I am not the smartest football fan by any means (of even BB for that matter) but totally love both. However I have NEVER been a bettor. I have no clue how all the "odds" work when looking at Vegas odds etc. I know it's not just a matter of the favored team but the spread as well. There's where I get lost. Someone posted on another board the Vegas odds for this week.
What I don't get is all the +3, -3, +10, +3.5 etc. If it just said a name and plus 3 does that mean that team is supposed to win but it has to be by 3, or more than 3 or what? What about the minus numbers? Can someone explain in total layman's terms?

I'm not a betting man either but I think TeddyDupay may be the man to help you out with this question.

-3 means that team is supposed to win by 3 points. if you think they will win by more, bet on them...if not bet on the other team....
it is reversed for +3....got it?

Thanks That's what I thought but why don't they just use one or other. Why say Team A +3 vs Team B -3. Wouldn't it just be logical if they play each other that the spread is to go both ways.

Typically the spread is shown for the home team. example WVa Marshall 24 or MTSU Louisville -38 and the Over under is listed next to the visiting team and notated by a lower case O. This is the total points scored by both teams. Your betting that the total will go over or under. If you bet under, you are a winner until you lose. If you bet over, you are a loser until you win. ;D WVA 62o Marshall 24 or MTSU 61o Louisville -38

This was a good question! I was wondering the same thing a couple days ago when I saw some of the other posts. Thanks for the education, GT!
