I agree with that sentiment in metro areas and certain areas of the country to some degree. However I don't think that is true as a blanket statement. Alot of smaler communities have excellent public schools. The public schools in our town are actually better than most of the private schools in our area and as a consequnce I personally only know ONE family, that's it, one in the whole town, that sends their kids to private school and even they told me they are likely going to take him out of there and send him to public school next year. On top of that I am very active in my kids education (every parent should be) and I find the cirriculum to be alot more challenging than what I faced at the same age when I was growing up and the city I grew up in was considered to have good public schools when I went there.

Isn't the Alabama State Motto, Thank God For Mississippi? It is, but I think we're losing ground. Soon it may be "Thank God for Mexico."

I applied to Duke and got accepted, but no scholarship money though... Strange, did you not have very many extracurricular activities or something? Or a low GPA? Hmm...

I was sixth in my class with about a 4.63 GPA. I also was on the yearbook staff, academic team, a member of the National Honor Society, and also was Sergeant-at-Arms for our Key Club. Won a couple academic awards and was actually nominated for "Who's Who Among American High School Students" by my chemistry teacher.
So, yeah, I dunno... it's crazy stuff.

Well, I was 3rd in my class with a 4.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), Beta Club President, Scholar's Bowl captain, National Honor Society, and a Who's Who Among American HS Student's too. Football, Baseball, and Track as well. I guess they were just being picky. Like I said though, they didn't offer me any scholarship money though. Even Vandy offered scholarship money...

Yeah... the funny thing is that I got into Southern California and got over $17,000 in grants from them (no scholarship though). The fact that it costs about $45,000/year to go there definitely took USC out of the question though.

Precisely. The only reason I'm at Miami is because of the scholarship I got from them - 3/4 tuition.

That's kind of surprising. I know many private school are 100% need base in their aid. Even if you don't qualify for merit scholarships, they will offer you grants and need based scholarships to the point that you need to attend. Ie. if the school costs $40K and your parents/yourself demonstrate that you can only come up with $4K per year, then they make up the balance with the grants, need based scholarships, and very minimal federal loans. That was one of the reasons I went to Richmond. I received no academic scholarships from them, but my parents paid about $3K per year for me to attend and I came out with about $20K in student loans. It really wasn't that bad. That's usually one of the perks of these private schools that have huge endowments.

That is true, and the experience that I have had as well.
I was going to go to Ohio State, but got offered a bunch of grant, scholarship money from a smaller private school. When I looked at it, it was significantly cheaper to go to the private school that was going to give me all the aid instead of paying for Ohio State out of my pocket.
