ESPN is reporting that Mike Lowell might be headed to the Texas Rangers for a catcher, Max Ramirez. Red Sox to pay 9M of Mike's 12 million dollar salary next year Brad? What do you think? If I was a Sox fan, I wouldn't like it but with Youk and Vmart, Sox had to do something...

Although not a Sox fan I like this move.
It is costing them a good deal of money, but it gets rid of Lowell (a good guy and hitter) for a good young prospect.
I don't know a ton about Ramirez but I do know that he plays C/1B. With the versatility of Youk to play 1B or 3B I think it is a move for the future and should benefit them in the future more so than now.

not only Youk and Vmart... but Ortiz... Lowell cannot play the field anymore so he is only valuable as a DH. This is due to the hip injury that was the same as Bo Jacksons and is unfortunate. I love Lowell, but this move had to happen.
As for Ramirez, he is probably just a piece in a trade for either a 1st or 3rd baseman. He is said to be a hell of a hitter, but terrible defensive catcher. I think that he will end up in the majors being a 1st baseman or DH.
As for the money, that is nothing compared to what they have paid for others to go away and they have a ton of money to spend... just heard that after this 9 million, they still have an additional 21 million that they are planning on spending, but upwards of 40 million that they could spend.
on another note, the Sox also got Boof Bonser... yeah

I'm not so sure that this trade is going to happen... it isn't finalized and rumors are that another team just jumped in on the Lowell sweepstakes... maybe less cash from the Sox.
as for the ND thread, speaking of political... wow, you never know where a thread is going to go... I see that one going way off on a tangent quickly... but I think that you guys will end up with Edsall, which would be a great choice for the Golden Domers... I just hope it doesn't happen, cause I would have to root for ND then... I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

It will be interesting to see if the Sox can get another prospect and cost them less money...possibly an even better deal. As far as the ND thread....I will keep an eye on that one...but hope that it doesn't go too far.

Regardless, I would love for this whole saga to end soon C'mon, my boys need a new coach!

As long as folks can respectfully disagree about issues...which seems to be happening

I agree that the ND thread is still fine... but as for the Sox deal, as it turns out, the deal is dead... not happening, and no other suiters as of now. All talk as of now... this is getting interesting and think the Sox will end up with Beltre at 3rd.

They might be able to get more for Lowell, but perhaps this deal was tenative and other teams reacted and wanted to make a move...who knows.
Lowell doesn't help the Red Sox that much because of Ortiz being penciled in the DH spot.
Oh and sometimes all it takes is a single post to turn a thread back around... Edsall is a good choice, although maybe not a big enough 'name' for some ND fans.

wow... the deal is completely over... speculation is that Lowell either failed the physical (duh, who didn't see that coming) or Theo has something much larger cooking... which I sure hope is not Beltre.

Don't like Beltre?
Why? He plays great defense. He isn't the best hitter at 3B, but he had a good year last year, and can certainly pick it at third.

he is an outstanding fielder yes... and with the monster in left, he could benefit from it... I think it is just his past that gets in the way of me liking him... came into the league killing it, was given a ton of attention, then fell off the map... last year was the first good year in a while for him.

It also depends on what it costs them to get him, that could make the difference between a good and bad deal as usual.
He is a good fielder, and could hit well in Boston (especially when he isn't forced to hit 4th like he has been for a while).

I don't think you will see him hit fourth in Boston... you have too many bats on that team to have him cleanup... also curious to see what happens in LF... gotta get Bay back IMO... Holiday is going to be too expensive. Then you could put Bay, Drew or Youk at 4 and Beltre could slide down to 6 or 7.

Without the pressure to hit fourth I think he can produce a little bit better. Not the focus of the other pitcher before the game, and not all the pressure is on him.

the trade didn't go through... he tore something in his thumb and will remain with the Sox... another 12 mill on the payroll... although, the Sox were picking up 9 of it in the trade anyway. I think that you may see him at DH more than you see Papi there... good for us.
