This sh*t pisses me off soooo much. tv.yahoo.com/the-late-show-with-david-letterman/show/31647/news/urn:newsml:tv.tvguide.com:20090615:1006900__ER:1David Letterman's comments about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and one of her daughters has prompted a hotel chain to pull its advertising on CBS' website ā and spawned a campaign to fire the Late Show host that includes a planned protest outside his studio. Embassy Suites, part of the Hilton Hotels Corp., pulled advertising on CBS' site because of complaints, company spokeswoman Kendra Walker told TVGuide.com. The company was not an advertiser on Late Night with David Letterman. "We received lots of e-mails from concerned guests and we assessed that the statement that he made was offensive enough to our guests and prospective guests that we elected to take the ads down," Walker said. CBS did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. Letterman joked last week about Palin's daughter being "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. He later clarified that he was referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin ā who, he said "was knocked up." But the Palin family and Letterman critics said he was referring to the governor's 14-year-old daughter, Willow, who attended the Yankees game with her mother. "It's a disgraceful comment and it needs to be stopped," said Michael Patrick Leahy, one of the organizers of the "Fire David Letterman" campaign. "It is totally inappropriate and disgraceful for a 62-year-old man to sexually insult a 14-year-old girl, period. These comments are more egregious than those of Don Imus, and CBS fired him for those comments." Leahy, who also helped organize the anti-tax "tea parties" in cities across the country earlier this year, estimated anywhere from 50 to 300 people would attend a protest planned outside Letterman's studio in New York City on Tuesday. The campaign has also urged advertisers, including Embassy Suites, to pull their ads. What do you think? Should Letterman be fired? Stupid off color joke? Sure. The guys a comedian though, what do you expect? I agree on the Imus point, but that doesn't make this right. I'm not even a Letterman fan. I have never watched a single episode of his show. This is just so pointless and bitter. LET IT FREAKING GO ALREADY. We got much more important things to worry about than a stupid joke and your looking just like the politically correctness morons you complain about. Be the bigger man (or woman). Sorry for the rant, I just can't believe this was more than a one day story. This is just sad now.

And he apologized and explained himself a second time. Can they just let this go now? tv.yahoo.com/the-late-show-with-david-letterman/show/31647/news/urn:newsml:tv.ap.org:20090616:us_tv_letterman_palin__ER:1358David Letterman said his joke about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter was a lousy joke, no matter how you cut it, and he's sorry. But the late-night host insisted that what's got people really riled is the misconception over which Palin daughter the joke was about. On Monday's edition of "Late Show," Letterman explained that the risque joke thought by some to have targeted Palin's underage daughter, Willow, was actually referring to 18-year-old daughter Bristol. The name of the daughter wasn't mentioned in the joke, which was part of Letterman's monologue on last Monday's show. It was "a coarse joke," "a bad joke," Letterman told viewers. "But I never thought it was (about) anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure, in fact, that she is of legal age, 18." "The joke, really, in and of itself, can't be defended," he declared. Even so, the ongoing outcry, led by Palin and her husband, Todd, has centered on Letterman intending to make a joke about the Palins' 14-year-old daughter having sex with a Yankees baseball player. Todd Palin issued a statement last week that said "any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable." And Sarah Palin charged Letterman with "sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity." On Monday's show, Letterman said, "I'm wondering, 'Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?' I've never made jokes like this, as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years." If that's the misconception -- that the joke was aimed at a 14-year-old -- he understands why people are upset, he said. "I would be upset myself." Letterman has said from the beginning that he thought the Palin daughter who attended the Yankee game was Bristol. "I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke," he said. "It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault that it was misunderstood." He apologized to both daughters, "and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke," he said as the studio audience applauded. "I'm sorry about it, and I'll try to do better in the future."

Since when did the Cons get so PC? Don't know if they're being PC. Just got a stick up their asses. Letterman is a pretty liberal guy, and they're getting on their high horse because he slipped up and made a bad joke. It's the same BS on either side. I'm just so sick of this sh*t. I would never even have heard the joke if it wasn't for them complaining about it. If Palin wants to speak her mind and say she didn't like the joke then so be it. But after that just be done with it for goodness sake. No need for this to be an actual issue. It's so pointless.

It is well known that if you are on the national political stage, you become fodder for late night comedians. As sure as the sun will rise in the morning. She needs to get over it.

No, they absolutely should not fire Letterman. But if anyone believes that that was an apology, you must also believe in the tooth fairy and have a bridge for sale in Brooklyn.

It is well known that if you are on the national political stage, you become fodder for late night comedians. As sure as the sun will rise in the morning. She needs to get over it. That's true, but I can somewhat understand her being upset about her kids being made fun of. That's a little difference. She let everyone know she was upset, Letterman 'apologized', fine. Let it go. What pisses me off is that she went on TV again to bitch about it, then her husband released a statement as well. Okay, again, it might be overkill, but I understand it's your daughter and you feel you need to protect her. What I cannot stand though is a protest being formed and people wanting him to be fired. Just let it freaking go. You know they'd be defending Rush Limbaugh to the death if he said anything close to that or something that came off racist but was obviously a joke. And if that's the point they want to make, then they can f*ck off. I think it's counter productive to use the "well thei always pull this stuff, so we are too" excuse. Lead by example, instead of being hyper sensitive asses. Damn, I don't know why I'm actually getting so irritated over this.

