Papi finally hit a home run.
Anyone have a take on him. I have some concerns that he won't ever be back to his old self and the Sox will need to trade one of the young pitchers (better not be Bowden) to get a big bat.

Even with Bay on the tear that he is, pitchers will still pitch around Papi. JMO

JMO actually they aren't pitching around him at all... they are going right at him... when he gets into the lineup these days. I have a bad feeling that this is a sad case of the steroids. He cannot catch up to anything and is getting nagging injuries left and right.

Big Papi is a different hitter now than he was just a few short years ago.
Was it steroids? Possibly. Was it the wrist injury? Probably partially. Was it the fact that he is getting older and cannot catch up to the inside fastball? Possibly.

Was it the fact that he is getting older and cannot catch up to the inside fastball? Possibly. I think all of those are probable causes of his decline. I also think not having Manny is a big part. I always thought that Papi was fun loving character, but I never bought as much into his greatness. I think they might of won a title w/o him, but I'm quite positive that they couldn't have w/o Manny. JMO.

Yep. The reign of Big Papi as a scary hitter is defenitely over. He might not even be serviceable at this point.

think the sox have to make a move here... they have a ton of young pitching that they could trade for a big bat... problem is which one do you pull the trigger on.

Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres... they obviously want to rebuild (hence why Peavy is on the market)... trade some young arms and talent for Gonzalez... and watch out for that lineup....

He is incredibly underrated. He is a great opposite field hitter as well (Fenways deeper right field would not effect him as much as many other lefties). I am not sure if the Padres want to trade him, but if they do it is certainly a deal that should be done. It would move Youklis over to third (Gonzalez is a good defensive first basemen as well). That would allow Lowell to play DH more often, and he is 36 and could use that rest. My guess is it would take a Buchholz and another solid prospect.

Ellsbury Pedroia Youk Gonzalez Bay Drew Lowell Tek Lugo/Green
ummmmmm... I'd be OK with that. That is a ton of bats.

I'm not positive either if the Padres want to get rid of him... He's a Mexican-American superstar and in San Diego... he's the dream player for their Marketing and PR people... but if they really want to rebuild like they say they do.... getting rid of Gonzalez could bring as many as 3 prospects and 1-2 Major League players to the Padres...

The Sawx are probably better with Ellsbury at the bottom of the lineup. He doesn't see enough pitches to bat in the leadoff spot IMO. Red Sox are undefeated with Pedroia in the leadoff spot.

BTB... I think in the long run they would be better suited with Ellsbury is better up top... he is a game changer that needs to develop and without having him up there, he isn't going to do that... IMO
think they have to "suffer" through this.

I'm not a fan of Ellsbury... not a good enough contact hitter to ever be as good as he was projected... it does no good to be fast if you're sitting on the bench after striking out...

If Ellsbury could steal first he would be a great leadoff hitter...

I wanted to keep coco and get rid of Ellsbury, but that didn't happen... but I that kid is unbelievable on the base paths... I think he can be coached to put the bat on his shoulder more often... one thing they really worked on in the off season was going the opposite way and slapping it to left... he has started doing that fairly well, so that gives me some hope.

He should see plenty of good pitches to hit.... with Pedroia, Youk, Bay, and co. behind him... walking him is like an automatic run... he just needs to learn plate coverage and cutting down his swing to put the ball in play...

not sure what there problem is right now... some games they will post 10 runs, then turn around and only score 2 twice in a row... something is off this season, not to mention that the pitching currently isn't panning out the way they thought it would... but that could always turn around... and if it doesn't, Bowden may find himself in the rotation before the end of the year.
