I watched the US vs Italy game yesterday and was not overly impressed with the US. There offense is minimal at best. In the first half, they had 3-4 good opportunities to score and finished 1, which was a penalty kick set up with very little ball movement prior to it. The defense, I will give credit to. Sure they gave up some goals in the second half, but they were playing a man down against the reining World Cup Champs. I guess the same could be said for the offense, but their really seemed to be nothing at all... no build up, no movement... just 100% stagnant.

I hate the Italians. They may have overtaken the Brazilians as the best floppers in the world. That red card was BS. Also we have no chance in South Africa, but what else is new?

I have to agree that the red was a complete sham... yellow, would have bought it, just a penalty, would have agreed, but red was bogus. especially when they turned around and elbowed Landon in the face right after it and only got a yellow.
Brazil isn't playing all that well, but even with that, I agree, we don't have a chance against them. We do need to beat Egypt though when we face off against them. Losing all three would be a disgrace.

Now Spurrierz, there wouldn't be any resentment about the Zidane episode would there? I agree about their flopping as much as I like the Azzuri.....what would you expect from the land of Romeo and Juliet?

Ha, nah that definitely wasn't a flop. materazzi had it coming and he got it. les bleus will definitely be my team in '10 when the US inevitably gets eliminated in the group stage.

Unbelievable... I didn't know they were even capable of scoring 3 goals in 1 game.

Egypt played out of their minds in this tourney and couldn't advance. USA played down a man in two games and overall did not play well and still advanced. USA is no where near Brazil or their likes yet but on the other hand they are making steady improvement in the game with eaching passing year and each passing decade. They will compete at the highest level within the next 20 years IMO.

I feel like we had a better team 4-5 years ago then we do now... although there are a lot of key players that are really you, so the future is bright.

What is the US ranked now?? I think it's 14th, if I'm not mistaken right before the last World Cup the US was ranked like 7th or 8th.

as long as all our best athletes are playing football, basketball, and in some cases baseball it won't happen. if soccer was the #1 sport here we would win the world cup every year.

I remember them being ranked top 10 back then as well and frankly I questioned that ranking at the time. I never saw anything that made me believe they had made the leap into the top 10. The #14 ranking is about where they belong for now but if the young talent keeps developing I see a top 10 and very competitive team in the future. Our "best" athletes play all kinds of sports now a days including soccer. Jozy Altidore is a physical specimen who would accel at any sport he played as one example. Our best athletes are playing other sports (although I do not think OUR best athletes are playing baseball by and large anymore, I think you can eliminate that fromt he list ;D)..... That said, we have 300 million people in this country, by contrast Italy has a mere 58 million (give or take), our talent pool is 6 times larger than that of Italy, you'd think we'd have an ample talent pool to choose from to be able to compete with them. I think it's happening. Our actual problem is not talent IMO, it's that we make youth sports too complicated, christ third world countries have competitive soccer teams because they jsut play, and they play all day long til it's dark out, over here we think playing soccer should cost $400 and can only be played while being supervised by some idiot parent coach who likely never played the game themselves. No we won;t get better on the international level at any sport until we get the beaucracy out of youth sports and jsut let the kids play

Kaara,
Our very best athletes by in large are not playing soccer. If you took the best athletes in the country playing the sports of hoops and football and got them playing soccer at an early age, we would be way more competive.
In other countries, soccer is THE sport, plain and simple. It's not here and it won't be any time soon.

Heck, I wrecked two knees playing in adult leagues after college. But for the most part the better players in any league I participated in had either an island or hispanic accent. Not southern. The whole issue goes past training. It's ability and aptitude. Donovan sees the playing field in a different way than most of our players. He's the exception. We tend to talk up the fact that we've had a lot of players overseas, which is good, but how many of those players are making an impact at the elite level? Maybe two? That's a testament to the abilities of American players vs world players.

This will surely be one of the bigger wins in Team USA history, even if it is only the Confederation Cup game. Three minutes extra time.

Yep! Great win. DeMerit had a simply outstanding game. Though there's still a gap between the back line and midfield, the spacing side-to-side was much better than in the first three games. Maybe, just maybe, we're seeing some chemistry starting to come to the front.
Unfortunate for Bradley. For a change I don't think his red was a good call. Still, he puts himself in position for those calls.
