I have been debating myself for several years about why I feel indifferent towards Phil Mickelson. I pay attention to Major PGA events, and I really don't have a prohibitive favorite golfer, but for the life of me I don't 'get' the love-affair so many people have with Phil.
I have nothing against him personally, he seems like a nice enough guy, and I feel sympathy for he and his family as they deal with her cancer...but what gives?
If you are a fan of his, explain to me what is so exciting about him. I have an idea why many root for him to win, but I'd like to hear from his proponents first.

Have you been hanging with GD, lately? ;D I'm not a Phil fan, so I don't fall into that category... and after further review, with everything going on with his family, this may have been done in poor taste... if anyone has any issues with my joke, i will be glad to delete it... but please note, it was not intended to be meant like that

I think there are a lot of reasons. First, he's always been well liked because he is generally seen as a pretty nice guy.
Second, he interacts a lot with the fans, whether it be the gallery as he's playing or signing autographs for hours afterwards. He acknowledges the fans way more than many players (cough*Tiger*cough).
Third, over time, before he won the Masters, he developed the "lovable loser" reputation because he would come so close so many times in majors.
Fourth, he has always put his family before the game, whether it was wearing the pager at the 1999 US Open, taking time off to be with Amy and the kids after she nearly died having their youngest, or the time he is taking off now to be with her as they struggle with the latest hurdle.
Just my humble opinion...

I owe you a +1 when I get recharged. I was going to write this on the US Open thread, but the joke deserves to be mentioned on any and all threads... at least Phil was "in the Hunt" in response to Hunts "man crush" for Phil... still laughing at that one.

As an old man I can tell you that Jack Nicklaus was dis-liked and made fun of because of his weight when he first hit the golf scene. People hated him, and loved Arnie.
Finally in the 70's Jack lost alot of weight and somehow became more popular. He still never was as loved as Arnie. Respected maybe, but not loved.
So it is with Phil. Tiger is buff, Phil is soft. But Phil is trying to change that.

Mickelson was seen by his peers as disingenuous in his early years on tour. After being the best player in the NCAA for three years, including a US Amateur title, he thought he was going to be what Tiger has become and was somewhat obnoxious about it with the other players. He has always been careful to posture himself well with the fans, but the dirt inside the ropes eventually gets out.
The first to break the story was Jim Rome, who had a brutal commentary on the subject during one of his shows several years ago.
Lately, I have started giving him the benefit of the doubt as he seems to be drinking from the cup of humility a little more often. He is doing good things with his charities and showed up, unannounced, at an appreciation luncheon held in honor of the Sailors of the Year from several Navy Commands in San Diego during the Buick Invitational back in 2006.
I don't know what the real truth is and even though he is not my favorite, I guess I am running out of reasons not to like him.

Tiger's personality without the ability to back it up would be pretty damm grating....

Of course Phil went at odds with the PGA for years to shorten their season, not playing in late/post season events because "he wanted to spend more time with his family". Well the PGA finally did shorten the season and where did we find Phil, well it wasn't with his family, it was actually over in places like Shanghai and Thailand playing in Asian events for HUGE appearance fees. So maybe family wasn't quite as important as he had been crying about all those years....... Several of his PGA brethren have called him a hypocrite for that exact thing over the years.
Interestingly, PGA tour players all say behind closed doors that Tiger is inceedibly personable and very well liked while Phil, well, not so much.....
I know neither player personally and I like both as PLAYERS on the tour. As fans I think anytime we try and "peg" a professional athlete on the personal side we are generally way off base.

You guys should talk to Huntgator, on this one. He is knowledgeable, on Phil, as he is VP of his fan club, or something like that.

Well Steve Stricker is the salt of the earth. Players love him, media thinks he's great and since he is from my area I know alot of people who know him personally and everyone says the guy is the nicest guy on earth and I have met him once and he was tremendous to me and my family. Stricker has said publicly (and to the people we were withwhen I met him) that Tiger is a great guy behidn the scenes, Tiger jsut struggles with making sure his private life stays private, not because he's a dillhole but because he is 10 million times more recognizeable/famous/richer than any one else on tour. Phil can go out to a random local mall and 9 out of 10 people won;t recognize him, Tiger has no such luxury.
I've never heard Stricker comment either way on Phil so I don't know how he feels about him. So I'll leave that at that.
My guess is, considering how rich/famous/under cosntant pressure etc... Tiger is, he probably is as decent a guy as he can be given his circumstances.
Phil was a cocky prick when he came on to the tour, he maintained said cockiness for a long time and alienated many people. As he ages I suspect he is trying to change his public persona but as my dad says "you don;t change the spots on a leopard". Again personally I havennever had a problem with Phil but how I feel and how he is perceived publicly and by his peers are different things.

Many people like Phil because he takes chances. He also has a wedge game all golfers would die for. He needs it based on the number of time his risk taking lands he in jail.
