How big is this for the team?
MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin running back Lance Smith, who is facing battery charges, will not be allowed to play in away games this season. Smith will miss Saturday's game at UNLV and games at Illinois, Penn State, Ohio State and Minnesota.
Smith was suspended from the team in July after he was arrested, but athletics director Barry Alvarez reinstated him in early August just before the Badgers' first practice of the season.
The team announced Wednesday that Alvarez and dean of students Lori Berquam had decided Smith would not play in away games.
Smith is charged with pushing down his girlfriend during a dispute over a cab fare, refusing to let her leave his apartment and taking her money and shoes.
He has apologized to the woman but pleaded not guilty to charges of battery and disorderly conduct.

Anyone who would lay a hand on a woman in a malicious way should have that hand cut off.

What a moron... Anyways, I think that will mean more carries for PJ Hill and that can't be a bad thing for Wisky...

Is it possible that this is a legal decision, not a school decision? I wonder if he's under probation and can't leave the state?

That's odd, I wonder why that is. I guess they don't want to have to account for him on road trips.

That's odd, I wonder why that is. They play in the b10, no need for quality players on the road....

Don't be too quick to judge. All a woman has to do in front of the right judge is cry and say that something has happened and they can get a restraining order. The laws are meant to protect, but sometimes they are abused.

Yeah, cff is on the money here. He pleaded not guilty yet still gets punished? What had happened if he said "yeah, I tossed her down the stairs and then lit her boobs on fire?"
I'm sure @ some point in my 30s I'll do something stupid....can I just serve the time now and get it over with so when I have a better job and kids that look up to me, it won't effect anything?
Gotta wonder what he apologized to her for if he's not guilty though.
"Sorry honey, I didn't mean to tell you the meatloaf tasted like shit, it just did this time. And I've eaten shit, so I know."

Hey guys, well from what I understand the University decided on this punishment, it is not legal related (I thought that too but it has officially been refuted up here), the University decided he should get a 5 game suspension, the reason they chose ALL road games was because Lance is having trouble in a particular class and they felt that him missing class time on road trips would not be good for his studies (if he wasn;t needing a suspension what would they have done, oh well that is anotehr topic) so they killed two birds with one stone. Now then as for his infraction, while I agree anyone who hits or beats a woman is putrid person, however I am not sure what happened here exactly as I was not there, however I have heard a (supposed) eye witness account that he did in fact push her down (he did not hit her, lets be clear), however I also heard she was freaking out, he wanted her to help pay for a cab and she flipped out and started getting physical and he pushed her down, which sent her into an even bigger tailspin, she then threatened to leave etc.. in her tirade so he hid her shoes and money to try and keep her from leaving, I've seen some of these types of domestic spats and while he was by no means "innocent", sometimes it is tough to thinkk properly and do the exact right thing in those situations, anyway that is what I understand is going on. However if this account I got was not exactly what happened and he roughed her up, then kick him off the team cause I don;t want POS's like that on my team, but if it was accurate then I can understand those situations and can forgive.
Now then, as for how it effects the team, well fans are looking at this as John Clay's big chance to make a splash, Clay of course is the HS All-American who was the number 1 runningback in the nation after his junior year, and was still a highly sought after recruit his senior year, he was still blue chip and rated the number 1 "big back" in the nation, the kid is a freak with an NFL body though, he is 6' 2" and 220 and runs a 4.4 (and yes its football speed too, its legit), anyway we should look for him to get carries tomorrow night and also another true freshman, Zach Brwon, who has been incredibly impressive in camp will also get his share of carries, in fact Lance Smith BARELY won the #2 RB spot for the WSU game, the coaches said Brown actually looked better in camp than Smith but they thought Smiths playing experience from last year ( he was UW's #2 back last year behind PJ Hill) would benefit against a decent WSU team. If Brown and Clay can step up to their potential Smith MIGHT not get his number 2 spot back anyway, we'll see. Well I hope this answered some questions.
