With their loss tonight they are 4 games back in the WC. Nothing wrong with that...but today they traded Scott Kazmir to the Angels for 2 players to be named. My thoughts on this move:

My thoughts on this move: Good, Kazmir is on my fantasy baseball team. Brewers are doing things that are making me scratching my head as well.

It's probably a cost-cutting move for Tampa. Even though they're only 4 out, it will be tough to catch 2 teams with about 35 games left.

I heard they are trying to save money so they can sign Crawford

Not ones that are as inconsistent as Boston and the Rangers can be. I agree with BTB. A real head scratcher on this one. If it's a salary dumping move, why not do it when they were a lot further out back in July and actually get something for him.

He has less value in August than in July. The Rays have been playing pretty well of late, and have brought themselves back into the picture. Kazmir has not been the 'ace' this year however, I am not sure this is the time to trade him. He is still a good young talented pitcher who throws left handed. That is a damn valuable commodity...

Tampa could've easily kept him. Really stupid move IMO. Angels ripped the Rays off on this one.

See, and I think this is an absolutely brilliant, well thought out move!*
*Did I mention I'm an Angel's fan?

I read that the Rays got two top notch prospects from the Angels farm system, a double A pitcher w/ impressive stats and a hitter with good numbers at sigle A, but he's 21 which kinda makes me wonder a little. Plus there's a third player to be named as well.
But what I can't figure is how Kazmir got thru waivers. I'd have thought the Yankees woulda snapped him up as well as about 28 other teams not named the Rays or Angels.
Can someone explain to me how this happened? I cannot see how this was consummated w/o some team putting in a waiver claim if only to block it.

I agree with DD... how did he ever clear waivers? The Sox rotation is decimated currently... although if Byrd pitches well, that will be a bonus.

I mean seriously, name a team in contention who couldn't use a pitcher like Kazmir? And its not like he breaks the bank w/ his contract.
And that's practical logic. What about strategic thinking? The angels have had the yanks number in the postseason most of this decade, why would they ever let a team in their division strengthen a team they're likely to see in the playoffs? A well-timed waiver claim would have blocked that and the Rays would have withdrawn him from the wiaver list.
Mystifying.
