I'm clearly bored if I'm reaching for NFL shit...
Winners:
Cleveland: Gotta love the Browns. They trade for another team's best player (Rogers) for a guy that missed most of the season on defense. Sure, Rogers is a "bad guy" off the field, supposedly...but so was Randy Moss before last year. In addition to that, bringing back Anderson was huge. Tossing a green near rook in there on the cusp of making the playoffs would be regression. No one will be bitching about Derek if he has another year like last season. Stallworth left me scratching my head. 10 mil in guaranteed money to another club's 4th receiver? Wow.
Minnesota: I saw something on I think it was ESPN listing Minny as a winner for ridding themselves of Troy Williamson...and Jax as a winner for adding him. Can't have it both ways. T-Dub alienated teammates...oh, and couldn't catch crabs from a ten cent hooker. So instead of him, they overpaid for Bernard Berrian...but got him from a division rival. No word on how Berrian feels about going from one team with no QB to another. Madieu Williams is a good ass player too, if he came too expensive. Overall, they overpaid. But their close, and really don't have many bad contracts.
Indianapolis: I really think Bill Polian works on a different salary cap. How the fuck is he the only GM than can toss out top money to TWO WRs, a TE (Clark is the highest paid TE in the league now), Freeney, and Bob Sanders? As well as keeping his entire line together? I have no clue how this happens. At some point, it'll catch up to him, likely when Joe Addai comes up for an extension.
Losers
San Francisco: Just because you spend money doesn't mean you always win. Wow. One of the worst run teams left on the map of the Lions. They overpaid for Justin Smith...an end in a 3-4 who hasn't done much of shit (see: Bengals Defense) and then overpaid for a bunch of guys you've probably never heard of.
Oakland: Who the fuck is that DT Kelly getting paid like he's old Ted Washington? Nice work, Al. Apparently since he can't get Kiffin to resign, he'll just stack the deck against him. Good plan. Also, they let Chris Clemons go to Philly, when there's at least reason to believe HE was worth the coin. In addition to that, their #1 WR walked...leaving JaMarcus Russell with no veteran QB to ask help and no WR to toss to even IF there was help to be had.
Philly: Let's be honest here. Is Asante Samuel worth Champ Bailey money? They stepped up desperately in lue of a fickle fan base with this one. Samuel disappeared just as often as he saved games...once against these same Iggles this year. Why don't I like it though? Samuel, when asked what his goals were in free agency, only mentioned getting paid. Not winning. Not competing for a title. It was all about getting paid. Congrats, you got a selfish fella. Clemons was a good pick, but still, McNabb has no one to throw to. They were rumoured to be close with Moss, but I was close to getting laid by the cheerleading captain in high school. It didn't happen. Sorry, guys.
New England: Really they were stuck in limbo. Teams always over-pay for winners. The Colts got pilfered last year, only to see those guys get used (Jason David) or not show up (Cato June). Thus, the Giants...who were said to have a shitty LB core before the SB...now basically lost half of them to teams willing to overpay. Randall Gay went back home...amidst too much money. Samuel was overpaid. Stallworth, ditto. Signing Moss today saved them. It's a tough spot to be in when other teams will give your guys more than their worth.
Jury's still out...
Detroit: They said Rogers was an albatross off the field and in the weight room. So it's time to find out if they were right. I can't put faith in Millen with extra picks, but they desperately needed DB help and they got it. Kinda depends on the draft and if they're willing to pay for Roy Williams from here on out. My guess? 19-0. Hold on, "denial" is at the door and I have to answer.
New Orleans: What a huge steal Vilma can be if he's healthy. Resigning Patten was okay, nothing dramatic. Getting Gay...they overpaid...just like they did for Jason David last year. And he got fucking smoked all season. Like dope at a fuckin' Snoop Dogg party. Vilma is the key though. He has the talent to be a top 20 LB...again if healthy.
Jets: Faneca was overpaid for. Pace might just need a change of scenery. I think if they get any semblance of an offense, it could be the surprise team of the season.
Guys to watch:
Jake Scott, OL Colts: The best offensive line in the game has one unfettered. Indy opted to sign Ryan Lilja first. I have no idea why this guy's not sewn up yet by a team with QBs being held together by duct tape.
Warrick Dunn and other veterans on bad teams that just want one more shot at a ring. Ty Law comes to mind as well. These guys have maybe a year or 2 to give...but fuck, could be a steal for a team needing depth at said position.
What the hell?
-Rex Grossman being signed...by anyone let alone the Bears
-Cleo Lemon being signed...by anyone...let alone anyone.
-David Carr not being signed by anyone. Actually, I take it back...this isn't surprising.
-Da Bears having NO receivers. Well, now they have something to go with having NO quarterback.
-As of this moment, no additions on D of note for the Bengal Tigers of Cincy. Just b/c the Jints stood pat last year and won a Super Bowl doesn't mean your D will learn to tackle. Chad Johnson must be so happy.
