With all the rumors that Virginia would try to lure him away from the University of Minnesota this offseason, Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith addressed the situation on WCCO-AM's "Sports Huddle" radio show Sunday morning by saying, "I plan on being here for a long time." "We all feel things are going in the right direction at this point in time," Smith said on the show about himself, athletics director Joel Maturi and University President Robert Bruininks. "We know we have a lot of work to do, but we think, with all of the players returning, we'll be fine." Virginia, which fired coach Dave Leitao on March 16, was reportedly interested in Smith, who began his coaching career as an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth. Smith and his wife also have family in Virginia. But Smith said on WCCO that he believes Minnesota has "a chance to be a top-20 team" and compete for a Big Ten Conference title next season.

Smart move by Tubby. Minny is probably a better situation than UVA.

Well, I'm no UVa fan myself, but until UVa has announced their new BB coach, I'm not counting Tubby out @ UVa. Right now, he's probably the #1 candidate per the fans and talk radio. Granted, UVa will never be a consistent winner in a league like theirs but, they have a lot to attract a proven coach, including the facilities. The next coach here has a chance to become a legend for just making them competitive. Personally, I believe they should grab the VCU coach, Anthony Grant, who might be a longterm leader for years and years.

They should first at least interview Grant before moving further. A lot cheaper at the moment for a proven winner. I have head from reliable sources that UVA will pursure Grant.

Tubby would be foolish to go to UVA. The big 10 could be a much easier conference to become a consistent winner

Hmm....Looks like I was right on Tubby, but then again I don't think this guarantees anything. Still the Big Ten has really loaded up on a lot of good coaches.
Tom Izzo Bo Ryan Tubby Smith John Beilein Tom Crean Matt Painter Thad Matta Bruce Webber Bill Carmody(Underrated, big time)
Lickliter, and DeChellis are decent as well.

I always like to hear when a reporter asks a direct question in these press conferences (which I didn't hear from Tubby's)...'Coach Smith, are you saying you will not take the job in Virginia under any circumstance?', until I see and hear his response (ok, except for Saban) to this question, all bets are off.
