That is sad news. He is a true American hero.
The wife and I watched the entire Band of Brothers marathon on The History Channel during the Memorial Day weekend. Great stuff.

God Bless him.
I suppose some of you saw the story about the 101st Soldier who visited the Colleville-Sur-Mer Cemetery at Omaha Beach two weeks ago. It was his first return to Normandy since his jump into France on 5 June 1944. He died that evening in his hotel room. He was able to visit his buddies one last time.
We owe these gents so much.

I wonder how many know how much we owe to thousands of 18 - 22 year olds who gave their all to give us the chance to have what we enjoy now.
The last episode of BOB has a scene with Shifty - if you haven't seen it you should watch it - if you've seen it - watch it again.

Shifty was the one that "won" the lottery, right?

Shifty was the one that "won" the lottery, right? Yep, he had accumulated the most points towards getting leave because he never got any time off the front line, wounded, etc., so the Co. rigged the drawing for him. He told me and my son a story about the siege in Bastogne and this German soldier who would do calisthenics across the lines every morning in full view of their rifle fire. One morning, Shifty said he decided when he came out he would shoot a round over his head just to scare him...he said he never came out and did his morning exercises after that.

Saw the final episode last night - they had the real Shifty on - it was strange to watch.
What I thought was amazing - they all said the same thing - the real heroes didn't come home.
And Winters comments - were you a hero - no - but I served with a Company of them.
How did we lose that attitude - answer that and you get my vote for president.

I think the answer to your question is right before your eyes. The most heroic soldiers that we have will never acknowledge their heroism. They always give credit to their buddies. Something that I find interesting about the generation of Americans that fought and died in WWII is the fact that the Great Depression was in full swing when these young men enlisted or were drafted. Times were tough and so were they. These men were survivors and were not spoiled by all the modern conveniences that so many of us enjoy today. I do believe that there are still heroic men and women in the military today. I also believe that most of the good soldiers have faced some very tough times before they became soldiers. I used to get really pissed at some of my fellow Air Force buddies when they would start complaining about conditions or whining about how unfair everything was. When I would hear them complaining I just wanted to bust them right in the mouth. I had better shut my mouth before I start ranting and raving. This is a topic that I have alot of emotion about.

Its the old Courtney Massingale and Sam Damon thing from Once An Eagle. Most Soldiers (Marines, Airmen, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen) are the latter. Not anxious to be in the spotlight...just doing their job and watching after their brother/sister. I see it at the airport every Monday. Folks clapping and cheering these guys that are headed back. Most of them are slightly embarrassed and while appreciative don't understand what all the fuss is about. There are real heroes among us, even today.

I saw on another site that HBO will be airing a Pacific version of Band of Brothers based on a couple books written by veterans, one being "With the Old Breed".
