Serious question.
I know Bama and UF look like world beaters, but is the rest of the conference down? Last year it really did look like there wasn't a truly weak team in the conference. Even Vandy was playing solid ball and winning some games, this year they haven't looked good for more than a few quarters. This year LSU has struggled against UW and Louisiana Tech OOC and have only really manhandled Tulane and Vandy and they are the #3 team. Georgia is obviously down, Auburn isn't as back as they looked to start. Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee have looked good in some games but certainly not great.
Is the SEC actually down this year?

Not this again. Seems we go through this every year somewhere around mid-season which is coincidentally when most SEC teams are in the meat of their conference slate. I don't think we will know if the conference is down until we see how they perform in their bowl games.

Sure it is... Hunt are you just being a smart ass? And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it isn't still a premiere league, but it just looks to me like the conference as a whole is down some from the last few seasons.

Short answer- yes. Doesn't mean it's not a good conference, just not what it was the last two years.

The SEC was worse last year.
Team by team:
Alabama.....at least as good if not better Arkansas....much better Auburn.....much better Florida.....better record wise, but appear to be a bit worse Georgia...much worse Kentucky...about the same LSU.....much better right now (remember they lost 5 last year and were pulverised by Florida and Georgia) Ole Miss.....about the same Miss State...better South Carolina....about the same Tennessee.....better Vandy....much worse
The SEC was down more last year....there were 4 good to great teams last year Florida, Bama, Georgia and LSU. After that, it was like falling off the cliff.
This year the SEC has 4 good to great teams (UF, Bama, Ole Miss and Ole Miss) But the Conference has much more strength in the decent range....Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas.
Part of the perception is that I believe the SEC as a whole was overrated last year. We will know more after the bowls. Remember, last year the Big 12 was thought to be the best and then three of their top 4 teams lost bowl games by double digits and the fourth barely escaped. The SEC won 6 of 8 bowl games and the PAC 10 won all 5 of their bowl games.

As far as a measuring stick, Not as down as the Pac 10, Big XII, ACC, Big East, Big 10,.................. GT, you dissapoint me. I was thinking that you would have just put the measuring stick on your post. Oh and I actually think the Pac 10 might be trending up and not just b/c USC won't win the conference.

As far as a measuring stick, Not as down as the Pac 10, Big XII, ACC, Big East, Big 10,.................. damn it GT... I am conflicted on your meaning on this one again. do you mean down as in, they are down from their normal strength, or down as in, not as strong as the SEC?

The Measuring stick is played out. Plus I couldn't find one that maxed out at 3".
PAC 10?
The Conference champ could have up to 3 loses?

good is a relative term BD... if you look at the Pac 10, who is going to be the winner... if you are looking at top 10 teams, they are at the bottom of the barrel for good teams... now if you are talking about teams that could beat top 25 teams, I could possibly agree with you on that one.

I think top to bottom, they have more depth than they've had in a while. Not necessarily that the top is as strong as it was when USC was dominating that position.

They don't appear to have an outstanding, dominating power like USC has been. But they appear to have a bunch of excellent teams...Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona, USC and Cal. Remember, these teams for the most part play more BCS level competition than any of the other teams in the nation.

So, since LSU was used as an example of why they are down this year with reference to La Tech
I will stick to that line of thinking and go with this:
Oregon, Loss to Boise at home and a Oregon state beat UNLV 23-21. I do not need to waste anyones time with how bad UNLV is. Stanford loss to Wake Forrest who, like UNLV, is abysmal. Arizona loss to Washington and a down Cal team. Do we need to go through the whole Wash thingy again USC - well, loss to Washington, got boatraced in their other 2 loses and barely beat a 4-6 Ariz State team 14-9 Cal -Got boatraced in all three of their loses and barely beat a 4-6 Ariz State team 23-21
See how easy that is when you play both ends against the middle.
Sorry, not buying it.

The difference is that the PAC 10 teams for the most part actually play challenging OOC in addition to 9 BCS conference opponents.
Top 4 SEC teams OOC Bama...Va Tech LSU....nada Florida...nada Ole Miss. nada
Those SEC teams have played 1 team currently ranked (Va Tech 15th)
Top 4 PAC teams OOC Oregon.....Boise State and Utah Stanford...nada Oregon State...Cincinnati Arizona...Iowa
Those PAC 10 teams have played much more challenging schedules. Generally that provides you the opportunity to lose more.

Good teams do not get boatraced out of the stadium, end of story. The defense rest Yo Hona!

Is a 10 point win over Tennessee on your home field better than a UCLA win in Knoxville? Is a 2 point win over Tennessee on your home field better than a UCLA win in Knoxville?
Was Ole Miss' win over Memphis impressive? Ugly, ugly, ugly!!
Was LSU's win over La Tech impressive? How about beating Miss State by a point in Starkville?
All teams have ugly wins this year. And then those who play no one at all out of conference like the Gators don't really risk much.
We rest, Suh!

I'm not going to compare the Pac 10 and SEC, but the Pac is definitely better than last year: USC- worse Cal- slightly better Oregon- slightly better Arizona- slightly better Stanford- better Oregon State- same UCLA- slightly better Arizona State- same Washington- better Washington State- same
EDIT: last year, the Pac 10 went 14-17 in OOC (before bowls). This year they are 20-9 (with 1 game remaining)

Husky,
I am not comparing either. I think the SEC is better....slightly. Year in and year out most of the conferences are relatively close though.

I love this conversation every year... the best part about it, it typically ends up being the SEC fans bickering back and forth about it... just read this one.
The SEC and Pac 10 clearly have different strengths as pointed out earlier in this thread. The SEC has two teams that are clear possibilities/favorites to win the MNC. The Pac 10 has none. The Pac 10 though, in my opinion, has more solid teams. The SEC has some bad teams again... MSU, Vandy, Kentucky... I'm not willing to put Washington or ASU down with them, or any other Pac 10 team for that matter. Wait, I forgot Washington State... but that is the only Pac 10 team that I would say, "UT would go there and beat them." And to me, UT is either 5 or 6 in the SEC.