"I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke," he said. "It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault that it was misunderstood." That actually does sound like an apology. I didn't see it live so I can't make a judgment on his sincerity, but I don't think it's fair to just assume he doesn't mean it. I don't really care either way though, because I don't think it's necessary for him to apologize. The amount of controversy over this is a joke though. And not a funny one.

Her daughter is not the first to be made fun of. Chelsea Clinton? Patti Reagan? Cheney's daughter? I'm sure there are many others that don't come to mind, right now.

Can you show where Chelsea, Amy and any of the others had a joke about them when they were 14 and got knocked up by A Rod or something like that?
I said he shouldn't be fired. I heard his first apology and again, if you seriously took that as an apology you would believe anything. It was another opportunity to make another joke.
There is a double standard. But just because there is one standard for Imus and another for Letterman does not make me want to see Letterman fired or anything else. But again, that was no apology.

This is all ridiculous. It has nothing to do with PC, just more partisan political bullshit. If it had been about a Democrat's 14-year old daughter after the other daughter got pregnant outside wedlock, no body would have said boo. Or it'd have at least been the other side saying boo.

This is an apology? Too friggin funny.
Again, I could care less about this and there is no doubt others are attempting to use it. But don't try to tell us Letterman himself is making a big deal out of it because as usual this boosts ratings.

Rush called Chelsea Clinton the "White House dog." C. John McCain on Chelsea Clinton: Why is Chelsea so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno. Shall I go on?

dpb, She took the 14 year old to the game, not the 18 year old....frankly as if that should make a difference.
Those remarks are equally dispicable. But McCain did apologize in person to the President. And Rush is not a comedian but a partisan commentator. If you want to get into a competition on which side throws more nasty statements at the other side it is an endless battle...both sides do it as we know.

Yep, just a big non issue. Bad joke that is going too far because Palin wants it to. And what would be the end goal? David Letterman being fired? How long would that make the Palins happy? 5 seconds? 10?
This is pointless.

I just really heard this fully tonight, and have to say get the hell over it. Many comedians have made controversial comments. Like so many have posted on here about posters, this country needs a thicker skin. Just my thought.

How long would that make the Palins happy? 5 seconds? 10? This is pointless. To be clear though, they didn't ask him to be fired. It's the tea party guy and some protestors. The Palins aren't helping the matter by keep bringing it up, but there the only people I'd want to here any complaining from because it's their daughter. I might react the same way if someone said something like that about my kids one day, so I'm not going to complain about them to much. It's the protestors that piss me off because it's such a dumb issue.

So does the Rutgers team need to get over it? Or are you only saying this because the ones protesting this time, "this time" are cons and not libs? How can you be outraged when one old man makes a remark about someone, and not when another does it? I'm honestly curious.

Actually, he will invite him to a white house dinner and have him do stand up. No He shouldnt. Regardless of how much of an ass it made him look. He should not be fired. People do need thicker skin, but it was only a matter of time before the cons started pulling out the ole Lib tactics on every mis cue and bad joke out there. Its pointless.

It is well known that if you are on the national political stage, you become fodder for late night comedians. As sure as the sun will rise in the morning. She needs to get over it. As far as I know, Bristol and Willow Palin never put themselves on the national stage. Do I think he should be fired? No. Was the joke tasteless and out of bounds? Yes, no matter which girl he was talking about. If it was about Bristol, he was almost certainly taking a swipe at her stance that teens should learn from her mistake and practice abstinence. And he certainly should have known which girl was actually at the game before he made the joke. And I certainly have no issue with the hotel chain pulling their ads. And if I was Todd Palin, I wouldn't have issued a statement. I would have issued a swift kick in the arse... ;D

I think this whole thing is hysterical. Letterman is the one who is benefiting from those buffoons protesting and you folks are upset. He is laughing his ass off and you guys seem bound and determined to defend ole Dave like Leonidas defended Thermopylae. I made two statements in my original post. One that Letterman should NOT be fired. Two, that if you think that that was an apology you believe in the tooth fairy. And I have heard zilch here to change my mind. Now, I will have no further comment on this issue.

Why am I not surprised this has been elevevated to what it has become? Please...a "Fire David Letterman" campaign??? Letterman isn't going anywhere. Here we have a classic case of a scorned bitch who lost her bone, I mean election and wants a little sympathy from the general public. And that puppet of a husband is going to do everything he can to make sure she gets what she wants.
I can certainly understand their anger if the joke was, in fact, regarding a 14 yo girl. But Letterman has explained, ON NATIONAL TELEVISION, that he believed the joke to be in reference to an 18yo girl. AND he has appologized twice.....TWICE!!! What else do these insecure misfits need? It's over, Man. Give it a rest. Know your role, sit down, shut your mouth and suck your thumb.
This is the kind of shit comedians have to deal with. As soon as you hurt somebody's ego BAM......you need to be fired, banned, rejected, banished, recalled, canned, stoned or impeached. If George Carlin was still alive he could tell you ALL about wimps who can't take a fucking joke. Like I said....Letterman isn't going anywhere. These dumbasses are wasting their time.
