Just two weeks ago, Texas A&M won the national championship in men's Golf...becoming the first Aggie program to win an NCAA title since Softball in 1987. In just a span of two weeks, Texas A&M has now won three national titles.
The final two championships took place on the track as both the Aggie men and women finished on top at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which closed out Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Early afternoon on a blazing hot day in Northern Arkansas, the A&M women's squad claimed the outdoor title with 50 points, edging out Oregon's 43 for first place. Arizona State (41), Florida State (40) and Texas (36) round out the top five.
About an hour after the women's victory, the Aggie men followed suit with a sensational championship win in come-from-behind fashion. Heading to the final event -- the 4 X 400-meter relay -- A&M needed to finish in third place (assuming the favorite Florida State took first) for a share of the national championship. The Seminoles did run away with first place in the relay, but the Aggies held off the surging Baylor Bears to finish in second place in the event...taking sole possession of the NCAA Championship.
The Texas A&M men finished with 48 points, holding off Oregon, Florida and Florida State...all of which finished with 46. LSU claimed fifth place with 36 points.
What a sensational finish to another strong athletic season overall at Texas A&M. Coming into the 2009 season, the history of Aggie athletics (which obviously dates back to the late 1800s) had produced only three national titles in team competition (Football-1939, Softball-1982, 1983, 1987). You can now add three more championships to the A&M trophy case, which currently sits at seven total titles.
We talked a lot about Bronson Burgoon's championship-clinching shot on 18 at the men's golf finals on May 30, hoping that shot and that win would open the door for many NCAA Championships at Texas A&M in the coming years. Well...the next possible opportununity came on Saturday and Texas A&M rose to the top!
What can you say about Pat Henry? The guy is a legend and maybe the best living track and field coach in the country (if not the world)! No other NCAA track coach has won both the men's and women's outdoor titles in the same year, and Henry has now done that three times (twice at LSU)!
Many on this website are not huge track fans...some are and some aren't...but every sports fan and every Aggie loves being the best. With that in mind, let's give Pat Henry and the Texas A&M Track and Field teams a big "congrats" for closing out a special year in Aggie Athletics and finishing their season at the top of the track world!
