevadas Athletic dept he didn't like. Much as you proposed about Arkansas'. He won't be at USC over 4 years. He'll get frustrated that he can't beat the top of the Big 10.
