Called today and said he has the swine flu. He left at noon and went to the doctor and he called and claims he was told he has swine flu. Honestly, I am skeptical of his claim, I think he just wanted next week off, but whatever better safe than sorry, told him not to come in until the following Monday (assuming he is symptom free by then). Swine flu can be contagious for one day before symptoms occur to about 7 to 8 days after they show up, so the following Monday should be safe so long as he feels better, but seriously, swine flu, are you freaking kidding me. Ugh........

I actually live outside of Madison and this guy lives down in Beloit so I do not get the Beloit newspaper and I am not sure how "hot" the swine flu topic is for the local TV news any more. So we'll see.....

If he does have it, it will make the news. If he doesn't, he just might make the news anyway. I guess it depends on how much he ticks you off. ;D

Are you kidding? It hardly makes the news at all anymore. How many news reports did you see between the 1st person dying in NYC and the 23rd to die in NYC that was just reported? Or between when it was a few hundred in NYC infected and the estimate of 500,000 infected just reported? It's become old news, and unless it's the first case in your community, the news has moved on.

I would just tell him that just in case and to protect his fellow workers he should stay home until he can produce a letter from his doctor saying it is safe for everyone for him to return to work.....

Yes, he definitely needs to bring some documentation because of the seriousness of the illness. You have to protect your other employees and yourself kaara.

Unless you're on of those healthy, middle-aged people unfortunate enough to die from the flu in the time of year when the flu isn't normally active like the 23+ and counting in NYC alone this month. I mean they've got those people REALLY believing they're dead! Suckers.

The news is following their usual script - over hype something when it comes out, then under report it afterward when it isn't the flavor of the day anymore.

No worry, we're cool...and you are exactly right. God forbid, but the only other time we will likely hear much about it is if it 'suddenly' erupts all over.

So my employee is back at work today and as I expected it was NOT swine flu. He claims his doctor told him his symptoms looked liek swine flu (are you freaking kidding me???) but they did actual blood work and it was not swine flu, it was a common cold.

My kid's got something right now that's giving him more spots than a leopard, and the doc says it's not chicken pox, just some other kind of virus.
In my experience, docs today would have to increase their efforts 1,000,000% to give half a shit about actually diagnosing something correctly. They'd rather make a zero-effort guess and suggest treatment (or worse yet, ignoring it) based on that guess.

My oldest son had a weird "rash" of a bazillion dots when he was about 2 years old (he's 8 now). It was not chicken pox and it did not bother him at all (though it weirded me out totally). It went away after a few weeks but the docs said it was "a virus" never did get a "real" diagnosis

The thing my son has also itches wherever the spots are, and scratching them spreads them -- so pretty much the only spot-less part of him is right between his shoulder blades where he can't reach.
The doc said it'd take a week to go away, but this morning most of them appear to have gone except where he's created sores, and it's only been 24 hours.

Glad most of his spots have gone away, Sad. Otherwise, I would urge you to get a second opinion on what his condition may be.
When I was young, I got strep throat, and they put me on massive doses of Amoxicillin. During that treatment, I developed an allergy to penicillin and broke out in a rash from neck to toe that ultimately lasted for 6 months.
When the rash first appeared, however, the doctors misdiagnosed it as a secondary infection and UPPED my dose of penicillin!! Meanwhile, my throat nearly swelled shut, and my condition obviously worsened. One more dose, and I might have been dead. Fortunately, a second opinion recognized the allergy and halted the treatment.
When it comes to our kids, I'm all for second and third opinions on each and every mystery symptom.

Nexy employee to come down with the swine flu, you should report to the local paper. Put him on the hot seat and see what happens.
